Lesson 8 Why Anansi Has Thin Legs a story from the Akan people of West Africa 1 Anansi is a spider. He has a fat body and eight fat legs. Anansi loves to eat, but be does not like to cook. Anansi lives in a village. There are green trees, beautiful mountains, and a river. Anansi has many friends in his village. His friends are happy to share food with Anansi. First, Anansi visits rabbit. Rabbit is cooking greens and he says, Anansi, stay and eat. Anansi says, No, I cannot stay. But I have an idea! Anansi makes a web and he gives the end of the web to Rabbit. He says, Rabbit take this web. Then pull the web when the food is ready. I will come running. Rabbit says, Good idea. Bye Anansi. Next, Anansi visits monkey. Monkey is cooking beans and he says, Anansi, stay and eat. Anansi says, No, I cannot stay, but pull the web when the food is ready. I will come running.
Finally, Anansi visits hog. Hog is cooking sweet potatoes and he says, Anansi, stay and eat. Anansi says, No, I cannot stay, but pull the web when the food is ready. I will come running. Anansi walks to the river. He has a web on all of his eight legs, and he feels excited about the food. Anansi thinks his plan is a good idea. Suddenly, the food is ready, so all the friends pull the web. Anansi s legs stretch and stretch and he yells, Ahhhhhh. Then Anansi falls into the river.
Now, Anansi s legs are long and thin, and he is still hungry because he did not eat. Anansi walks home and he says, That was not a good idea. Maybe there is food at home.
