The Twelve C s of an Exceptional Leader As a former property manager, the habits I learned and processes to which I became addicted have enabled me to thrive. I am addicted to reading, I am addicted to pursuing knowledge and I am addicted to making difficult situations simple. Leadership can be difficult and I continue to strive for its simplicity. Throughout my years of leadership I have diligently tried to isolate the characteristics of good leaders. Many business books and ideological philosophies gave great insight to my quest, yet the real test was practicality and simple implementation. I created my C-list of the leadership characteristics to which I have become addicted. Each of these characteristics are derived and learned from my property management experiences and each is both practical and simple. An Exceptional Leader Has/Is: 1. Courage Take a position even when it is painful. 2. Charisma You must leverage your influence to get the job done. 3. Character It s not written in your DNA but is who you are at the core; it is your default position. Know yourself: Assess Evaluate and Correct. 4. Compassion The most profound human emotion, a desire to alleviate another s suffering. 5. Creativity Leaders live outside the box. Embrace change like it is your own child. 6. Competence Surround yourself with the best, and you will be the best. Read voraciously. 7. Common Sense The most powerful tool in your toolbox, don t leave it at home. 8. Collaborative Spirit Harness the power of human capital, it will always serve you well. 9. Communicator Communicate with everyone even your adversaries. 10. Conviction Commitment -Like a dog with a bone, you must know what you desire the most. 11. Capacity Internalize your problem until it turns into vision. 12. Credibility Integrity is expressed in what you do, not what you say.
