Rewrite Your Money Story Guide Today you ll continue to learn a whole new way of thinking about money, and it s key to getting where you want to be financially. This guide is best accompanied by the related video, walking you through completing this Rewrite Your Money Story Guide. (So print this out and then follow along with the video.) When the video is over, please leave a comment under the video. I d love to hear how the process was for you and what one thing was that you heard about money growing up. I ll respond to every comment! Here, you ll find out what s driving your underlying behavior so you can recognize and break free of the old non-supportive patterns. It s like when you end up dating the same type over and over. When you look back, you essentially dated the same person a handful of times, and had the same kind of problems play out, time and time again. After a while you recognized that pattern -- and it was only THEN you could break free of it. Your relationship with money is similar. The Abundance and Scarcity Loops When it comes to you and your money, you are likely stuck in a pattern right now too, going around a loop -- either the Abundance Loop or the Scarcity Loop. This loop can be positive. The Abundance Loop raises you up exponentially. You experience gratitude for what you have, enjoy peace of mind and a confidence with money. So you make wise choices and financial decisions. You move past debt and into regular saving. Then you re into positive momentum, making it even easier to achieve your financial goals! Or... you could be stuck in the most common Scarcity Loop. And you might know what it s like. You feel the pang of fear, which raises your anxiety. Out of desperation you make a poor choice, which gives you a bad outcome - and it spirals you down as your fears begin to come true. It feels like somersaulting head over heels down a hill, with no end in sight. 1
Chances are you have not chosen the loop you re on. You re there by default. But it does not mean you have to stay in that loop. This is your chance to take destiny into your own hands, and be intentional about which loop you re on. So how do you stop the downward spiral and start the upward momentum? It starts with understanding what drives this behavior in the first place. So, let s find out! Your Money Story Your money story is the culmination of everything you saw, heard, or did around money from childhood to now. From each interaction, you draw a conclusion and thus a belief about who you are, what is possible for you, and how money plays into your life. Then all of these interactions weave together to create a story. But your story is getting written quite unconsciously... and for years. Your story starts from a very young age, like 4-7. So you are essentially living your life today based on decisions you made about what happened starting when you were a young child. (And that is also why you may notice some times when you are triggered and even have a reaction like a 6 year old might!) Then with each future interaction, we look to find evidence for why our beliefs, even and especially these early long-standing ones, are true. 2
We spend the next 10, 20, 30, 40+ years creating our lives based on these same beliefs and thus keep creating more of the same results. We even create an identity (often a non-supportive at first) tied to these beliefs. Then, our beliefs drive our thoughts, which drive our feelings, which determine our actions, thus creating our results. So our results are not an accident. They are actually a result of our beliefs and then of course our results provide us more evidence for our beliefs. So if you believe that you are not good with money, then you likely make poor decisions based on a lack of confidence. Then before you know it, you have more proof that indeed you aren t good with money. Now we get to start to track these beliefs around money to where they started -- your money story. After helping hundreds of people, perhaps even thousands over 10+ years of leading Own Your Money and coaching women, business owners, and couples especially, I have realized one important and helpful piece to this money puzzle: Amidst all of the many interactions you have in your life that have shaped who you are with money, a few pivotal milestone events can shape your entire money story. So if we can source the key events and the related beliefs, and then reframe the conclusions of your 6 year old mind with your now grown up intellect, you can literally break free of your old pattern. Sound good? Let s get you started right now with these 3 simple steps. I have provided a simple template following the three steps to help guide you through this process of rewriting one of your money story pivotal events. Get started now by reading through the 3 steps on pages 4 and 5. Then take just 5 minutes and fill out the template on page 6 following the three steps. 3
Step 1 - Think of your pivotal money story milestones. First, I want you to take a moment now and write down below what some of your pivotal money story milestone events were for you. This is how you begin to recognize your money story. Think of at least one thing that you may have heard, seen, or did around money. It could have been something you saw your parents do -- or not do. This is very prevalent! Or a mistake you made with money, credit or debt. Or a behavior that someone else did that you learned was bad -- perhaps like saving until it got painful -- and you have vowed not to repeat. Step 2 - What conclusions did you draw from that event? Second, now consider what conclusions you reached from the event or events you identified. Just choose one for now to detail out the conclusions you reached. Step 2A: Detail them out in the attached table. All of those conclusions helped to create your perception and recollection of the story. But what were the real facts? Step 2B: Detail out the real facts of the event at the bottom of the attached table. The great news is... because you wrote your story, you can also rewrite your story! You literally hold the pen -- and the eraser. So now it s time to rewrite it with intentionality and your grown up intellect oh, and the facts of the situation! 4
So let s get started on that right now Step 3 - What else could it mean? Create new possible conclusions. You will now rewrite that same incident. What else could it have mean? Keep asking yourself the question, What else could it mean? until you have at least 10 possible conclusions. If the event, has to do with your parents or a sibling, then I d even suggest you reach out to them if they are alive and get more facts on what really happened -- and perhaps what conclusions they reached. All of those conclusions helped to create your perception and recollection of the story. You control the story. You always have. Kind of like Dorothy s red slippers that could always take her home... You are now on your way to Rewriting your money story! Wrap-Up Once you complete the template on the next page for Event #1, I encourage you to continue to think of events and conclusions you reached that have created your entire money story. This is just the beginning -- and a perfect way to gain insight into what has really been driving your entire approach to money and best of all, all that you can do to change your perception of the past and create a whole new future. On the track to your true money destiny! And I promise, in month 2 of the Money Makers Academy I give you a detailed template to weed out ALL the non-supportive beliefs and rewrite your entire money story -- so you go from a Worrier to a WARRIOR!
