Innovation Landscape Report Steering Discussion IRENA Innovation Day: The age of renewable energy Abu Dhabi, UAE 26 May 2016

IRENA Innovation Landscape Report The need for The world needs to decarbonize its energy system by 2050 Market signals alone will NOT suffice. Innovation has a crucial role to play Technical solutions need to be in place by 2030 to allow a transition by 2050 Innovation covers more than technology: Business model and policy framework Objective of an Innovation Landscape report Provide information to support countries in: Identifying priorities to focus efforts Learning from experience, what has and what has not worked? Implementing strategies that do not overlook any aspect for successful Some of the challenges Information is scattered: scientific journals, reports, articles, roadmaps, conferences proceedings or just kept confidential Shifting in focus: from generation technologies into enabling technologies and system integration (e.g. storage, ICT) Link technology and non-technology into a coherent strategy

Scope of the Report from scoping paper Documenting case studies What has worked and what has not worked Focus on systemic and system Data collection and analysis Input (e.g. R&D investment, patents filed) Output (e.g. licenses, exports, start-ups) Outcome (e.g. green growth, achievement of policy targets, reduction of GHG) Deep-dives Major gaps on nontechnology (systemic ) and in integration of technologies into energy systems (system ) Game changer technologies I. Scoping paper - Kelly Gallagher, Tufts University / former Senior Advisor on Innovation to the White House Analysis of needs and gaps on information for RE Authors expertise and literature review 14 interviews with Academia, Government, Private sector and International Organizations N.B. not so much interest in i) technology forecasting and ii) picking technology winners

Scope of the Report from Innovation Week II. Innovation Week More than 200 experts from public and private sector Discussions across the complete life cycle, from R&D to commercialisation Electrification will continue to play a major role in decarbonisation of energy sector Electric vehicles Heating and cooling Industrial processes RE power generation technologies are available Innovation to continue technology improvement Challenges Integrate such technologies into dynamic energy systems system Create the enabling environment: business models, financing, infrastructure systemic

Proposed theme for the first Innovation Landscape report Facilitating the commercializa tion of innovative technologies Innovative business models for VRE Systemic Innovation for the Renewable Power Sector Enabling infrastructure system integration (ICT, DSM, Complementar ities between RE sources) Innovative Finance How to scale-up the global share of renewable power from 23% in 2014 to more than 50% by 2030? Selection and collection of updated data Documentation of case studies Analysis Methodology Surveys with governments, private sector and academia Expert elicitation Literature IRENA s and other organisations information

Input from member countries Feedback on the concept of the IRENA Innovation Landscape report Type of information to be collected and presented in the report Type of analysis needed by countries On the proposed theme Would an analysis on Systemic Innovation for the Renewable Power Sector be useful to your country national plans for the energy sector? How to engage with member countries in this report? Provision of data and case studies National experts working with IRENA analysts Establishment of an Expert Advisory Committee Exchange of staff Other Should this type of report be a sustained activity over time? What could be the theme of the next two or three reports?
