More than just a Dining Room The dining room is no longer simply the place where the members of a family sit together to have their meals. It is like a place to rendezvous, where many important conversations and functions take place. Careful attention should be given to creating the right ambiance and light levels in this room. You want to ensure that comfortable interaction happens around your dining room table. The correct use of colour in the room as well as lighting will help make this happen. If you do lots of entertaining, suspend the light fi tting so that it hangs just above eye level when you are seated. This helps to encourage communication because you can clearly see the person you are talking to. This type of lighting is often used in restaurants. If you have a long or rectangular table, use an elongated fi tting, which will spread the light across the length of the table. If you have a round or square table, use a circular fi tting, which gives a circular rim of light around the table. Rise and fall lights are ideal for breakfast bars, but also useful in a dining room if the dining table doubles as a work table or is used to do jigsaw puzzles. Add dimmable downlighters around the perimeter of the ceiling (spaced 1.5 2 metres apart) so that you can control the amount of light in the room. This allows you to create a brightly lit atmosphere for a large family dinner, or a cosy atmosphere for a romantic meal. Remember that the focus point is the table, and your light source should be positioned in the middle of the table. If your table and light point are offset from each other then consider creating a decorative feature by looping the cord from the electrical point to a point above the centre of your table.
