Handling and power supply are just as flexible as with the 1000 series transmitters. General information on working with hand-held transmitters can be found in the chapter on the 1000 series. The microphone on/off (mute) switch is a valuable feature during guided tours. When the guide pauses e.g. when changing from one room to the other he switches off the microphone, thus preventing unnecessary noise (this switch does not switch off the transmitter). Six switchable transmission frequencies facilitate working with different sets of receivers. Thus, simultaneous tours for example in different languages are also possible. The RF output power of 100 mw is adequate for reaching every listener, even in large factories. The SKM 1030 is insensitive to handling noise and the super-cardioid pattern of the microphone head suppresses sounds not emanating from the main pick-up direction. The transmitter is therefore also suitable for rough use in noisy industrial environments. An important note for handling: Let the wire antenna hang down loosely, as the efficiency of the antenna would otherwise decrease very markedly. The SKM 1030-7-BU version has a 2.5 mm mono jack audio input for feeding recordings, e.g. from portable MiniDisc, CD or cassette players, to the transmitter. Some examples: an artist s recorded comments on his or her exhibit in a museum. Or a greeting by a company owner to the participants in a tour of the factory fed to the transmitter by a personal stereo. For short tours, economical operation with the rechargeable BA 1032 accupack is recommended. The L 1032 will charge a transmitter with accupack inserted plus an additional spare accupack. The EZL 1030-20L charging and transport case (see next page) includes room for an L 1032 charger for the transmitter. 165

The RF receiver is integrated into the lower part of the stethoset headphone but it still weighs only 55 g and is very comfortable to wear. With its two operating controls the receiver is extremely easy to use: it features a rotary switch for selecting the frequency and an on/off/volume control. All operating controls are located on the (protected) bottom of the receiver. The maximum sound pressure level of 112 db leaves enough headroom even for rooms with high ambient noise levels. The construction of the headphone systems clearly attenuates ambient noise, achieving values of up to approx. 15dB. Unlike bodypack receivers with separate headphone, stethoset receivers have no troublesome cables. When collecting or handing them out there is no spaghetti of cables to disentangle. The receiver s ear-cushions can easily be removed and cleaned. Nevertheless they are on tightly so that they do not slip off by accident. Receiver versions with two or three receiving frequencies are specially suited for very popular visitor attractions. With them, several tours can be made simultaneously using different frequencies. If a tour is to be made in several languages at the same time you can use different frequencies for the individual languages. If you are using single-channel receivers with different frequencies, the KEN 1030 identification markers (supplied) help to differentiate between the individual receiving frequencies. The stethoset receiver is powered by a BA 90 rechargeable accupack with an operating time of approx. 8 hrs. Accupacks Identification marker can be charged in charging units for up to 10 or up to 20 accupacks. However, the better way is to charge them directly in the receiver via the L 1030-10 charging unit. The most practical solution for charging is the EZL 1030-20L charging and transport case. It recharges up to 20 accupacks in their receivers and can also contain a charger for the transmitter. A fully equipped EZL 1030-20 L case can also be used as a mini interpretation system. Interpreters can listen to a speaker via the loudspeaker system and then whisper a translation into the hand-held transmitter. Participants from abroad receive the translation via the stethoset receivers. This type of simultaneous translation may not offer the comfort of a professional interpretation system with cabins and desks, but it is extremely portable: one person can take it anywhere, even by plane or train. You can also use the tour-guide equipment as an economical portable talkback system, e.g. for lighting technicians. Replacing the BA 90 accupack 167
