RNQ N5 Expressive Portfolio Commentary Portfolio: My Favourite Things Section 1 - Expressive Portfolio - Process Producing relevant 2D/3D analytical drawings, studies and investigative research appropriate to the selected theme/stimulus Limited relevance Partially relevant Relevant All of the analytical drawings are highly relevant to the theme and have been developed into the subsequent work by the candidate. The candidate chooses not to include the scarf in some of the developments and final piece. Highly relevant Demonstrating a single line of development, showing visual continuity and the refinement of one idea and producing a final piece The candidate presents a focused line of development with the white boots as the key objects. They show a clear line of thought from the investigation to the final piece. There is good visual continuity and the development of one idea is evident. Section 2 - Expressive Portfolio - Skills Creatively using a selection of materials, techniques and/or technology in response to the theme/stimulus The candidate has experimented with a variety of materials in their portfolio. While some are more successful than others, a willingness to try a variety of techniques is evident. The experimentation allows the candidate to make a good decision about the best material for their final piece. In this artwork, paint is used with control and to good visual effect. Creatively using appropriate visual elements and expressive effects (eg composition, lighting, viewpoint, mood and atmosphere) in response to the theme/stimulus Colour is bold and expressive and tone is used well to show form. There is a confident use of composition throughout the development and in the final piece and an interest in zoomed in, cropped compositions is evident without the arrangements becoming repetitive. The candidate captures a lively mood in the final piece which reflects the theme well. Their handling of reflected colour within the white areas is particularly impressive. Section 3 - Expressive Portfolio - Evaluation Giving justified personal opinions on the decisions made when working through their expressive portfolio and evaluating the effectiveness of the visual qualities of their expressive portfolio with reference to their theme/stimulus Little or no justification Simple justification/ critical The candidate explains their creative decision making in a straightforward manner with some justification given. Bullet points are used to organise the. Some justification and critical Justification showing focused critical SQA www.understandingstandards.org.uk 2 of 8

RNQ N5 Art & Design Expressive Portfolio Commentary Portfolio: Shoreline Section 1 - Expressive Portfolio - Process Producing relevant 2D/3D analytical drawings, studies and investigative research appropriate to the selected theme/stimulus Limited relevance Partially relevant Relevant A clear title communicates the theme. Analytical drawings are highly relevant and form the basis of the portfolio. Highly relevant Demonstrating a single line of development, showing visual continuity and the refinement of one idea and producing a final piece Limited effectiveness Small sketches and more refined studies show clear development and provide continuity throughout the portfolio leading to a successful final piece. The process has been tackled highly effectively by the candidate. Section 2 - Expressive Portfolio - Skills Creatively using a selection of materials, techniques and/or technology in response to the theme/stimulus Limited effectiveness The candidate has used a wide range of materials and techniques in a highly effective manner. This can be seen from the initial investigation studies and the development, where the candidate shows a growing confidence in the use of media, leading to a successful and highly effective final painting. Creatively using appropriate visual elements and expressive effects (eg composition, lighting, viewpoint, mood and atmosphere) in response to the theme/stimulus Limited effectiveness Composition is highly effective as it has been fully explored from a number of angles and viewpoints. Subtle changes to the arrangement of objects have been made. Colour and tone have been used very successfully to communicate the theme. The candidate produces a fully resolved final piece, using the rope very effectively in the composition to lead the viewer s eye around the piece. SQA www.understandingstandards.org.uk 3 of 8

Section 3 - Expressive Portfolio - Evaluation Giving justified personal opinions on the decisions made when working through their expressive portfolio and evaluating the effectiveness of the visual qualities of their expressive portfolio with reference to their theme/stimulus Little or no justification Simple justification/ critical The candidate has produced a full and focused which details the stages they went through and the decisions they made in terms of use of materials, techniques and their effectiveness. RNQ N5 Art & Design Expressive Portfolio Commentary Portfolio: The Letter Section 1 - Expressive Portfolio - Process Producing relevant 2D/3D analytical drawings, studies and investigative research appropriate to the selected theme/stimulus Limited relevance Partially relevant Relevant A clear title communicates the theme. Highly relevant studies create a strong starting point for the portfolio. Highly relevant Demonstrating a single line of development, showing visual continuity and the refinement of one idea and producing a final piece Section 2 - Expressive Portfolio - Skills The candidate responds to the theme showing a single line of development incorporating the main imagery from the investigation studies in a highly effective way, leading to the final piece. Creatively using a selection of materials, techniques and/or technology in response to the theme/stimulus The candidate has tackled an ambitious theme and uses a range of materials and techniques in an effective manner throughout the portfolio. The smaller, more delicate, studies show a greater understanding of the materials. However, some of this understanding is less evident in the use of material in the final piece. The use of materials on the larger scale work has led to some of the refinement being lost. Creatively using appropriate visual elements and expressive effects (eg composition, lighting, viewpoint, mood and atmosphere) in response to the theme/stimulus There is an effective use of the visual elements in the portfolio, including subtle line and tonal studies. The use of colour has been considered. Mood and atmosphere has been captured effectively in the smaller studies, but is not so evident in the larger final piece. Composition has been considered effectively throughout the portfolio. SQA www.understandingstandards.org.uk 5 of 8

Section 3 - Expressive Portfolio Evaluation Giving justified personal opinions on the decisions made when working through their expressive portfolio and evaluating the effectiveness of the visual qualities of their expressive portfolio with reference to their theme/stimulus Little or no justification Simple justification/ critical Straightforward justification has been used to evaluate the process the candidate went through. Judgements are made on the success and weaknesses of their work in terms of the use of materials. Some justification and critical Justification showing focused critical SQA www.understandingstandards.org.uk 6 of 8

RNQ N5 Art & Design Expressive Portfolio Commentary Portfolio: Sealife Section 1 - Expressive Portfolio - Process Producing relevant 2D/3D analytical drawings, studies and investigative research appropriate to the selected theme/stimulus Limited relevance Partially relevant The candidate has produced relevant investigative studies relating to their theme of Sealife. Relevant Highly relevant Demonstrating a single line of development, showing visual continuity and the refinement of one idea and producing a final piece Two development studies have been produced leading to the final piece showing an effective process. Section 2 - Expressive Portfolio - Skills Creatively using a selection of materials, techniques and/or technology in response to the theme/stimulus The candidate has used the materials in a partially effective manner. There is some control in the handling of the chosen media. Creatively using appropriate visual elements and expressive effects (eg composition, lighting, viewpoint, mood and atmosphere) in response to the theme/stimulus There is a creative use of pattern, and texture has been use for decorative effect. However, ability in the use of composition is quite limited. The candidate has struggled with perspective. Ability to use tone is also quite basic. When these aspects are considered together, this element of the assessment is judged to be partially effective. SQA www.understandingstandards.org.uk 7 of 8

Section 3 - Expressive Portfolio Evaluation Giving justified personal opinions on the decisions made when working through their expressive portfolio and evaluating the effectiveness of the visual qualities of their expressive portfolio with reference to their theme/stimulus Little or no justification Simple justification/ critical Some justification and critical Justification showing focused critical The is mainly descriptive and is short in length. However, it does contain a couple of simple justifications which brings it into the partially effective range. SQA www.understandingstandards.org.uk 8 of 8
