Zintra Acustic Textures Cutting and Installatin Instructins fr ½ panels CUTTING AND FABRICATING PANELS ON SITE Any f the panels can be cut r adjusted n site. This allws fr site adjustments r adaptatins t bstacles (such as fire alarm bxes r electrical bxes.) When cutting r drilling, make sure t use sharpened tls t avid any verheating f the material. A utility knife with a new blade can als be used. The texture f the panels are similar t MDF. A panel may be cut with: Hand saw Use a fine tthed blade. Hld the blade at a lw angle. Cut slwly with regular and even strkes. Table saw r Circular saw Allw the panel t pass thrugh the saw with even pressure. D nt frce the panel at any time. Use a fine tthed blade with 80 teeth r mre. Carbide tipped blades are recmmended fr extensive cutting r if many panels are t be cut cnsecutively. Jig saw If adjustable, use a slwer speed and steady mvement. Select a fine tthed blade suited fr finish wds and plastics and use a template fr cututs. Be aware t nt verheat an area with any blade. D nt attempt t use ruters r spiral cutters. Laser tls are als nt recmmended. Best results will be achieved by using nly very sharp tls and blades, ensuring clean cutting while nt verheating the material during the cut. Carefully clamp all panels t avid vibratin during cutting. Vibratin during cutting r fabricatin may result in panel damage. Prperly supprt the panel at all times. Carefully measure all walls t be cnfident that yu can transfer thse measurements nt the panels prir t cutting. Scribe t fit as necessary. Use a pencil t mark the panel. If yu must mark the face side, use blue tape befre marking it. Pencil marks will nt erase frm Zintra. Zintra panels can be drilled. Carbide tipped steel drills are recmmended t btain a high grade finish n the sides f every hle. Better results will be btained with slw t medium drill speeds. INSTALLATION Zintra panels are simple t install. The panels are mst cmmnly installed using ne f fur methds: Direct adhesin t the substrate. Using Z clips. Using stand ffs. Mechanical fasteners (screws and nails). If yu are unsure abut which methd has been specified fr yur prject, please cnfirm thse details with yur specificatin surce and direct yur questins t them. MDC may be able t assist yu with sme cmmn questins, but please realize that yur specific prject may be unique t yu. Suitable substrates are scuffed MDF, plywd, gyp bard, CMU r any unifrmly clean, suitably sund, stable, smth and/r previusly painted surface with a verified bnd f the catings and layers with a surface which has sme tth t allw adequate bnding. If yu have any dubts abut yur surface, then a site mck up is suggested. Applicatin t lse r unsecured plywd r MDF panels is nt recmmended. D nt rush the installatin. A prfessinal installer is recmmended s that prper care and attentin are paid t this. Installatin details fr thse fur methds: Direct Adhesin t the Substrate. Be certain that yur substrate will hld an adequate bnd t the recmmended adhesive. If in dubt abut a cating r a finish already in place, an adhesin mck up test is recmmended befre yu begin. Cut, scribe and pre fit all Zintra ½ panels as necessary. Once all f the panels have been prperly sized and trimmed, begin the applicatin f the adhesive t the BACK SIDE ONLY f each panel. Use ONLY Liquid Nails LN710 Panel and Mlding adhesive tubes. Place the cartridge tube int the caulking gun, cut the nzzle and puncture the inner seal. Trim nzzle t prduce a ¼ thick bead. First, apply a squiggly bead 1 in frm the edge f the panel alng all fur perimeter edges f the BACK face f the panel. See belw images fr reference. Then apply a zig zag pattern diagnally acrss the central sectin f the panel, within the already placed bead f adhesive. Apply the panel t the substrate within 20 minutes and mnitr yur adhesive t prevent it frm skinning ver. Set the panel gently int place. Smth the panel int place and then lift it ff the surface, hlding the panel separate fr ne minute. Then reset the panel t the substrate, this time applying adequate pressure t firmly set it. Mechanically supprt the panel(s) if yu deem it necessary until the adhesive is cmpletely set. NEVER use slvent based cntact adhesives r unauthrized adhesives. Using Z Clips (als called 2 part French cleats r Z bars ) Z clips are tw parts fr each clip, ne munted t the wall substrate and the ther munted t the back f the material. If using a Z clip system, be sure t allw a gap at the ceiling line which is sufficient in dimensin t allw the clip, which will be installed n the panel, t be lifted up ver the wall munted prtin f that clip and then drpped in t be seated prperly. This is cmmnly a 1 r s allwance. Depending upn the size f yur panel, yu will have 2, 3 r 4 f the Z clips t munt the panel securely. The gal is t munt each panel level and plumb. Begin by munting yur first half f each Z clip t the back f the first panel. Orient the clip t be facing dwnward (pen gap is dwn). Install the uppermst clip n clser than 1 t the hrizntal tp edge f the panel. Clips shuld be psitined t be: Parallel t the hrizntal edge f the panel. Centered n the panel and n clser than 6 away frm each vertical side edge. Separate each clip t be psitined n clser than 2 belw the clip abve it. Attach the panel clip halves t the panel using pan head #8 sheet metal screws, ½ lng. Yu will need t drill hles fr these screws in the Z clip halves, but nt int the panel itself. D nt vertighten any screws. Psitin a screw anchr t be n less than every 12 alng the clip. With each half clip nw attached t the panels, yu can crdinate the placement f the ppsing half f each clip attached t the substrate. BE SURE YOUR PLACEMENTS ARE DESIGNED TO ALLOW FOR THE DROP IN HEIGHT ALLOWANCE NEEDED TO LIFT THE PANEL OVER THE BOTTOM CLIPS BEFORE SEATING EACH. Measure dwn frm the ceiling n the substrate and psitin the uppermst clip n a hrizntal line which is placed t allw the tw halves t be seated prperly nce the panel is installed. Verify that these clip psitins are level and prperly spaced t crdinate with the ppsing halves befre cmmitting. Install these clips using a suitable anchr fr yur substrate. Mst cmmnly, that will be 5/8 gyp bard. Select yur anchr knwing that the best chice fr the screw is a pan r truss head #8 f apprpriate length t securely embed int the wall studs. We d nt recmmend the use f fluted head drywall screws fr this. Yu will need t drill hles fr these screws in each f the Z clip halves. With the wall halves nw secured, yu can lift the panel t slip ver the wall Z clips and then drp int prperly seated psitin. Using Stand Offs The number f stand ffs will be determined by yur panel dimensins. Please refer t the fllwing diagram fr an verview f hw many that might be. Blcking is als recmmended with Stand-Offs as a hidden supprt t prevent caving f panels. Stand ff placement guide Stand ffs shuld be 3 frm the edge f panel 2 x 2 2 x 4 2 x 9 4 x 4 4 x 9 MDC 400 High Grve Blvd., Glendale Heights, IL 60139 tel 800 621 4006 fax 847 437 4017 mdcwall.cm
Begin by marking the panel back fr the placement f each hle fr each stand ff required. N hle shuld be clser than 3 away frm the perimeter edges f the panel. Using a tungsten carbide bit f the diameter apprpriate t match yur stand ff (nt supplied, s yu will need t determine these), use a pwer drill t create each hle as yu have marked. With all f the hles nw drilled, determine the precise placement f where the panel is t be installed. With ne persn hlding the panel level and plumb, a secnd persn will mark the substrate fr the precise placement f the hles. Secure each stand ff base t the substrate using an apprpriate anchr. (We recmmend that yu have arranged a backing supprt already in the wall r align a vertical clumn f anchrs t fall n a wall stud instead f hanging the full weight ff just the gyp bard wall panel. The installer r specifier will be making these chices.) Set the panel in place ver the stand ff bases and attach the stand ff head cap trims t secure the panel. Tighten nly by hand, d nt ver tighten. Mechanical Fasteners Yu may als secure the Zintra panel t the substrate using the same fastener placement guide as used fr the stand ffs, but use direct fastening (screw r nails) t secure the panel. If using screws, we suggest that yu use a pan r truss head and that yu pre drill yur hles (selecting a tungsten carbide drill bit f the apprpriate diameter t the screw yu have selected.) Remember t select an anchr which is apprpriate t yur substrate. Each standard Zintra panel is apprximately 18 lbs. Make sure t tighten all screws t be tight, but t nt be verly tight (d nt cmpress the Zintra unevenly.) Pwer nailing can be utilized if yu have adjusted the tip f the gun fr the density f the Zintra. If yu are unsure abut the system selected fr yur prject, please stp and verify the details. MDC may be able t assist yu with sme methds f cmmn attachment, but thers may be unique t yur prject.
