Constructing Details for Deluxe Floor System Deluxe floors include 4x4 runners, standard floors do not Shown below is a typical wood floor. Depending on your area, the construction may have to be changed to meet local codes. When using a concrete slab for a floor, use the same overall foundation measurements. Install foam sill sealer as a moisture barrier between the concrete and the wall plates. Foam sill sealer is available in rolls, 3-1/2" or wider. 1. Cut (2) two 2x4 joist headers to 16' - 0". Layout for 16" on center joist spacing. '' marks where floor joist will be placed. 2x4 Joist Header 15-1/4" 16" 16" 2. Cut 2x4-12' floor joist to 11'-9". Treated lumber may be thicker than 1-1/2". Take this into account when cutting the length of floor joists. Shorten joist measurements if necessary to obtain 12'-0" building width. 16' - 0" Floor Length Flooring Outside Measurement 12' - 0" Wide 2x4 Joist Header 4x4 Treated Runners 2x4 Floor Joist spaced 16" o.c. It is important that the floor be level and square. Square the floor as follows: before nailing the flooring, measure the floor diagonally (corner to corner). Then measure the opposite corners. These measurements will be the same if the floor is square. Box Nails 2 lb. 16d Nail 2x4 joist headers and floor joist to 4x4.

Optional 12'x20' Wood Floor System Shown below is a typical wood floor. Depending on your area, the construction may have to be changed to meet local codes. Foam sill sealer is available in rolls, 3-1/2" or wider. 1. Cut (17) seventeen 2x4-12' treated boards to 11' 8-7/8". These will be the floor joists. 2. Stagger the 4x4 timbers as shown below. Cut (2) two 2x4-8' boards into 2' long blocks to secure the 4x4s where the 4x4s butt together. 3. Cut (2) two 2x4-8' to a length of 8' -0". They will be used for the joist headers. Layout, from left, for 16" on center joist spacing. '' marks where floor joist will be placed. 4. Install the floor joists cut above between the 8' joist headers. Secure with 16d galv. deck nails. 5. Place floor assembly over the 4x4s. Square floor assembly. Measure the floor diagonally (corner to corner). Then measure the opposite corners. These measurements will be the same if the floor is square. It should measure 173". To keep the 2x4 frame from moving, toenail frame to the 4x6 runners. 4x8 Flooring 15-1/4" 16" 16" 4x4-12' Runner 4x4-8' Runner 4x4-12' Runner 4x4-8' Treated Runner 2x4-8' Joist Header 4x4-12' Treated Runner 6. Cut (2) two 2x4-12' to a length of 12' -0". Layout for 16" joist spacing, see above. 7. Install floor joists between the joist headers. Square floor section. Measurement will be 203-5/8". Install this section against the section assembled above. 8. Install 4x8 flooring over the 2x4s. Use 8d galv. spiral nails. Box Nails 5 lb. 16d

Step 1 Assemble Roof Trusses 1. Cut 2x4-12' boards to a length of 12' - 0". These 2x4s will be used for the truss bottom. For a 16' long building cut (7) seven 2x4 boards. For a 20' long building cut (9) nine boards. 2. Position 105-3/4" long pre-cut 2x4 rafters on the 12' board. 3. Temporarily tack 2x4 blocks, packed in kit, around the truss members. This will insure that the trusses are built exactly the same. 4. Position a 2x4-17-1/2" block at the ridge. 5. Position a 20" long 2x4 gable stud at each end of the truss. 2x4 Blocks 2x4-12' 0" x GB Gauge Block Important: To insure the proper overhang, insert a 2x3 gauge block (GB) on each end. Butt the 2x4 truss bottom against the block. Mark this end of the trusses with an '' mark. When you install the trusses later, install all the trusses with this end on the same side of the building. 7. Turn truss over and apply wood gussets to the opposite side of the trusses. Wood Gussets 6. Install wood gussets to secure truss parts in place. Apply wood glue between gussets and 2x4s. Secure top gussets with (12) twelve 6d common nails. Secure the lower gussets with (16) sixteen 6d common nails. 8. Repeat process to assemble the remaining trusses. Do Not remove the 2x4 blocks around the perimeter of the truss until the roof gable are assembled in the next step.

Step 2 Assemble Roof Gables 1. Cut a 2x4-12' board to a length of 12' - 0". 2. Install pre-cut rafters and gable studs as in previous step. Install the bottom gussets. 3. Install 42" and 53" long 2x4 gable studs. Secure gable studs with 1" x 4" metal drive-on plates. 4. Install the upper wood gusset. If installing the optional gable window, install a 2x2 board between the 53" long gable studs. Cut to fit. 2x2 Board 1x4 Drive-on Plate 53" Gable Stud 33" 42" Gable Stud 1x4 Drive-on Plate 5. Repeat steps to assemble another roof gable. 6. Lay gable on flat surface with gussets facing down. 7. Remove 2x4 blocks used to hold truss parts in place. Secure (3) three blocks to the bottom 2x4 using 2-1/2" long wood screws. 2x4 Blocks Gusset Facing Down

Step 5 Assemble Back Wall 1. Cut (2) two 2x4-12' boards to a length of 137". Position the boards together and indicate with '' marks where the wall studs will be located. Top Wall Plate Bottom Wall Plate 137" Wall Plate 19-3/4" 24" 24" 2x4-12' Tie Plate 3-1/2" 84" Long Wall Studs Bottom Plate 2. Install 84" studs between the top and bottom plates. Use (2) two 10d sinkers on each end. 3. Cut a 2x4-12' board to 12' - 0" and install across the top of the wall frame. It will extend 3-1/2" beyond the wall frame on each end. 4. Square wall frame. Measure diagonally (corner to corner). The measurements will be the same when the wall is square. 5. Cut (3) three siding panels to a length of 89-1/4" and install siding flush with the tie plate. The siding will extend 3-1/2" beyond the wall frame. Use 8d galv. nails. Save siding cutoffs for front gable overhang. LAP Edge LAP Siding Extends 3-1/2" Beyond Frame Siding Extends 3/4" Below Bottom Plate Step 6 Assemble Door Header 2x6 Board 1. Locate (2) two 2x6 boards and a OSB filler 75" in length. 2. Assemble the door header using 10d sinkers. OSB Filler

Step 8 Assemble Sidewalls 1. Cut (2) two 2x4-8' to a length of 8' - 0". Position the boards together and indicate with '' marks where the wall studs will be located. 8' - 0" Wall Plates 2. Install 84" wall studs between the top and bottom plates. Use (2) two 10d sinkers at each end of the stud. 3. Repeat to assemble another 8' long wall frame. 23-1/4" 24" 24" If you are constructing a 20' long building, go now to Step 9. If you are installing an optional windows or walk-in door, see the instructions at the back of the book. 8'-0" Wall Plate 4. Butt wall frames together Do Not nail these frames together so they can be separated later. 5. Cut (4) four 4x8 siding panels to a length of 92-1/4". Install the first panel with the 'LAP' edge flush with the left side of the wall frame. The siding should extend 3/4" below the wall plate and 4-1/2" above the wall frame. Install another siding panel. 6. Install another siding panel but do not nail along the long edge that overlaps the other wall frame. You can nail this edge after the wall panels are installed. This will enable you to separate the wall panels making them easier to handle. Cut the last siding panel flush with the end of the wall frame. Do Not Nail This Edge 7. Repeat procedure to assemble the other sidewall. Siding Extends 3/4" Below Bottom Plate Tip: Use 3/4" trim board as a gauge.

Step 14 Set Trusses 1. Install (4) four trusses with the wood gusset on the line and the truss bottom over the '' marks. 2. Secure trusses with the metal hangers and 1-1/2" long hanger nails.

Step 15 Install Loft Flooring 1. Remove 2x4-8' wall braces and install them between the gussets on the rear and front gable panel to support the loft flooring. 2. Install 4x8 sheets of loft flooring on trusses at the rear of the building. Nail flooring to bottom 2x4 of the trusses with 7d coated nails, space 12" apart. 3. Install the remaining trusses and the front gable panel 4. Install flooring at the front of the building. 2x4-8' Board Cut flooring to the center of the 2x4.

Step 16 Install Roof Sheathing & Gable Trim 1. Install 4x8 roof sheathing at the lower back corners. The bottom edge of the sheathing should extend past the end of the trusses to rest on the 1x6 fascia when applied later. See detail 'C'. Make sure the trusses are plumb and the roof sheathing meets the center of the truss. Secure sheathing with 7d sinkers nails. Space nails 12" apart. 2. Install roof sheathing per layout on next page. If you are installing ridge vent, cut sheathing 1" below the peak of the trusses. Insert (2) two plyclips into the roof sheathing between each truss at the top row. The front sheathing will extend past the front gable. 3. Install 1x6 trim, cut in Step 4, on the rear gable, flush with the top of the roof sheathing. Use 8d galv. nails, spaced 12". Cut top row height to fit Plyclip 48" x 48" 48" x 96" 1x6 Gable Trim 48" x 96" Back Wall Detail 'C' Sheathing 2x4 Truss Air Space 1x6 Fascia Ridge vent provides ideal ventilation, preventing heat or moisture from damaging your building or its contents.
