ROOTS ALON LANGOTSKY NEW WORK - OLD PIECES CHISTA

ROOTS Old Work, New Pieces Alon Langotsky Tapping into his personal past, his extensive travels, as well as his experiences in photography, furniture design and tribal art, Langotsky has embarked on a series of new and diverse works: from single pieces, primarily mixed media collages on paper, to grid-like groupings made of acrylic paint and salt encrusted panels, and finally to installations that incorporate the walls and various architectural elements of the space in flamboyant abstract compositions. The result is an exhibition ambitious in scale and an exciting and moving artistic journey. Gifted at employing and unifying incongruous elements, Langotsky has placed, in conjunction with his works and in relation to the various spaces, ancient Chinese and Indonesian roots that he has treated, reformed, at times painted on or casted in bronze. Displayed on pedestals designed by the artist, or simply placed on the floor inviting an all around appreciation of their elaborate forms, these roots create dynamic relationships within the environment and with the surrounding pieces. With a wealth of textures and varying degrees of visual density, the pieces large scale and Langotskys ambitious use of materials and themes evoke a broad and rich viewing experience. Two strains of work are woven together through this exhibition. One has salt as its primary medium, referring to rock and stone formation myths, particularly evoking the biblical story of Lot s wife. The other, preoccupied with roots, refers to myths relating to human beings changed into trees. In both instances, biographic allusions operate within a vast range of symbolic, historical and cultural references. By coupling these metaphorically rich materials and objects, Langotsky conflates different and dynamic associations and tensions. Mirroring his interests, he manages to connect to the deeper subconscious aspects of his materials and objects, touching on their compelling iconographies and visual qualities, reaching past their literal meaning, and transforming them into evocative and moving artistic experiences. Langotsky s artistic activities are not separate from his other endeavors, nor placed in any ivory tower. Holistic by temperament, he activates the physical properties of his materials and objects with a broad sense of their social context allowing them to operate outside of and within the myriad definitions of art, design, and collecting.
