The original founders of NPS Shoes Ltd. The Northamptonshire Productive Society was founded in 1881 and was the longest serving workers co-operative in the U.K.
OUR HISTORY The county of Northamptonshire, England, has long been renowned for its boot and shoe making, the village of Wollaston is no exception. In 1881 eleven men banded together to form a worker s co-operative (a company owned and run by the people working in it), called the Northamptonshire Productive Society (NPS) Shoes. Their premises were based in a dove house located in Thrift Street, Wollaston, and NPS was locally referred to as The Duffers. Luck was with them from the outset as they managed to secure an order for army boots from the Government, an order which would sustain them for the first year. As industrialisation spread in England during the late nineteenth Century, demand in England and abroad for high quality boots steadily increased. Accordingly, NPS enjoyed rapid growth and by the turn of the previous century NPS had grown to 80 employees. Consequently, NPS moved to a larger purpose-built factory on South Street, which although modified and expanded, they occupy to this day. Times change and NPS moved into private family ownership in 2006 but has continued to maintain it s independence and high-quality standards which have secured NPS footwear a reputation with retailers and discerning customers as a premium product. NPS continue to remain true to their ideals, combining over 130 years of tradition, the latest technology and materials, in order to produce high quality footwear. To maintain this undisputed quality, our products will always be made in the UK from the start to finish. 10
SIZE GUIDE We have measured the internal foot-beds of our shoes and boots and created a size guide according to an average proportion/foot width. To use the chart, you will need to measure your foot accurately. You will need: a sheet of paper larger than your foot, ruler and pencil. Wearing socks, stand on your paper and make a mark at the end of your longest toe and at the back of your heel. Join up the marks with a straight line. Do this for both feet as usually one foot is bigger than the other. Measure the length of your longest foot and add approximately 7-8mm / 0.25" to give yourself some tolerance for your toes. Now find the closest (larger) dimension on the chart below. If your size falls exactly on the split between two sizes, we would suggest you purchase the larger size. If the footwear is slightly too large, most footwear retails, pharmacies and cobblers sell a removable insert that will bridge this sizing gap / fit issue for you. This is a size guide only and as a result we cannot accept responsibility for a 'wrong size'. G00DYEAR WELTED FOOTWEAR EXPLAINED Construction Method and it s Key Benefits There can be up to 60 components and 200 highly skilled processed required to make a pair of 'Goodyear welted' boots and shoes. This traditional method of manufacturing using stitching threads to attach the soles, welts and uppers together, which gives our footwear the following key advantages: comfort, strength, insulation, and flexibility. Critically the Goodyear welted construction method permits our footwear to easily be re-soled when required in order to extend the life of your footwear. Materials and Components All of the products in our footwear ranges contain quality key components which are sourced where possible in the UK and all other raw materials from the EU: Calf Leather upper, leather lining, leather insole, leather welt, leather sole and a leather heel (where applicable). Footwear Care and Repair The life of our footwear can be extended by the correct cleaning and care of the materials. After use you should remove any traces of dirt with a damp cloth or brush. When your footwear has been worn it will take time to dry out and release any moisture which has been stored during wear. Never force dry your footwear by placing them on or near to a heater, radiator, or hot pipes. Forced drying causes the leather to become brittle and crack, significantly reducing the life of your footwear and decreasing the likelihood it can be repaired or the sole replaced. In relation to our leather sole footwear, once your shoes have been removed we would recommend that they are laid on their sides so the leather sole is exposed to the air and allowed to dry. Once dry, a coat of polish or cream should be applied to the upper leather to both maintain the colour and protect the leather during wear. 12
