Creativ 5c01 Smooth marble technique Glättemarmortechnik with filled plastic emulsion for expressive, harmonized color marble surfaces The figure shows a variant of the creative technique and should convey an impression of the surface effect to be achieved. There is no guarantee that the exact color will be reproduced. Substrate: smoothly filled and primed Prime coat: Super Latex ELF 3000 Decorating step: Latex Plastic ELF 904 mixed with Dolomit ELF 900, color shade 0095 white worked up with Dolomit ELF 900, color shades Scala 99.00.12 and 99.00.21 Date: 28.10.2013 Stone interpretation techniques Seite 1 von 6

Characteristics Elegant creative technique as an interpretation of marble surfaces. It was during the Baroque and Rococo eras that imitation marble painting techniques were developed to a high art. Today such high-quality painted surfaces are rarely produced. The smooth marble technique makes it possible to create efficiently crystalline, soft-toned, pastelcolored, marble-like surfaces. It is a modified stucco marble technique (imitation marble made of plaster, glue solution, and color pigments). A smooth substrate is coated with a plastic compound which is worked up with tinted emulsion paint weton-wet. In the final step the surfaces are smoothed diagonally. Due to the dynamic but uniform nature of the design, the whole surface has a very harmonized, uniformed appearance. Field of application For unique designs on interior walls. For visual emphasis on partial or small areas, such as wall mirrors, decorative band designs, skirting areas and pillars. In this creative technique, the surface is usually divided into several subareas. For a realistic representation, the textures of the individual subareas are created in different directions. On smaller areas it can also be applied over the entire surface without joints. Application Substrate condition The substrate must be solid, dry, clean, load-bearing, pore-free and smoothly filled using, for example, Mineral Hand-Applying Filler 1886. Prime the sanded, dust-free surfaces with Lacryl Deep Penetrating Primer ELF 595. Prime coat Apply a uniformly covering coating of Super Latex ELF 3000, white, without texture using Microfiber Paint Roller 1221. Lightly sand the surfaces after drying with fine sandpaper. Surface division and joint creation (optional) Division into partial areas For a particularly convincing implementation of the creative technique, the surfaces should generally be divided into individual partial areas with appropriate sizes. Realistic surface divisions, such as in rectangular block shapes, including joints, are particularly suitable. Before applying the actual creative technique, the partial areas must be treated as described in the steps below to achieve clearly pronounced joints. Step 1 Surface division Determine the surface division (the joint pattern) and carefully draw the outlines with a lead pencil. Mask the joints in accordance with the designed surface division with Tesaflex Fine Line Tape 3008, 3 mm. Step 2 Filling Apply Latex Plastic ELF 904 white (or tinted up to max. 5% with the prime coat material) in medium layer thickness over the entire surface using Paint Roller 1492 and distribute and smooth it uniformly. Smooth the wet layer with the Double Blade Spatula with Soft Grip 1289 or with the ETICS Surface Filler Knife 1341. Immediately remove the tape. After the coat has dried, sand the surfaces with fine sand paper (180 grit) by hand or use a Festool Rotex Ro 150 E-Plus 3247 with dust extraction until the surface is smooth and remove the dust. Mask the joints again with Tesaflex Fine Line Tape 3008, 3 mm. Then fill the areas again with Latex Plastic ELF 904 and immediately remove the tape. After drying, sand carefully and remove dust as described above. Step 3 Joint creation Apply a prime coat of Super Latex ELF 3000, white or tinted, with the Microfiber Paint Roller 1221 in a uniform, thin layer with as little texture as possible. After the prime coat has dried, cover the joints again with Tesaflex Fine Line Tape 3008, 3 mm. Before starting the decorating step, we recommend covering the partial area to be treated along the precise contours using Super Painter Masking Tape gold 1795 and, as required, Tesa Masking Tape Profi Plus 4306. Apply masking tape only just prior to each filling step and remove it again immediately afterwards. Stone interpretation techniques Seite 2 von 6

Decorating step The overall look can be comprised of individual partial areas (rectangular blocks) that partially differ with regard to their texture flow. If the surface is divided up as described above, the partial areas are processed individually. Rectangular blocks with the same appearance can be processed at the same time. Perform the decorating step with a basic mixture. To obtain it, mix Latex Plastic ELF 904 and Dolomit ELF 900 in a ratio of about 1:2. Use a Non-Padded Facade Paint Roller 1126 to apply a uniform thick coat of the basic mixture. Apply two or more accent colors wet-on-wet. Use a Pointed Brush 1380 to work in Dolomit ELF 900, tinted, modeling diagonally. Make a duplicate of the colored layer by gently pressing Masker Masking Paper 1609 onto it and then lightly press it down at another location to reproduce it. Repeat this procedure. Pretexture the paint layer unevenly while still wet with a Sudeten Filler Knife 1197 in the specified orientation of the color texture. Finally, lightly smooth the whole surface diagonally with a Stainless Steel Double Blade Filler Knife 1290. Remove masking tapes immediately after the decorating step is finished. Gently sand the dry surfaces with a Festool Rotex RO 150 E-Plus 3247 with dust extraction to eliminate coarse unevenness. Fine filling To fill the last pores, perform a fine filling with Dolomit ELF 900, base 30, semi-opaque, white or slightly tinted. In this context, note that if a slightly tinted Dolomit ELF 900, base 30, is used the glazing properties are significantly reduced. Moisten the substrate with a Viscose Sponge 1270, before continuing the thin-layer filling. Immediately afterwards, apply and smooth the material over the full surface without gaps in a thin layer using the Sudeten Filler Knife 1197 according to the spot filling technique moving from top to bottom. Once dry, gently sand the surfaces with a Festool Rotex RO 150 E-Plus 3247 with dust extraction to eliminate coarse unevenness and then remove any dust from the surfaces. Repeat the fine filling procedure several times, repeatedly sanding between each filling phase until all depressions and uneven areas are leveled out and the surface is flush. In case of concurrent joint creation, cover the joints with Tesaflex Contouring Tape 3008, 3 mm, before each filling step and then remove the tape immediately after filling. Overcoat Use a Short-Fiber Paint Roller 1217 to apply two uniform coats of Lacryl-PU Wood Sealer 264 gloss without texture and immediately rework the surface with a Round Foam Paint Roller 1135 using crisscrossing movements so that the surface texture is very fine and uniform. Before applying the second coat, gently sand the surfaces with fine sandpaper after they are dry. Before applying an overcoat, mask the joints (if joints have been implemented) with Tesaflex Fine Line Tape 3008, 3 mm, and then remove the tape immediately after filling. Creating joints Step 4 This is only required if the surface was previously divided up to create joints. Work Universal Hand Applying Filler 1882, slightly tinted with Dolomit ELF 900, tinted, into the joints with a finger or cloth. Gently remove excess material immediately with a damp Viscose Sponge 1270. When dry, dampen the surface again with a Viscose Sponge 1270 and carefully remove any remaining streaks. When the surfaces are dry, clean them well and sand them again if necessary, then paint them over with Lacryl-PU Wood Sealer 264 gloss, diluted with water 2:1 Stone interpretation techniques Seite 3 von 6

Notes Masking tapes Masking tapes should only be applied immediately before each decorating step and removed again immediately after the work has finished. Perform the decorating steps properly Texture quickly and only once. Repeated texturing of the surfaces will produce visible changes in the surface finish. Take the coating thickness into account If Latex Plastic ELF 904 is applied too thickly, the surface may crack during drying. Additionally, if the relative humidity is high, the plastic texture may sag. Assessing the test areas The description of how this technique is performed is a triedand-tested standard method which can be modified and expanded according to the user's own creativity. The general appearance of a creative technique is determined by the color choice and combination, how the technique in question is performed and by the decorator s individual style. We recommend preparing test areas to get an impression of how the surface will look. Remark This information is the result of many years of practical experience.
