Reminder: aim and characteristics of the econtentplus programme Digital Libraries econtentplus 2008 Federico Milani Overall aim to make digital content in Europe more accessible, usable and exploitable, facilitating the creation and diffusion of information, in areas of public interest, at Community level. Enabling role Help content stakeholders (providers and users) realise the full potential of digital content by creating better conditions for accessing, using and exploiting digital material... based on which it will be possible to build added-value products and services across Europe ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 2 1

ecp 2008 call What is funded ecp 2008 - Target Areas Projects that: aim at improving the usability and quality of existing digital content in specific contexts of use in order to create the conditions for the emergence of quality trans-european content based services. use provenstate-of-the-art technical solutions, are geared towards innovation in organisation and in deployment (as opposed to purely technological innovation). Geographic Information Educational Content Digital Libraries ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 3 ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 4 2

Digital Libraries ecp 2008 call Target area Digital Libraries Objectives Make Europe s cultural and scientific heritage accessible to all. Contribute to the European Digital Library i2010: digital libraries Maximise impact of European research results scientific information in the digital age: access, dissemination, preservation ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 5 ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 6 3

The European Digital Library what is it? Contribute to the European Digital Library a common multilingual access point to Europe's distributed digital cultural heritage, hospitable to all types of cultural material (texts, audiovisual, museum objects, archival records etc.) and targeted at delivering rapidly a critical mass of resources to the users. www.europeandigitallibrary.eu/edlnet ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 8 4

The European Digital Library How to contribute? ecp 2008 call 5.1 Best Practice Network Increasing the quantity of digital cultural content Improving use and services Operational solutions for the European Digital Library Increasing the quantity of digital cultural content accessible through the European Digital Library Adapting data collections to identified standards Increase collection searchability Definition and take up of common standards and practices Content accessible through EDL ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 9 ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 10 5

5.2 Best Practice Network Improving use and services ecp 2008 call 5.3 Targeted projects Increasing the quantity of digital cultural content available Improving data retrieval Retrieval of different data types from different data collections Definition of services user interface of EDL New services to the EDL user Bring together selected complementary content on specific themes from different countries in the European Digital Library, through the targeted digitisation of material held by cultural institutions (libraries, museums and archives). History of differential equation Riccati s correspondence with Leibniz Increase collections searchability Metadata? Ontologies? Web 2.0 services? Semantic web technologies? Landscapes in Western painting: Giorgione first example ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 11 ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 12 6

5.5 A Thematic Network operational solutions for EDL Develop and put in place operational solutions for the European Digital Library. Raise awareness among stakeholders about the European Digital Library. Bring together all the relevant stakeholders and expertise necessary to formulate solutions, achieve consensus and implement decisions for the European Digital Library on operational issues. Maximise impact of research results ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 13 7

Maximise impact of research results why? ecp 2008 call 5.4 Targeted projects Maximise impact of research results All research builds on earlier work. Wider access leads to more innovation and avoids overlap in research efforts. ~2% of Europe's GDP (estimated at 11 trillion EUR in 2007) is devoted to research. EU invests 50 billion EUR in FP7. Experiment with open access to digital libraries of scientific/scholarly content to spread European research results. ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 15 ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 16 8

Digital Libraries econtentplus 2008 Concluding Remarks Some remarks The consortium must have sufficient digital content Links with the European Digital Library must be clear: www.europeandigitallibrary.eu/edlnet Use existing technologies adapting them to specific fields. Especially for Best Practice Networks Mobilise major stakeholders Each BPN should be able to make the difference in the area it targets ecp2008 - Digital Libraries - Objectives 18 9
