. Fabric Preparation and Quilt Top Assembly Determine your fabric layout of the quilt top. To create a quilt size of 30 x 40 described in these instructions, prepare 1 2/3 yard of four coordinating fabrics as follows: - Yellow: 18 x 36 - Yellow: 9 x 58 - Pink: 18 x 36 - Pink: 9 x 58 - Blue: 3 x 58 - Blue: 9 x 50 - Gray: 3 x 40 - Gray: 3 x 52 Fabric will be cut down lengthwise grain. See last page for additional cutting information. If available, tape a rectangle 30 x 40 on a cutting mat to use as a guide for the quilt top placement and alignment. 30 40 30 40 Place the prepared fabric strips, right side up, on the cutting mat. Align in preferred order. Be sure entire rectangle is covered by fabric. Starting with a corner piece, place right sides together with the edges even. Pin the layers together. Note - be sure the area to be stitched is wider than the rectangle tape. Attach the Reverse Pattern Dual Feed Foot #1D. Engage BERNINA Dual Feed. Insert a Microtex #80 needle. Thread needle with thread to blend or use neutral color. Thread coordinating bobbin thread for sewing tension. Select Straight Stitch. Stitch the layers together using a ½ seam allowance. Secure the beginning and end of the seam allowance. Take to the iron and press seam the allowance flat to set stitching. Then press the seam allowance towards the darker fabric panel. Lay the seamed piece right side up in place on the mat. Place the next strip right side down on top with edges even. Pin the layers in place. Make sure the area to be stitched is wider than the rectangle tape. Take to the machine and stitch a ½ seam allowance. 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 2 of 11

Continue stitching and pressing allowance until the entire top is pieced together. Position the quilt top over the mat markings making sure it covers the entire 30 x 40 area. Using a ruler and rotary cutter, trim away excess fabric on all 4 sides to leave a 3 border completely around the 30 x 40 size. New temporary size will be 36 x 46.. Embroidery Preparation Pin the quilt top to a Quilt Wall or piece of batting as a work space. Place pins in fabric to denote the finished 30 x 40 size. Using a tape measure, locate the center of each large fabric panel on which embroidery will be placed. Mark the center of each panel using a marking pen. Using a ruler, mark the center length of each 8 wide fabric panel. Testing has already been done to determine the best embroidery results but always test any embroidery before applying it to the final fabric. Select Embroidery Mode. Set machine up for embroidery. Thread bobbin for embroidery tension. Insert the BERNINA USB stick containing BERNINA Exclusive Embroidery Collection To The Letter #21004 in the.exp format. Select the USB Stick icon. Select the S from the Collection. Change the Hoop choice to Jumbo Hoop. Proportionally increase the S to 150%. If you choose to assign different colors to the letter, do so at this time by touching the Color Number icon and applying the new color numbers. Touch the Color Number icon to close the option. Select Add Motif. Select the W from the Collection on the USB stick. Engage Move Motif. Use the Stitch Width and Stitch Length knobs to position the W to the right of the S as desired. Note the numeric value for the Stitch Length position. Make any desired color changes to the W. 3 3 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 3 of 11

Retrieve both letters. With Move Motif active, turn the Stitch Width knob only counterclockwise to move the S and W to the left allowing room for the addition of EET. Select Add Motif. Select the E from the Collection on the USB stick. Engage Move Motif. Activate the Grid if helpful. Use the Stitch Width and Stitch Length knobs to position the E to the right of the W as desired. Tip - use the same numeric value for the Stitch Length position of the E as was used for the W to keep them on the same horizontal plane; fine tuning could be done later if necessary Make any desired color changes to the E. With the E only active, select Duplicate. Move the second E into place using the same Stitch Length numeric value as the W and first E. Select Add Motif. Select the T from the Collection on the USB Stick. Move the T into place. Proportionally decrease the T to 95%. Make any desired color changes to the T. Retrieve all letters. Touch Move Motif twice to center SWEET. Rotate SWEET 270. Select Change Stitch Type. Reduce the Embroidery Stitch Density to 90%. Touch Check to confirm. Touch Save. Select the USB Stick destination and touch the flashing New. Touch Save again. Select the Machine destination and touch the flashing New. Select New Motif. From the USB Stick Collection, Select the D. Follow the exact same steps to create and Save DREAMS as you did for SWEET. Note - the word will be outside the Jumbo Hoop parameter but it is OK. Select New Motif From the USB Stick Collection, Select the B Follow the exact same steps to create and Save BABY as you did for SWEET and DREAMS Remove the USB Stick containing the saved words from your BERNINA 830 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 4 of 11

Insert the USB Stick into your computer. Open your Embroidery Software whether it be the BERNINA. Embroidery Software V6 or the free on line ArtLink 6. Note - ArtLink was used in these instructions. From the USB Drive destination, open the word SWEET in the Embroidery Software in the.exp file format. Assign all thread colors in the word to black for easier visibility on the printed template. Print a copy of the template for SWEET. Repeat printing a template for DREAMS and BABY. Tape templates together and trim around letters. Highlight the center of each word. Align the paper template centers on the respective fabric panel centers. Fine tune the placement of each word if necessary. Pin in place. Tip - if you move the location of a paper template, be sure to remark the new center point on the respective fabric panel. Hoop one layer of Heavy CutAway Stabilizer in the Jumbo Hoop. Use the Hoop Template to transfer the center markings onto the stabilizer. Extend the vertical and horizontal lines with a marking pen. Spray the stabilizer with 505 Temporary Spray Adhesive. Fold the quilt top section to be embroidered on the marked center lengthwise line. Finger press to set a crease. Place a pin at the center mark on the fabric. Carefully position the fabric onto the sticky hooped stabilizer. using the marked lines and center pin as alignment guides. Unfold the fabric and finger press the remaining half into place. Slide the template back into the hoop to check the alignment of the fabric against the grid lines; remove the template. Attach the Jumbo Hoop to the machine. Open the My Designs Folder. Select the saved SWEET motif. If you determine from the paper templates that some changes are necessary to the alignment of the letters, make them now by Retrieving the specific letter or letters and adjusting as desired. 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 5 of 11

Engage Design Center - the hoop will move so that the needle is in the center of the motif. Engage Move Motif. Turn the Stitch Length and/or Stitch Width knobs to position the needle over the center mark on the fabric. Turn the handwheel to lower the needle into the fabric and check the placement. When in place, touch the Check to go the embroidery ready screen. Activate Color Resequence to reduce the number of thread color changes. Activate Baste Around Motif icon. Thread the machine with the first color of the embroidery motif to create the basting stitch. Tip - try using the foot control when embroidering the basting stitch; you may find you have more control of the speed and fabric. Follow the prompts on the machine and embroider SWEET. Select Single Motif when the stitching is complete. Remove the Jumbo Hoop from the machine and the fabric from the Jumbo Hoop. Trim the stabilizer away around the letters for now; more will be removed later. Prepare another Jumbo Hoop with Heavy TearAway stabilizer and drawn center markings. Spray the stabilizer with 505 Temporary Spray Adhesive. Position the quilt top panel for BABY into place aligning the center of the fabric with the center marking on the stabilizer Attach the Jumbo Hoop to the machine. Select New Motif. Open the My Designs Folder. Select the saved BABY motif. Follow the exact same steps to embroider BABY as were followed to embroider SWEET. Remove the Jumbo hoop from the machine and the fabric from the Jumbo hoop. Trim the stabilizer away around the letters for now; more will be removed later. Prepare another Jumbo Hoop with Heavy TearAway stabilizer. Mark only the center vertical line on the stabilizer. Position the paper template over the stabilizer so that the letters DREA are within the hoop area. Mark the new location of the center of DREAMS onto the stabilizer. Spray the stabilizer with 505 Temporary Spray Adhesive. Fold the quilt top section to be embroidered on the marked vertical center line. Finger press to set a crease. Note the location of the center mark on the fabric. Carefully position the fabric onto the sticky hooped stabilizer using the marked line on the stabilizer and center point on the fabric as alignment guides. 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 6 of 11

Attach the Jumbo Hoop to the machine. Select New Motif. Open the My Designs Folder. Select the saved DREAMS motif. With all letters retrieved, engage Design Center. Engage Move Motif. Turn the Stitch Width and/or Stitch Length knobs to align the needle over the marked center on the fabric. Once in position, touch the Check to confirm the new placement Touch the Check again to be taken to the embroidery ready screen. Note - it is OK that the hoop outline is red as the letters within the hoop will still embroider. Keep Baste Around Motif engaged. Deactivate Color Resequence - even though there will be more rethreading of same colors, you want to stitch one letter at a time so the M is not embroidered. Embroider the DREA and stop. Remove the Jumbo Hoop from the machine and the fabric from the Jumbo Hoop. Trim the stabilizer away around the letters. Prepare another Jumbo Hoop with Heavy TearAway stabilizer. Mark only the center vertical line on the stabilizer. Spray the stabilizer with 505 Temporary Spray Adhesive. With the fabric folded on the center line, align the area where the MS is to be embroidered over the center line marked on the stabilizer. Position the open area of fabric over the stabilizer so that the letters MS are within the Jumbo Hoop. Carefully position the fabric onto the sticky hooped stabilizer using the fabric fold and the embroidered A as alignment guides. Tip - place the fabric onto the stabilizer so that the A is completely within the hoop and the letter E is only partially in the hoop. Finger press the fabric onto the sticky stabilizer. Attach the Jumbo Hoop to the machine. Touch the red X to leave the embroidery screen and go back to the editing screen. Turn off Design Center. Activate Virtual Positioning. Note - with Virtual Positioning active, the needle will move to any stitch touched on the design on the screen; be aware that the hoop will also move to that position. Touch the screen to the upper right of the A. Activate Zoom and Pan. Drag the screen so the entire A is visible. Deactivate Pan. Using your stylus for accuracy, touch at various locations around the letter A with the needle moving to those locations within the hoop. 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 7 of 11

Make sure Move Motif is engaged Turn the Stitch Width and/or Stitch Length knobs until the penetration point of the needle is exactly in line with that stitch on the hooped fabric. Deactivate Zoom. Once in position, touch the Check to confirm the new placement Touch the Check again to be taken to the embroidery ready screen. Keep Baste Around Motif engaged. DO NOT activate Color Resequence. Advance past any colors for the E and A. Embroider the MS. When complete, remove the Jumbo Hoop from the machine and the fabric from the hoop. Carefully remove as much stabilizer from behind the letters as possible using sharp scissors and tweezers. Putting the Quilt Together Press the embroidered quilt top as flat as possible using light steam, Best Press and a pressing cloth. Position the quilt top on the mat so it aligns with the finished size markings. Cut off all excess fabric so the quilt top is the finished size of 30 x 40. Cut the batting exactly 30 x 40. Spray one side of the batting with 505 Temporary Spray Adhesive. Align the trimmed quilt top exactly on top of the sprayed side of the batting and smooth into place. Cut the quilt back to measure exactly 36 x 46. Press a 3 border on all four sides around the quilt backing; this border will be folded in half again and become a frame around the front of the quilt top. Tip - it is helpful if you mark lines at the 3 location using a ruler and marking pen. #2 #1 #3 Miter each corner by folding the border appropriately and pressing during each step. Fold the 3 border in half now to create the finished border width of 1 ½. Press the mitered corners well, using steam, Best Press and a pressing cloth. Press the remainder of the border to the 1 ½ finished width - down the sides, across the top and bottom. Place the prepared quilt back on the mat, right side down, aligning it with the finished size markings on the mat. Fold out the border to expose the entire wrong side of the 30 x 40 finished area. Lightly spray the exposed side of the batting on the quilt front with 505 Temporary Spray Adhesive. 1½ 1½ 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 8 of 11

Position the quilt top, batting side down, exactly inside the finished size of the quilt back; the border should not be covered. Smooth in place and pin all layers together. At each corner of the 3 border, carefully trim a small amount of the excess fabric away to prevent it from showing once the miters are folded into place. Grid Quilting Select the Sewing Mode on the BERNINA 830. Insert a Microtex #80 needle. Thread needle to blend with the first fabric to be quilted. Thread bobbin to match the quilt back and for sewing tension. Select Straight Stitch #1. Attach Edgestitch Dual Feed Foot #10D. Engage BERNINA Dual Feed. Lengthen Straight Stitch #1 to 3.00mm. Select Set Up from the Soft Keys. Select Sewing Settings. Engage the Securing Stitches. Select Next Screen. Activate the Programmable Thread Cutter to sew 4 short running stitches before cutting the thread. Touch the Check to confirm. Touch the red X to leave the Set Up Screen. The first rows of stitching to begin the grid quilting are made in the ditch of the quilt top where the strips are pieced together. Fold the 3 border out of the way. Align the guide on #10D in the ditch of the seam allowance. Start and stop stitching at the edge of the 3 border and not in the border. Use the Auto Thread Cutter at the end of each seam allowance. Change thread colors as desired for the best blending with the fabric strips. Repeat until all seams are sewn in the seam allowances. Attach the Walking Foot with the open toe sole to grid quilt the open areas of the fabric panels. Begin with one of the corner pieces of the quilt top with no embroidery. Align the edge of the Walking Foot against the previous row of stitching as a guide. Stitch rows of grid quilting until area is filled. Repeat for other corner section with no embroidery. To help with grid quilting around the embroidery, use a ruler and marking pen to draw lines across the fabric panel ½ apart. Stop drawing lines ½ away from the edges of the embroidery to create a contour around each word. Thread the needle to coordinate with the fabric panel color. Stitch grid lines across all of the embroidered panels, using the marked lines to assist where you stop and start around the embroidered letters. 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 9 of 11

At the end of a stitched row, use the Auto Thread Cutter to secure the stitches, cut the thread and raise the presser foot. Stitches will secure at the beginning of each row as have been programmed. Grid quilt the three 2 fabric strips ¼ apart using the Walking Foot and coordinating thread color. Lightly press the stitched quilt top being sure to use a pressing cloth. Press the border back into place around the edges. Finishing the Border / Frame Refold the miters at each corner. Pin the miters and border in place. Attach Open Embroidery Dual Feed Foot #20D. Engage BERNINA Dual Feed. Thread needle to match the quilt back. Select Stitch #1329. Increase Stitch Width to 6.0. Increase Stitch Length to 4.00. Move Needle Position to Far Left. Engage Mirror Image Right/Left. Start stitching at the middle of one side. Align the inside edge of the left toe on the presser foot next to the left edge of the folded 1 ½ wide border. Note - the left side stitches will be placed next to the border edge with the bite of the stitch going into the border. At the corners, walk the stitch into the corner, sink the needle into the fabric, raise the foot and pivot the fabric 90. Tip - if you are in the middle of a stitch pattern when you reach the corner; touch Pattern Begin after you povit to start at the beginning of the stitch coming out of the corner. Stitch around the entire quilt border. Using a hand sewing needle and thread to match border, slip stitch the openings to close each mitered corner. Enjoy your sweet dreams, baby! 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc. Page 10 of 11
