T he John Minor Wisdom Public Service Professionalism Award was established by the American Bar Association Section of Litigation in 1990. It is named for Judge John Minor Wisdom, a scholar jurist of the highest integrity whose tenure on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit is best known for its recognition of constitutional rights of all citizens. Judge Wisdom s decisions establishing the right to vote, implementing equal educational opportunities strengthening the right of effective counsel are marked by wisdom compassion. Each year the Section honors Judge Wisdom through the selection of outsting individuals firms to receive the award that bears his name. The recipients of the Wisdom Awards have made outsting contributions to the equality of justice in their communities, ensuring that the legal system is open available to all. that have made a substantial commitment to public service through their accomplishments in significant pro bono litigation. Each year awards may be given in the following categories: a lawyer in private practice or corporate counsel office a lawyer who is employed by a legal services or other public interest program a law firm. Recipients are selected based on fulfilling one or more criteria of the following: 1. provided sustained, exceptional direct representation of poor, disenfranchised or other under-represented individuals or groups; 2. created new or exped means of access to the legal system for these individuals or groups; 3. provided representation in one or more cases that resulted in significant changes in statutory or case law to benefit these individuals or groups. Selection Criteria* The Wisdom Awards recognize service by career public interest lawyers other lawyers from all parts of practice, including firms, solo practitioners corporate counsel. The Awards also recognize firms The Wisdom Awards Subcommittee of the Section of Litigation s Pro Bono Public Interest Litigation Committee reviews all nominations. The Subcommittee s recommendations are forwarded to the Council of the Section of Litigation for its approval. * Section of Litigation leadership is not eligible for the John Minor Wisdom Award.

Nelson Mullins pro bono program is administered by a firm wide Pro Bono Committee a full time of counsel Pro Bono coordinator. The firm is committed to hling complex pro bono litigation, corporate matters legislative advocacy, as well as individual pro bono representation. The firm has sponsored externships fellowships with several agencies, including the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, the South Carolina Appleseed Legal Justice Center the South Carolina Center for Capital Litigation. In 1997, to mark its own 100th year of service, Nelson Mullins established five centennial fellowships to fund the work of attorneys focusing exclusively on children s issues.

country were re-sentenced. The Firm s client, Bill Witherspoon, won his freedom in 1978 from a parole board, went on to become a respected advocate for reform of the criminal justice system. JEROLD S. SOLOVY This year, Jerold S. Solovy, Chairman of Jenner & Block LLP, celebrates 50 years in the practice of law as an exemplary lawyer, champion of the poor advocate for improving the justice system. Mr. Solovy has hled hundreds of pro bono cases as well as precedent-setting appeals for indigent individuals. Three have gone before the U.S. Supreme Court Kirby v. Illinois (regarding whether an indigent person is entitled to appointment of counsel for conducting a pre-indictment lineup); Reed v. Farley (regarding whether an accused s federal right to a speedy trial is violated when the state court fails to observe a 120-day speedy trial rule because no objection was raised at the time the trial date is set); Ralston v. Robinson (involving the efficacy of sentencing a juvenile offender to an adult sentence). Mr. Solovy also participated in Witherspoon v. State of Illinois, one of Jenner & Block s most significant pro bono efforts in which a planned state execution was stopped just weeks before the sentence was scheduled to be carried out. After the U.S. Supreme Court s lmark 1968 ruling, an estimated 350 people on Death Row across the Mr. Solovy has also been a great leader in the movement for judicial reform. Among the numerous examples of Jerry s influence is his appointment as head of the commission that investigated ways to protect against another Greylord judicial corruption scal in Cook County, Illinois. The Special Commission on the Administration of Justice, also known as the Solovy Commission, made some 200 reform proposals issued numerous reports addressing the judicial selection process, the financial interests of judges, the Circuit Court s anti-solicitation rule. In large part due to Mr. Solovy s example leadership, scores of lawyers have answered the call to contribute to the quality of the justice system for the poor disenfranchised, indeed, for everyone. For decades, Jerry has served as the primary liaison between Jenner & Block the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, which has assigned the Firm s attorneys hundreds of criminal civil appeals to hle on behalf of the indigent. In the words of Seventh Circuit Justice Ilana Rovner, What has been constant... has been [Jerry s] willingness to work for those who would otherwise lack representation, the numbers of young lawyers he has trained to take up the stard.

PETER C. HARVEY Peter C. Harvey was confirmed by the Senate as Attorney General on June 16, 2003. By virtue of his actions accomplishments, he was named Lawyer of the Year for 2003 by the New Jersey Law Journal. It is the first time the Law Journal has bestowed the honor upon any member of the bar. Attorney General Harvey serves as a representative of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) to the Executive Working Group on Prosecutorial Relations. The Executive Working Group includes Attorneys General, District Attorneys representatives of the U.S. Department of Justice. Its principal mission is to encourage enhance federal, state local law enforcement initiatives. In addition to his role with the Executive Working Group, Harvey serves as Chairman of the NAAG Subcommittee on Gang Violence. He is also Chairman of the NAAG Corporate Responsibility Securities Working Group, is a member of the NAAG Task Force on Youth Access to Alcohol. Prior to his confirmation in June, Mr. Harvey had served as Acting Attorney General since February 15, 2003. Previously, he had served as First Assistant Attorney General Director of the Division of Criminal Justice, having been appointed to both positions by Attorney General David Samson on January 17, 2002. During his career, Mr. Harvey has served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey (1986-1989), where he prosecuted cases involving organized crime, narcotics, bank robbery, credit fraud child pornography. He also served as a Special Assistant to the New Jersey Attorney General (1989-1990), where he was the principal drafter of New Jersey s assault firearms law. Mr. Harvey has been a mediator for the United States District Court in New Jersey for the New Jersey Superior Court. He also has served on the Lawyers Advisory Committee to both the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Mr. Harvey was a law clerk for the Honorable Dickinson R. Debevoise, United States District Judge for the District of New Jersey. He was also a partner at Riker, Danzig, Scherer, Hyl Perretti, LLP in Morristown, New Jersey where he practiced principally in the areas of commercial litigation, internal corporate investigations criminal defense in federal state courts. Mr. Harvey represented businesses individuals in a variety of cases including banking, trademark, copyright reinsurance matters. A resident of Somerset County, Mr. Harvey received his law degree from the Columbia University School of Law in 1982, his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Morgan State University in 1979. He was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1989, the New York Bar in 1984 the District of Columbia Bar in 1985.
