FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS When death takes place, what should I do? In most cases one call to St. Louis Cremation is all that is necessary. Our staff transports your loved one to our facility. Once the proper cremation authorization is completed, we will process the death certificate and then the cremation can take place. How can I ensure the integrity of the cremated remains of our loved ones? St. Louis Cremation uses a sophisticated identification procedure that stays with the person at all times. When all of the paper work is finalized the body is placed into an empty cremation chamber. What happens to the cremated remains after cremation? St. Louis Cremation will return the cremated remains as per the family s instructions. We provide a temporary container or the family may purchase a permanent urn. Can I Pre-Pay the cost of cremation? Absolutely. Those funds are placed in a fund required by the state of Missouri. At the time of death we may withdraw the funds set aside for your services. If you pre-pay the cost of cremation, that price is frozen forever and you will not have to pay anything extra if the prices ever go up. How are Social Security and Veterans benefits handled? St. Louis Cremation assists you in applying for death benefits, which are paid directly to you. Veterans may be eligible for cash benefits, cemetery space and a marker if certain requirements are met. What happens if death occurs out of state? You should call St. Louis Cremation and we can handle all of the arrangements. How long does this process take? Before we can proceed with cremation, the state of Missouri requires the original death certificate to be signed by the doctor and filed with vital records. We cannot accept a faxed signature. Once the death certificate is signed and filed we can schedule the cremation. Typically the cremated remains are available in about 3-5 business days. Do I have to be embalmed before I am cremated? No. The state of Missouri does not require a person to be embalmed before cremation as long as the body is kept in refrigeration. We have refrigeration units here so there is no extra cost to the family. Do I have to contract a traditional funeral home? St. Louis Cremation is licensed by the state of Missouri as a funeral home and crematory. Although we are the cremation specialists, we are also a traditional funeral home. www.stlouiscremation.com

MEDICAL SCHOOL DONATION How do I donate my body to medical science? In St. Louis there are two schools that accept bodies to be used for teaching and research. These schools are St. Louis University School of Medicine, and Washington University School of Medicine. A prospective whole body donor must contact one of these schools prior to his or her death and fill out a gift of body donation form. Once this has been accepted, you are officially enrolled in the body donation program. Will the medical school pick up my body and transport it to the medical school? No. It is the responsibility of the donor s family or friends to make arrangements for the transportation of the body from the place of death to the medical school. Will a medical school accept my body after I die if I have not filled out the necessary donation forms? Each school operates differently. Sometimes special arrangements can be made to accept the body of someone who has not signed up in its program. The school will usually consider each case and, based on many different factors, make a decision whether or not to accept the body. If they do not accept, please contact National Body Donor Program (314-241-6237), or talk to representative at St. Louis Cremation and they can help you with this process. What is done with my body when the medical school is finished with it? In most cases the body is cremated and the ashes are disposed of in a dignified manner. Check with each school to find out what it does with the ashes. Can my family make arrangements with someone other than a funeral home to transport my body to a medical school? YES, as long as the transportation is done in accordance with the rules and regulations of the State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors for the State of Missouri. What if I should die while traveling? ST. LOUIS CREMATION offers travel protection to any individuals who have a paid pre-need plan. While traveling in the continental United States and Canada, we can make necessary arrangements to have your body brought back to St. Louis in the event of your death. (Please be aware that St. Louis Cremation has to be the first call that is made in the event of a death. This plan excludes travel to Hawaii, Florida Keys, and Martha s Vinyard.) Travel protection plan for Medical School donation is $495.00. Can I make prearrangements and prepay for the service? YES. More families than ever are making arrangements in advance. Pre-planning allows you the opportunity to make wise decisions at a convenient time, and provides peace of mind for everyone involved. Pre-payment is recommended because it protects funds against price increases due to inflation and other factors. Can I register my wishes with you now, and defer payments until later? YES. To those who prefer to make their arrangements now but defer payment, you can become a member of St. Louis Cremation at no cost. As a member, we will record your wishes in our files, and you may pay for the arrangements at any time in the future. At the time our services are needed, you pay the current prices. It s easy to register: call us at 314-241-8844 You will receive a wallet I.D. card identifying you as a registered member. $495.00 The above piece includes transportation from the place of death to the medical school, generating the death certificate, having it signed by the doctor, filing it with the bureau of records, and filing a social security notice. Delivery to Brain Bank............................$250.00 Courier delivery of death certificate to private medical doctor..........................$75.00 Travel protection...................................$495.00 (Medical school donations only) There is an extra mileage charge of $2.00 per mile (round trip) for removal 25 miles or more from St. Louis Gateway Arch. The fee can be paid by Visa/Mastercard/AmEx or personal check. If you have other questions, the individual schools will be pleased to answer them.
