There are three main sections: Publications Collection Archives Collection Pictorial Collections (published material) (unpublished material) Includes: Includes: Includes: Books Letters Photographs Journals, magazines & Manuscripts Paintings newspapers Personal Journals Prints Audiovisual material Company & Drawings & Sketches Microform Organisational Records Maps Private Papers Photographs Find information in these collections by using: Library Search Ketu Hākena Catalogue Hākena Catalogue Indexes and Databases Consult with Archives Hocken Snapshop Bibliographies Staff Consult with Pictorial Consult with Reference Collections Staff Staff 3

How do I find these resources? As we are a research collection most of our resources are housed in closed stacks and are not available for browsing. Staff at the Reference Desk will retrieve items you request from the stacks and bring them to you to use in our Reading Room. Staff can show you how to locate and order material through the catalogues and can advise on resources. Most of the commonly used genealogical sources available at the Hocken Collections can be found on microfiche or in the Ready Reference section of the main reference area on the ground floor. Please ask staff if you need help locating any of these. We hold numerous other sources both published and unpublished and you can search for material on our Online Public Access Catalogues: for books, theses, journals, magazines, newspapers, maps, and audiovisual material, use Library Search Ketu. The advanced search http://otago.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?mode=ad vanced&vid=dunedin gives you several search options, and you can refine your results to the Hocken Library on the left side of the screen. The Library Search Guide http://otago.libguides.com/librarysearch contains helpful tips and assistance for using Library Search Ketu; for pictures, photographs and archives and manuscripts, use Hākena http://hakena.otago.ac.nz The Hākena Search Help Guide http://otago.libguides.com/hakena contains helpful tips and assistance for using Hākena; some of the photographs from the Pictorial Collections are available for viewing online via Hocken Snapshop at http://hockensnapshop.ac.nz/. Some other photographs and artworks can be viewed at http://otago.ourheritage.ac.nz/. Searching for Publications Library Search Ketu allows you to search for books, journals, maps, audio visual material and other published materials held by the Library. You can search by author, title, subject or keyword. If you are not sure where to start, try searching: Ngā Ūpoko Tukutuku / Māori Subject Headings: The Hocken Collections, as part of the University of Otago Library, is beginning to use Ngā Ūpoko Tukutuku when cataloguing published materials. The number of items in the 4

catalogue that can be searched using these subject headings will grow over time. The subject headings can be browsed at: http://mshupoko.natlib.govt.nz/mshupoko/. Browse by Subject: A search for Māori in a browse search by subject on Library Search Ketu http://otago.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?fn=showbrow se&mode=browsesearch&dscnt=0&dstmp=1421026766147&vid=dunedin will bring up a list of subject headings. Some of the main headings are: Māori (New Zealand people) Government relations Māori (New Zealand people) History Māori (New Zealand people) Land tenure Māori (New Zealand people) Social life and customs You can also look for subject headings about a particular iwi or hapu eg. Ngai Tahu and History Tuhoe and Biography Finding items under a simple search may help you find other subject headings to search. For example a search for Tapu found records with subject headings including: Māori (New Zealand people) Religion Taboo New Zealand Sacred space New Zealand Simple Search: Allows you to search for specific words. This is useful for words in te reo Māori, if the subject headings are too wide or if you cannot find a subject heading which is appropriate. Searching for Archives Hākena is the Hocken pictures, photographs and archives and manuscripts catalogue, and there are a number of ways of searching. You can: use the Simple Search e.g. Māori Mythology search by iwi or hapu (in Advanced Search) search by a person s name (in Advanced Search) Ngā Ūpoko Tukutuku / Māori Subject Headings: Hocken Archives are using Ngā Ūpoko Tukutuku when arranging and describing new archives collections. The number of items on Hākena that can be searched using these subject headings will grow over time. 5

Staff can show you how to request items from the catalogue. Archives must be used in our Special Reading Room where we ask you to use pencils only.
