ABOUT THE COUNCIL OF KOREAN AMERICANS Dear CKA Supporter: On October 20-21, 2017, the Council of Korean Americans (CKA) will convene our third annual National Summit & Gala at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC. The CKA National Summit & Gala began in 2015 as an opportunity for Korean Americans to gather in our nation s capital to reflect on key issues and celebrate our contributions to the U.S. It is a crucial opportunity to hear from elected officials and connect with business and community leaders to plan and mobilize for action on matters that affect us all. In October, we will come together on behalf of all Korean Americans and assert our voice in action in our government, our society, and our communities. The third annual CKA National Summit & Gala will include a briefing on Capitol Hill focused on topics of interest to our community as well as convenings with leading Korean Americans from government, business, academia, and entertainment. Past speakers and honorees include United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon; World Bank President Jim Yong Kim; Judge Lucy Koh, the first female Korean American federal judge; Founder and CEO of Forever 21 Don Chang; renowned chemist and philanthropist Dr. Myung Ki Hong; Nightline anchor Juju Chang; and tech entrepreneur and co-owner of the San Francisco 49ers Gideon Yu. ABOUT THE COUNCIL OF KOREAN AMERICANS Expanding Our Reach CKA began with sixteen members in 2011 and today includes more than 135 Korean Americans. In the coming years, CKA plans to broaden its membership while building coalitions to expand our impact outside of our ethnic community. At the same time we grow our membership base, we will also look for synergies with groups that share our values and goals and work in an inclusive manner. Our partners include the Ploughshares Fund, American Jewish Committee, and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC). As Korean Americans, we understand what it means to rise above challenges and deal with adversity. We have made great strides in a short period of time, but we have more work to do to be seen and heard in American society. Last year, over 500 people attended our annual Gala & Awards Dinner. The theme was Fulfilling the Promise of America. We heard from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon about his vision for the Korean American community and the global society as well as the Ambassador-Designate to the Philippines Sung Kim about his career in diplomacy. The 2016 honorees were: Co-Owner of San Francisco 49ers and Chairman & CEO of Bowers & Wilkins Gideon Yu (CKA Trailblazer Award), US District Judge for Northern District of California Judge Lucy Koh (CKA Public Servant Award), and Chief of Staff of the City of Boston Daniel Koh (CKA Young Leader Award). 2016 GALA & AWARDS DINNER At CKA, we will continue to assert a strong, clear voice on issues that matter to all of us, partnering with leaders and organizations whenever possible so that our collective voice is heard in the mainstream and in the highest levels of our government.
