Appendix C Caccavo/Stallone Famiglia Lineage

Caccavo/Stallone Family Vincenzo Caccavo (1875-1940) Vincenzo Caccavo was born in the commune of Giovinazzo, Puglia, Italy on June 22, 1875 and he died in Mount Vernon, New York in 1940. His parents were Joseph Caccavo and Corsigna DiPalma. He married Grazia ( Grace ) Stallone in 1896. She was born in the province of Bari, Puglia, Italy in 1887 and died in Mount Vernon, New York on in 1954. Vincenzo s nickname was Jimmy or James. Vincenzo was considered a bird of passage traveling between Italy and the United States between 1902 and 1928 for work and family before finally settling in the United States in 1928. Vincenzo s occupation was as a general laborer and Grazia was a housewife. Vincenzo and Grazia had five children: 1. M-Joseph ( Joe ) H. Caccaro (11/6/1898-10/8/1993), born in Giovinazzo, Italy 2. M-Nicola ( Nick ) Caccavo (1/21/1913-?), born in Franklin, PA 3. F-Angiolina ( Angelina ) Caccavo (3/26/1914-1930s), born in Franklin, PA 4. F-Raffaeluccia ( Fannie ) Caccavo (6/16/1916-?), born in Franklin, PA 5. F-Francesca ( Francis ) Caccavo (3/8/1917-1970), born in Franklin, PA The surname Caccavo is used mostly in Italy and the United States. In Italy the surname is predominantly used in southern Italy in the region of Puglia. Caccavo probably derives its name from the cauldron used by monks to feed the poor. Vincenzo s and Grazia s immigration and census records tell us the following about their lives: In 1902, Vincenzo first entered the United States by way of the Canadian border crossing at Niagara Falls, New York. After earning some money, he returned to Giovinazzo, Italy. In 1905, Vincenzo again traveled to the United States for employment crossing at Niagara Falls. At the time, he listed his occupation as a laborer and that had $4.00 in his pocket. In 1911, Vincenzo son, Joseph Caccavo (pictured left) immigrated to the United States settling in Oil City, Pennsylvania with his father. On September 11, 1911, Vincenzo became a naturalized citizen in Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania (Franklin is the county seat of Venango County). In 1912, Vincenzo was identified as living in Oil City, Venango County, Pennsylvania (eight miles from the City of Franklin). He was listed in the local directory as living at 516 Pacific. Also living with him was his son, Joseph Caccavo and his mother, Corsigna Caccavo. By Giles Michael Patarino 07-2016 Appendix C, Caccavo Family, Page 200

In 1913, Grazia immigrated to the United States to join Vincenzo in Oil City. By 1914, Grazia was identified in the Oil City directory as the only person living with Jimmy Caccavo. Between 1913 and 1917, Vincenzo and Grazia had four more children that were born in Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania. Because Grazia terribly missed her family in Italy, the entire family, except for Joseph, migrated back to Giovinazzo about 1920. Joseph remained in Oil City and was married in 1923 to Anna Fonzo. In 1928, Vincenzo finally laid down the law telling Grazia that he could not make a good enough living in Italy to support his family and so the entire Caccavo family traveled back to the United States. They traveled on the ship named SS Conte Grande (their name is misspelled on the passenger list as Coccaro ). Their destination address was listed as 17 th Avenue in Mount Vernon, New York. The 1930 U.S. Census identified Vincenzo and his family as living at 64 West 4 th Street, Mount Vernon. They rented the home for $42 per month. Vincenzo was listed as an unemployed general laborer. Angiolina was working as a machine operator in a dress factory. Angiolina died soon after of tuberculosis. Francis Caccavo 14 years old in 1931 Francis Caccavo in Mount Vernon, New York By Giles Michael Patarino 07-2016 Appendix C, Caccavo Family, Page 201

The 1930 U.S. Census identified Vincenzo s son, Joseph Caccavo (1998-1993) as living in Franklin, Pennsylvania. He was married to Anna Fonzo (1905-1993; she was a first generation Italian-American born in Ohio) and they had four children: M-Vincent J. Caccavo (1925-?), M- Carmen Caccavo (1927-?), F-Grace Caccavo (1929-?) and M-Joseph H. Caccavo Jr. (1934-1939). Joseph was employed as a laborer/roll-hand at Franklin Steel Works. Joseph Caccavo (left) in 1936; Joseph and Anna Caccavo s tombstone in Franklin, Pennsylvania (above) The 1940 U.S. Census (conducted on April 10, 1940, a few months before Vincenzo died) identified the family as renting a home at 1411 East 12 th Street in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Midwood. Vincenzo was 65 years old and working as a laborer for $390 per month. Fannie, who was living with her parents, was working as a dress operator for $384 per month. At the time of Vincenzo s death, Francis was pregnant with her first child (Fannie Rae Bavaro) after marrying Domenico Bavaro in 1939. Appendix C End Notes Stallone Family The Stallone surname in Italy is predominately found in the regions of Puglia and Sicily. In Puglia, predominately in the province of Bari where the surname is found mostly in the communes of Giovinazzo and Bari (www.cognomix.it/mappe-dei-cognomiitaliani/stallone). As I was growing up, I was told by my mother that our family was connected to the famous movie actor Sylvester Stallone (1946-L) (born Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone in Washington D.C.). The story told to me was that Sylvester s great-grandfather was related to my greatgrandmother, Grazia ( Grace ) Stallone (1879-1954) who was born in Bari, Italy and immigrated to the U.S. in 1913 and 1928. Is there really a connection? Sylvester Stallone s father is Francesco ( Fred ) Stallone (1919-2011) who was born in Gioia del Colle, Bari, Italy. Francesco s father was Silvestro Stallone (1883-1963) who was born in Gioia del Colle and immigrated to the United States in 1930. Silvestro s brother, whose name was Guadenzio Stallone (1884-1974), also immigrated to the United States in 1914. Could Silvestro and Guadenzio Stallone be cousins of Grazia Stallone? More research will be needed to allow us to claim any relation to the famous Sylvester Stallone. It s also interesting that the parents of Silvestro Stallone (1883-1963) were Domenico Stallone (b. 1857) and Maria Giuditta Patarino (b. 1861) who were married in Gioia del Colle, Bari, Italy in 1882. Maria s parents were Gaudenzio Patarino and Maria Masi. Could Gaudenzio be the father of Filippo Patarino (b. 1870) who immigrated to the U.S. in 1906 from Gioia del Colle, Bari, Italy (See Chapter 6 Other Patarino Families who Migrated to the U.S.)? More research is needed. By Giles Michael Patarino 07-2016 Appendix C, Caccavo Family, Page 204
