EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) is a leading international research-intensive, outwardly-oriented business school in Sweden that conducts research and education in business administration, economics, finance and related disciplines. Located in beautiful surroundings in the city center, SSE is also a vibrant meeting place for business leaders, politicians, journalists and artists. SSE is now recruiting for the Jacob and Marcus Wallenberg Chair in Innovative and Sustainable Business Development and is therefore seeking a scientific leader in a relevant field of research. The holder will also play a crucial role in establishing a new center of excellence. The Chair has been established through a donation from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, one of the largest private financiers of research in Europe. The ideal candidate will have a world-leading research profile in a field closely related to innovative and sustainable business development as demonstrated by an excellent publication track record. She/he will possess experience of, or the ability to develop, inspirational research leadership. Working with SSE s established faculty, including many international scholars and leaders in their fields, and with ambitious junior faculty, the appointee will belong to either the Department of Marketing and Strategy or the Department of Management and Organization. The appointee will promote an integrated, scientifically-based program of research, as well as training, information and documentation activities. The Jacob and Marcus Wallenberg Chair 3

THE JACOB AND MARCUS WALLENBERG CHAIR IN INNOVATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT With the new Jacob and Marcus Wallenberg Chair an exciting intellectual journey begins at SSE. The Chair s research focus is on Innovative and Sustainable Business Development aiming at long-term business success. To achieve this, business activities and managerial practices need to be innovative, to continuously create value for customers, owners, employees and other stakeholders, and to take responsibility for their effects on society. The Chair is oriented primarily towards the areas of organization and management, strategy or strategic marketing. We encourage applicants currently undertaking research in fields such as: business policy and strategy corporate governance entrepreneurship international management international marketing organizational theory social issues of management strategic human resource management sustainable business development technology and innovation management Depending on the research profile of the appointee, the Chair will belong to either the Department of Management and Organization or the Department of Marketing and Strategy. This Chair presents a unique opportunity for an outstanding scholar to make a contribution to international research in the area of innovative and sustainable business development. The ideal candidate will have a prominent research profile, an interest in and talent for academic outreach to the business community and the capacity to build and lead a successful research group. RESPONSIBILITIES The holder of the Chair will have the following responsibilities: Initiating, leading and conducting high-quality, impactful research to be published in top-ranked international publications Playing a significant role in contacts with the business community, and promoting SSE s visibility in the public debate Building up and leading a center of excellence Securing additional external research funding Participating actively in education activities on Bachelor, Master, PhD and ExEd levels Acting as a positive force in the development of SSE QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must fulfill the following requirements: A PhD degree or equivalent in a relevant research area A strong international publication record A significant impact in the research field Proven ability to attract research funding A demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching Excellent communication and inter-personal skills Proof of academic leadership and service Documented experience of supervision of junior scholars In addition, the following requirements are desirable: Documented research experience in an international context Ability to contribute to SSE s visibility and image The Jacob and Marcus Wallenberg Chair 5

THE FUNDERS The Chair is made possible through a donation from one of the largest private financiers of research in Europe. The Chair is made possible through donations from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation and a group of large Swedish companies. In 2016, cousins Jacob and Marcus Wallenberg turn 60 and to mark the occasion these donations are made to enable the establishment of the Chair and a research center at the Stockholm School of Economics. The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, founded in 1917, is one of the largest private financiers of research in Europe. Currently the Foundation grants a total of SEK 1.7 billion (EUR 180 million) per year to various projects, mainly at Swedish universities. The Foundation grants funding in two main areas; research projects of great scientific potential and individual support of excellent researchers. The funding goes mainly to research within the natural sciences, technology, and medicine. The Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation was founded in 1963 and supports primarily clinical medicine, law, and social sciences. The Jacob and Marcus Wallenberg Chair 6

STOCKHOLM SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS We are one of Europe s leading business schools, with a unique business-community network. Our research is internationally recognized and many of our researchers are among the leading figures in their fields. The Stockholm School of Economics is a leading, researchintensive, outwardly-orientated business school in Stockholm, Sweden engaged in research and education in economics, finance, business administration and related disciplines. SSE is a privately-owned business school that receives 78% of its financing from private sources and 22% from the Swedish government. For more than a century, we have educated talented women and men for leading positions within the business community and the public sector. SSE offers bachelors and masters degree programs along with highly-regarded PhD, MBA and executive programs. The School is accredited by EQUIS, which certifies that all of its primary activities teaching as well as research are of the highest international standards. STOCKHOLM SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS RESEARCH Our research centers and their multitude of on-going research projects and programs are representative of the strength, energy and diversity of the research conducted at SSE. With a history going back several decades, many of the research centers have developed mature, strong academic environments and today exhibit theoretically and empirically comprehensive research agendas. Others consist of smaller or newer groups of researchers, often more focused and active within emerging or entrepreneurial academic fields. It is this mix and balance that gives SSE research its unique character.
