It's purpose is to deny individuals the opportunity to use the hardware as a means of attaching a ligature for the purpose of inflicting harm to themselves or others. Research indicates that removing or reducing easy access to lethal methods of self-harming is an effective way of preventing suicide. Throughout the UK, there are various initiatives to reduce this figure. In England, the target is a reduction of 20% by 2010; in Scotland the target is 20% by 2013. Importance of the Correct Installation The installation of any anti-ligature ironmongery product is notably more technical than the installation of standard door furniture. The purpose of installation is effectively as a potential 'life saving device', therefore such products require an increased attention to detail of manufacturers instructions and a thorough technical understanding of the required operation and design of the product in question. Often the specifics of installation are overlooked by contractors within both the tender and installation stages of procurement, and as a result of underestimating the attention to detail required, this often results in substandard installation.
