Today Sweethaven Village has been turned into one of the most visited family attractions on the island, with an amusement park to entertain the whole family. (par.1) The construction of the set started in June 1979. It took 165 workers and seven months to build the village, which consists of 19 real wooden buildings. The wooden materials were imported from Holland and Canada, since Malta doesn t have any forests. To put all the wood together and make it stand out, 8 tons of nails and 2000 gallons of paint were used in the construction. In addition, a 200 250 foot breakwater was built around Anchor Bay's mouth to protect the set from high seas during the shooting. The set was completed in seven months, and filming commenced on January 23, 1980. The film, based on the comic strips by E.C. Segar, is set around the fictional village of Sweethaven where the sailor Popeye, who is a good-guy with bulging forearms and a passion for canned spinach, arrives in an attempt to find his long lost father. (par. 2) Popeye Village is located at the beautiful Anchor Bay in the north-west corner of the Mediterranean island of Malta, two miles away from the village of Mellieħa. It has clear blue waters and a magnificent surrounding, so the free boat ride included in the day s package is a must. Popeye Village is not only fun during summer but also during the winter season with indoor playing areas. During the Christmas period, English Reading Comprehension Year 6 Page 4 of 10 February 2015
