To check out and download books to your Kindle you will need to have: Your Ella Johnson Library card An Amazon account Your Kindle device Your Kindle USB cord (if your Kindle is not WiFi capable) Access to a computer (if you have any Kindle besides the Kindle Fire) Need Help? Come in to the library or call us at (847) 683-4490 for assistance! 1. Access the Overdrive Omni Website: If you have a Kindle Fire you have two options of borrowing ebooks: through the web option on your Fire or through downloading the OverDrive App. For instructions on how to download the app to your device, see our Tablet Help Guide. If you don t want to download the app, keep reading for how to access the OverDrive Omni website right through the browser on your Kindle Fire Tablet (make sure you are connected to a WiFi network first! If you are in the library you can connect to our Public wireless, EJL-Public ). If you have any other Kindle you will need to access the OverDrive website through a computer, even if your Kindle is WiFi capable. You can access Overdrive Omni from the OverDrive button on the right side of the library home page (www.ellajohnsonlibrary.org). You can also access Overdrive directly through this link: http://www.omnilibraries.org/ 2. Sign in with your Library Card Information: From the Overdrive Omni homepage, click on Sign in. Choose Ella Johnson Memorial Public Library from the drop-down menu that appears, then type in your Ella Johnson card number and pin number (the last 4 digits of your library card number) when prompted (see below).

3. Search for a book you want: Click on the Advanced Search link to the right of the search box. The advanced search screen allows you to search for a lot of different options at the same time. Type in the search criteria of your choice in the boxes provided. In the Format search box, choose Kindle Book from the drop-down selections. You may also choose to click the check box next to Only show copies with title available this will bring up only those titles that are available for immediate checkout. When you have entered all of your criteria, click on the Search button.

4. Select the book you would like to read: Choose the title you would like to read by clicking on the cover in the search results. If the item is available, you can click the green borrow button to get the book.

5. Go to your Bookshelf Once you have clicked on Borrow the page will refresh and you will taken to your bookshelf. You will see your book with download and return options next to it. 6. Get the book for your Kindle You will see the book on your bookshelf. To get the book on your Kindle, click the green Download (select one format) button. From the options that come up, click the box next to Kindle Book and then click confirm & download.

7. Check out through Amazon: A new window will open for the Amazon.com website with a link that says Get Library Book. Click on this link. The Amazon login screen will appear. Login to your Amazon account using your Amazon username and password. Once you are logged in to Amazon, select the Kindle device that you will be sending the ebook to from the drop-down list provided, then click Continue. Amazon will confirm your checkout.

8. Sync Your Device: In order to get your book you need to synch your device, either through connecting to a WiFi network or through connecting to a computer with a USB cord. If you have a Kindle with WiFi or have a Kindle Fire you can get your book now. For a Kindle Fire: Since you are using the browser on your Fire you can go back to your home screen by touching the Home icon and go to your Books option to find your new ebook. For a Kindle with WiFi: Connect to a wireless network by going to your settings and selecting an available WiFi network (If you are in the library you can connect to our Public wireless, EJL-Public ). Once your Kindle is connected to WiFi it will synch and the ebook will appear in your books. *Follow this next step only if you have a Kindle that does not have WiFi access* Plug the small end of the USB cord into your Kindle, and plug the larger end of the cord into the USB slot located on the front or back of the computer. Once you have plugged the USB cord in both your Kindle and the computer, you will want to click the Download now button on the Amazon checkout confirmation screen. A pop-up box will appear, asking if you want to save or open the item click the Save button. A pop-up menu showing the available computer drives will appear. Look for the drive labeled Kindle (your device needs to be attached to the computer for this to show up) and click on it. The pop-up menu should show the contents of the Kindle drive with several folders. Click on the Documents folder, the click the Save button.

Once the file has finished downloading, you can disconnect your Kindle. Your ebook should appear in the list of titles on your Home screen. If not, check your archived items folder the title may appear there. 9. Returning Items: Your items will automatically be returned for you (no late fees!) after the checkout period is over. However, if you would like to return an ebook to make room for another one, you can do that through your Amazon Account. Log in to your Amazon Account. Click on the Manage Your Kindle option under your Account information. Your Kindle Library will display. Click on Actions next to the item you want to return and then click return this book.

10. Renewing Items: Three days before your item will expire, you can renew it by logging into the OMNI Overdrive website, clicking on Account at the top to view the item(s) you have checked out, and clicking the renew option (see below). If there are no holds on your item you will be taken to another screen to click a green Renew button. If there are holds on the item you will see the following message:

If you click on the text you will be taken to a screen to fill out an email address so OMNI Overdrive can put you back on the hold list for the item and notify you when it is your turn.
