A Lillie Mae s Crafts original design by Brenda Greenwalt Approximately 8 inches tall when completed. Read through all directions before beginning. For illustrations of the different ste ps and techniques as well as the stitches visit m y "Stitch 'n' Stuff" page on m y web site at http://www.lilliemaescrafts.com Note: The flann el, laces, and ribbons all need to be stained. You may opt to stain them before add ing th em to th e kitty or after ; the choice is yours. See the staining recipe and instru ction s given at the end of these pattern directions. Kitty #1 and #2: 1. Print & cut out both kitty patterns; trace pattern on double muslin, pin; do NOT cut out. Sew on traced lines; do NOT leave an opening. 2. Cut out about 1/4 inch away from sewn lines. 3. On center back, cut a small slit for turning. Clip curves and turn. 4. Stuff firmly and sew opening shut. 5. Paint with 2 coats of black acrylic paint being sure to let dry thoroughly after each coat. Sand lightly when completely dry. Kitty #3: 1. Print & cut out kitty and tail patterns. 2. Trace both patterns on double muslin, pin; do NOT cut out. Sew on traced lines leaving opening where indicated on patterns. 3. Cut out about 1/4 inch away from sewn lines; clip curves and turn. 4. Stuff firmly and sew openings shut. 5. Glue the end of the tail (the opened end that was sewn shut) to the bottom center of the back of the kitty. Looking at the picture, drape the tail around the front of the kitty and either sew it there or glue in place with hot glue. 6. Paint with 2 coats of black acrylic paint being sure to let dry thoroughly after each coat. Sand lightly when completely dry. Face: 1. Snout: Print & cutout snout pattern on card stock. Trace the snout pattern on double layer cream colored flannel; cut out. Stain with recipe and instructions given below at the end of these directions. Position snout on face and pin in place with straight pins. Sew on with matching embroidery thread. 2. Eyes: Looking at picture and pattern, sew black matte buttons on for eyes. 3. Nose: Print and cut out nose pattern on card stock. Looking at picture and pattern, position nose and pin in place with straight pins. Trace nose pattern. With 2 strands of black embroidery thread, lightly embroider the nose with satin stitch.

4. Whiskers #1: On one kitty - cut 3 pieces of jute each about 10 inches long; set aside for a moment. Cut about a 10 inch piece of cream colored embroidery thread; thread this onto doll needle. At bottom of nose, push the doll needle through from front to back leaving a tail to tie with; unthread doll needle. Thread the remaining embroidery thread left on front of snout and push doll needle once again from front to back leaving a little bit of a loop; do not tie this off yet. Gather your 3 pieces of jute and thread these through the loop. Tie the tails on back of head tightly. Whiskers #2: On another kitty - cut 8 pieces of stained 3-ply cord each 6 inches long. Attach in the same manner as above. Whiskers #3: The third kitty goes without whiskers. 5. Mouth: Looking at pattern and picture, take a mechanical pencil and draw a line down from the bottom point of the nose and then two small lines for the mouth. Thread a doll needle with a double strand of black embroidery thread, using a simple back stitch, embroider both of these. Finishing: 1. Looking at the pictures, wrap the different laces and ribbons around the neck of the kitties; either sew in place or glue in place. 2. Cut an 8 inch piece of jute, thread a small 1/2 inch rusty bell on the jute and tie around neck loosely, letting the bell hang down a bit. 3. Print off the tag on card stock. Cut a piece of jute about 10 inches long. Punch hole in tag and thread tag onto jute, thread on a small rusty bell, tie jute in back and cut. NOTE: If you don't have rusty bells, you may use the rusting recipe below. Staining Recipe: Combine ¼ cup instant coffee, 2 cups hot water, 1/4 cup Vanilla extract and ¼ teaspoon fragrance oil (Some of my preferred scents are cinnamon bun, sugar cookies, and vanilla) in a glass jar with lid. Shake for few minutes until thoroughly mixed. If the scent is not strong enough for your preference, add another 1/8 teaspoon of fragrance oil and continue this until the scent is to your liking. However, I would suggest only adding 1/8 teaspoon of fragrance oil each time because if you add too much and the scent is too strong for you, you will have to start over. Staining Instructio ns: Staining Before Stuffing: There are times when I feel I would have more control over how stained my project is if I stained it before it was stuffed. To do this I have an iron, for drying, which is only for craft projects. It is a little travel iron which is easily stored and perfect for both large and small items. Once stained, I lay it on a rag and iron the front, turn and iron the back, etc., and I will do this continuously until completely dry. If I want it grubbier, I will add a little of my stain to a small spritz bottle. Spray the project, sprinkle on cinnamon, and continue to iron again, as above, until dry. Staining After Stuffed: Line an old cookie sheet with old rags and lay what you re staining here. With a sponge brush or spray bottle thoroughly coat. Bake for 10 minutes at 200 degrees. Check often as this can catch on fire. If you have to bake

longer, only bake at 5 minute increments and always KEEP checking the oven. Store left over stain mixture in glass jar with lid for your next primitive project. Rusting Recipe: Combine 2 cups white vinegar, 1/4 cup peroxide and 2 tablespoons salt in a large plastic container; soak for 4 hours. Remove to paper towels, sprits with peroxide and spread salt on them. Let sit for another 2 hours. NOTE: This recipe calls for a large container as this recipe foams up pretty quickly. You're done with. I hope you enjoyed making them as much as I enjoyed designing them.
