Energy efficiency made easy Incandescent light bulbs convert only 20% of electrical energy into light, while wasting 80% in the form of heat. Eurolux Energy Saving Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL s) however convert 80% of electrical energy into light. Now, with the advent of dimmable CFL s, this saving is increased. The control is in your hands in the form of your dimmer switch. Dim your CFL s anywhere between 100% and 20% and see the reduction in your electricity bill. Start saving change to Eurolux CFL s. Eurolux Day/Night Energy Savers are now fitted with adjustable caps. Fit lamp as normal and adjust the sensor outwards. 8

More than just a Dining Room The dining room is no longer simply the place where the members of a family sit together to have their meals. It is like a place to rendezvous, where many important conversations and functions take place. Careful attention should be given to creating the right ambiance and light levels in this room. You want to ensure that comfortable interaction happens around your dining room table. The correct use of colour in the room as well as lighting will help make this happen. If you do lots of entertaining, suspend the light fi tting so that it hangs just above eye level when you are seated. This helps to encourage communication because you can clearly see the person you are talking to. This type of lighting is often used in restaurants. If you have a long or rectangular table, use an elongated fi tting, which will spread the light across the length of the table. If you have a round or square table, use a circular fi tting, which gives a circular rim of light around the table. Rise and fall lights are ideal for breakfast bars, but also useful in a dining room if the dining table doubles as a work table or is used to do jigsaw puzzles. Add dimmable downlighters around the perimeter of the ceiling (spaced 1.5 2 metres apart) so that you can control the amount of light in the room. This allows you to create a brightly lit atmosphere for a large family dinner, or a cosy atmosphere for a romantic meal. Remember that the focus point is the table, and your light source should be positioned in the middle of the table. If your table and light point are offset from each other then consider creating a decorative feature by looping the cord from the electrical point to a point above the centre of your table. Different types of hanging lights also impact on mood creation. Here are some tips: A solid metal pendant won t allow light to diffuse through it, and your ceiling remains dark. This modern look is ideal for cosy, intimate occasions but these fi ttings will also make a room look smaller. You can add uplighters to combat this, unless your room is already large, then you wouldn t want to make it even larger for those cosy occasions. Using a pendant with a glass diffuser is ideal for a small room; however the table will not be as much of a focal point because the light will diffuse through the glass onto the ceiling. Chandeliers are often used in dining rooms and these are ideal if you don t entertain much because they become the focal point rather than the table. Chandeliers create a greater spread of light in the 37

Lighting Artwork for Dining Rooms & Passages The purpose of lighting art is to create a focal point in the room to highlight a feature, such as a sculpture or painting or ornament. Ideally you should light a picture and the frame, but not much of the wall. This will usually create an eclipse of light around the picture, creating a strong point of interest within the room. See How to light artwork elsewhere in the brochure. room, thus reducing intimacy. Add a dimmer switch so you can control mood and light levels. If your dining room is a multi-purpose room e.g. used for jigsaw puzzles, doing homework, or playing pool, then a central fi tting may not be the answer unless you use a rise and fall lamp. Here, dimmable downlighters are your best solution, allowing you to control the amount of light for different situations. Spacing your downlighters equidistant from one another will create pockets of shadows; rather space them in between each other for instance 4 lights in one row, 3 lights in the next row, 4 lights in the last row, etc. Cabinets and Sideboards You can create a focal point within the room by lighting your display cabinet subtly and not overtly. If you have a glass door on your display unit, use cabinet downlighters to light your ornaments, crystal glasses, bone china, etc. Use wall lights on either side of a display cabinet to create a feature in the room. 38
