The Turku Game Lab project supports the creation of new companies and employment in the game development business. It will build an innovation network for the gaming business, and conduct pilot projects together with regional companies, where game functions are applied to different uses. Turku Game Lab provides a concrete working environment where students from technical and artistic fields can develop games together. MODERNISING EDUCATION CoMoViWo aims at modernising education at higher education institutions, vocational institutions and enterprises: it seeks to define the skills needed in virtual and mobile work in a multicultural environment. As an international research project, it is carried out by six European collaborators: TUAS, Manchester Metropolitan University, Universitat Politècnica de València, the International Language Association (ICC) and Gdansk University of Technology. SPORTS AS A BUSINESS BOOSTER The Value from Sports project searches for methods for improving businesses from the world of sports. For example, productivity can be boosted through adapting new ways of conducting operations and inspiring people from athletics, or by fortifying selected, positive cultural values usually associated with the sports sector. By studying the specialties and possibilities of sports locally, the global competitiveness of Finnish companies can be significantly increased.

WELL-BEING MEETS TECHNOLOGY & ARTS FUNDING THE SOLVER Katariina Felixson Project Manager, TUAS The Healthy Ageing Supported by Internet and Community project (HASIC) supports elderly people by educating professionals and mentors, creating peer groups and an online platform, and supporting regional cooperation. As an international cooperation and development project having partners in Finland, Estonia, Hungary, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Norway HASIC receives funding from the European Union within the framework of the Second Health Programme. REGIONAL & INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION How to empower over 65-year-olds to adopt healthy lifestyles for better quality of life, at the same time cutting down the costs of medical services targeted for elderly people? POSITIVE EFFECT While the programme focuses on nutrition, exercise, moderate alcohol consumption, and social engagement, the outcome is very humane. The HASIC project has a very positive effect on the lives of elderly people, increasing well-being through, for example, weekly peer group meetings. In addition to six different European universities taking part in the project, local expertise is used to engage the elderly people, as well as social services and health care professionals. The cities of Turku and Kaarina, as well as the Turku City Mission association, are all vital parts of the project. EFFICIENT MIX OF EXPERTISE Healthy Ageing Supported by Internet and Community (HASIC) is one of several projects carried out under the multidisciplinary umbrella of health care and well-being services at TUAS. It empowers elderly people in Europe to adopt healthy lifestyles and improves the cost-effectiveness of communal services. As one of the most advanced and highly acknowledged regional higher education institutions, we can bring valuable expertise to various RDI cooperation projects. Combining the expertise in different fields of science such as well-being, health care, technology, and arts we are heading for a better functioning future in our community. HEALTH, WELL-BEING & ARTS RESEARCH GROUPS Active Adulthood Active Ageing Art Education and Art Pedagogy Arts, Health and Well-being Clinical Expertise in Health Care Contemporary Art Developing Social and Health Care Services and Processes Empowering Children and Young People Film and Media Functional Everyday Life and Accessible Environment Health Promotion Well-being and Leadership in Future Work SERIOUS GAMES FOR HEALTH CARE The Gamified Solutions in Healthcare project, funded by Tekes the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation, develops new services and effective activity solutions for elderly people through gamification. The project combines the expertise of many different disciplines and is linked to company-driven projects that develop serious games solutions for health care utilisation. The project has extensive international research exchange with Singapore and Japan. EASIER TREATMENT OF DIABETES In the emedic project, technological applications and monitoring tools have been tested and used to increase understanding of the needs and requirements of cost-saving and effective ehealth service models. The target has been to accelerate and ease the treatment of diabetes with the aid of telemedicine. The project has offered valuable knowledge for the future development of new working and care processes as well as practices in home care, primary care and secondary health care. MULTI-PROFESSIONAL TEAMWORK The MIMO project has developed multiprofessional teamwork models and applied art-based methods to be used in anticipatory youth work. Focusing on art-based and multi-professional working methods, and on the skills and knowledge needed in encountering and supporting young people, the project has trained future and present professionals working with young people in the cultural, social & health care, and youth work sectors.

ENVIRONMENT MEETS ENGINEERING INTERNATIONAL & INTEGRATIVE Funded by the European Union Seventh Framework Programme, the project uses an integrative approach to achieve its goals. With 18 different cooperative organisations in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Austria and Slovenia, PLEEC is truly an international project. INFORMATION TO BASE ACTIONS ON The project provides holistic knowledge about energy efficiency potentials in different cities. Its main target groups include city officials, NGO representatives, private sector actors and other actors planning and realising behavioral energy efficiency interventions in European cities. THE SOLVER Annika Kunnasvirta, Project Manager, TUAS By coordinating strategies and combining best practices, the Planning for Energy Efficient Cities project (PLEEC) will develop a general model for energy efficiency and sustainable city planning. KNOWLEDGE MEETS BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS How to achieve a sustainable, energyefficient, smart city, which consumes far less energy than today? Understanding the causes and patterns behind behavior is the key to successful energy efficiency programmes. One of PLEEC s objectives was to find Best Available Practice interventions from the partnering countries, aiming to address the behavioral aspects of energy efficiency. DEVELOPING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE The Planning for Energy Efficient Cities (PLEEC) project will create an action plan for an energy smart city an important tool contributing to the EU s climate and energy targets for 2020. Energy efficiency is crucial for mitigating climate change and minimising the use of non-renewable energy sources. The project also represents the vast possibilities TUAS has to offer for developing a sustainable future. With tens of different ongoing projects in the fields of environment, life sciences and business, TUAS can find functioning and operationimproving solutions from water management to civil engineering and networks for environmental experts, just to mention a few. Nevertheless, even a good product can be left unnoticed without skilled commercialisation. The MILLI project engages in increasing the appreciation of commercialisation and sales, and improves the sales skills especially among the youth. In the project, novel methods are tested on different educational levels from schools to universities. ENERGY FROM THE SUN The SOLARLEAP project removes barriers to solar power usage in Southwest Finland. The project organises supplemetary education, conducts pilot programmes, and thus improves the permission and building guidelines for more efficient utilising of solar power. During the two-year project, a series of new solar power systems will be installed in selected locations in the region. WORLDWIDE CONNECTIONS FinBraTech, a joint project between Finland and Brazil, promotes trade, training and development operations related to the maritime and technology industries particularly in the rapidly developing Pernambuco region. The project launches a development unit based on cooperation between several Finnish educational institutions, the Federal Universities of Pernambuco and Pará, and Finnish and Brazilian companies.
