The integrated focus on scientific and artistic methods aims to develop competencies in current scientific debates, critical judgement and writing in the fields of intercultural collaboration. Team building - Organizing common undertakings and experiences - Developing goals and objectives for each student and for the group - Taking over responsibilities - Working with plans, milestones, and group events Intercultural Cooperation - Students present their different cultural backgrounds, their individual strengths and weaknesses using different media. - Developing case studies on intercultural aspects - Analysis, construction and presentation of typical intercultural clashes by role-playing, performances or professional techniques Advanced topics of project management - Project life-cycle from project initiation to closure

They are able to describe and critically evaluate selected literature on leading edge research in interactive media applications and to bring forward new ideas to promote the state-ofthe-art in digital media applications. They can account for that through scientific research and/or prototype construction and they are able to appropriately present their work and their ideas to an expert audience in speech, writing, and images. They learn how to conceptualize and develop complex applications for digital media or intermedia scenarios. For instance, they design cross-media installations employing interactions between humans, computers, and space, or they design novel human-computer interfaces. They should know important methods of systematic inter-relations of digital and analogue media in the context of media design. The main aim is to explore digital environments. Students can choose from selected topics in digital media design. On top of that, the module prepares and accompanies the master project. - Analyzing forms of representation, communication, and interaction - Developing and designing media-specific representations and their relation - Designing multimedia scenarios - Designing innovative human computer interfaces with new technologies (mobile, ubiquitous, wearable etc.)

Modulplan Master (2006) - Seite 8 Module number M - 104 Advanced Topics in Media Informatics Required/Option Master of Science: Required Master of Arts: Required Module Responsibilities Prof. Dr. Andreas Breiter Prof. Dr. Ulrike Erb Prof. Tim Edler Prof. Dr. Barbara Grüter Students select two courses out of the following application areas: - E-Learning - E-Services - Digital Media in Playing - Digital Media in Arts and Culture or, alternatively, - Advanced topics in applied research in informatics for digital media 2 semester 1 st and 2 nd semester V+PR or SU+PR 2 * 6 credits = 2 * 180 h Presence: 2 * 60 h Course related study work 2 * 120 h None The students are acquainted with main models and theories in different fields of digital media application (e-learning, e-services, playing, arts and culture) and are able to apply these models and theories to problems from current practice. They learn to understand differences in application contexts and learn to use research methods from different disciplines (economics, psychology, education, administrative science, cultural studies). They learn to develop their own research questions and to work in on a research thesis. Alternatively, they can focus on a special topic in applied research where they intensify their knowledge on digital media technologies, such as ubiquitous or wearable computing, mobile technologies or computer graphics. They are aware of its state of the art as well as the current trends and issues. They are able to promote the applications and/or the research in this field by their own work and ideas. They can account for that through scientific research and/or prototypes and appropriately present their work and their ideas to a scientific and/or technical audience in speech, writing, and other media. Students are expected to submit a contribution to an international conference. They do not only apply existing knowledge in science, the arts and artistic design, but also develop new knowledge: novel concepts, solutions, and methods. Working on a complex problem with importance to society, science, and arts or artistic design, the students concern themselves with: - - Organization of both individual work and team work - - Analysis of the problem - - Definition of objectives - - Research of the state of the art - - Theoretical reasoning - - Design of a solution - - Implementation - - Examination of the results - - Preparation of intermediate and final results for publication or other forms of public display, exhibitions etc. M.Sc. students are required to focus on media informatics in their work; M.A. students on media design. project work, project report, and colloquium Depending on project topic; to be determined in consultation with advisor

To this end, they employ methods of science as well as of the arts and artistic design. They work on their own initiative, set up schedules, and meet deadlines. Master thesis: - Subject matter related to the selected topic, typically corresponding to the respective master s project - Scientific research or development of artistic methods in the context of a complex problem in the field of digital media - Application of scientific results and methods as well methods of the arts and artistic design - Presenting work in science or the arts or artistic design in speech, writing, and digital media - Participating in research or artistic discourse M.Sc. students are required to focus on media informatics in their work; M.A. students on media design.
