I NTRODUCTION The Single Frequency Network transmission mode (SFN) which is possible with DVB-T/H, requires that all transmitters in the network are accurately synchronised. The synchronisation must include frequency as well as timing. That is, the transmitters must transmit the same bit at the same time on the same frequency. To facilitate synchronisation of the transmitter timing the TS 101191 standard specifies that timing and transmission mode information (Mega-frame Initialisation Packet) be inserted into the MPEG-2 transport stream prior to distribution of the stream to the DVB-T(H) transmitter sites. APPLICATION The MIP INSERTER PT5879 is a purpose built device for inserting MIP information into a MPEG-2 transport stream in accordance with the TS 101 191 standard. The PT5879 is therefore a very central building block in the implementation of a SFN network for DVB-T/H transmission. The transmission mode information inserted into the transport stream by the PT5879 MIP Inserter can also be used to control the transmitter sites in Multi Frequency Networks (MFN) thereby making the PT5879 MIP Inserter an ideal device for controlling the transmitter sites in both SFN- and MFN- networks (mode control by MIP in MFN mode requires that the modulator supports this function). The MIP INSERTER must be installed at the head-end of the network at a point before the transport stream is distributed to the individual transmitter sites. For SFN operation please observe the following system requirements: The correct function at systems level requires that a fully transparent medium is used for transferring the SFN adapted transport stream from the PT5879 MIP Inserter to the input of the SFN compliant DVB-T/H modulators (change of rate by inserting/removing stuffing bytes and/or changing the order of the bytes is not allowed). In accordance with the SFN standard the timing information embedded in the MIP is referenced to external 10MHz and 1PPS (1 pulse per second) clock references. At the transmitter site it is necessary to use a similar set of clock signals that are synchronous with the signals at the head-end in order to decode the timing information in the MIP. These clock signals are typically obtained from special DVB-T adapted GPS references. KEY FEATURES Inserts timing and mode information into MPEG- 2 transport stream in accordance with TS 101 191 Automatic adaptation of the bit-rate to the selected transmission mode Switchable TS priority flag for hierarchical operation Transfer of optional MIP (time offset, frequency offset, power level and private ) Input in ASI format (optional SPI LVDS format) Two ASI outputs Remote control Carousel via Ethernet (option) Hierarchical support (option) DVB-H support (option)
BASIC VERSION The PT5879 is available in four versions that only differ with regards to the transmission system bandwidth. PT5879/10 for 8 MHz DVB-T PT5879/11 for 7 MHz DVB-T PT5879/12 for 6 MHz DVB-T PT5879/13 for 5 MHz DVB-T The PT5879 supports input of the MPEG-2 transport stream in ASI format. The SFN Adapted MPEG-2 transport stream is delivered in ASI format (two ASI outputs are available as standard). The input of the PT5879 features automatic transport stream rate adaptation. The rate adaptation ensures that the unit in principle will accept any effective rate on the input up to but not exceeding the nominal rate for the selected set of transmission parameters. The nominal rate for SFN mode equals the nominal rate for MFN minus a slight overhead incurred from the need to including the MIP. The PT5879 features BNC inputs for the 10 MHz and 1 PPS external clock references. The user can make all settings related to system timing and transmission parameters via the front panel controls and via the RS232 interface (SCPI command protocol). Optional MIP like transmitter timing offset, frequency setting and power level for individual transmitters can conveniently be programmed via the RS232 interface (SCPI command protocol). The status of the instrument can be monitored via the front panel LCD and via the RS232 remote interface (SCPI command protocol). In addition it is possible to program the conditions under which two independent floating relays are to switch to the alarm state. OPTIONAL FEATURES The following optional features are available: The WebLink and SNMP Client option PT8727 allows remote control of the PT5879 via Ethernet (TCP/IP). The weblink system is based on a Web server mounted inside the PT5879. The Web pages stored on the Web server are designed as a complete graphical user interface (GUI) for testing the status and setting the parameters of the MIP Inserter. The WebLink concept is popular because remote control with this system only requires a standard PC with a network interface card (NIC) and a Web browser (Microsoft Explorer 5.0). The SNMP client allows remote control of the PT5879 in accordance with the SNMP protocol (Get, Set and SNMP traps). This remote control option is intended for systems solutions where it is desired to integrate the control of a range of (SNMP compliant) equipment in a common management system, the SNMP manager. The management system must be adapted/designed to the specific systems requirements and it is therefore not included with the supplied SNMP client option. The PT8727 option also includes a MIP Carousel for continued transmission of addressable MIP. PT8728 Multi Bandwidth: On-the-fly selection of system bandwidth (8, 7, 6, 5 MHz). Requires option PT8727. PT8733 Hierarchical support (also non-hierarchical mode). The rate is automatically adapted to the chosen TS priority (HP/LP) when hierchical mode is selected. PT8736 DVB-H support. This option extends the MIP TPS to include DVB-H specific parameters: Interleaver-depth, Time slicing status and MPE-FEC status.
