Photo Vault Online has now incorporated a section for Clubs in South Africa. With the glitches we so often run into in terms of photos not being submitted on time, incorrect sizing, or worse still, photos that have erroneously slipped through the system, we find that using this system all too appealing. Please get yourself registered; it s quick and easy. We will be moving over to this system as from May 2013. you. For our new members: if you feel that you are not suited to a particular star grading, the Club s committee will gladly evaluate a portfolio of your work to determine which star grading you need to be in. PANNING SHOTS Panning is very simple, just set shutter speed, aperture, hold your camera and pan along with moving subject (tracking motion with your camera). Guess what will you get? Bingo! A sharp subject with blurred background. Of course, you might think this is easy, but it can be a little tricky. SLOWER SHUTTER SPEED Set your shutter speed slower than normal, but not too slow or it will be difficult to obtain a clear subject. For example, to pan a moving car, you may try speed of 1/60 second and play around till you get the best image. Start with 1/30 second for moving subject likes people walking or cycling. press shutter, so smooth motion blur can be achieved from start to finish of your shot. If the auto focus of your camera is not fast enough, you may pre-focus it at the spot your subject will end up in frame. CHOOSE THE RIGHT LOCATION Selecting the right location to pan plays an important role in getting a good image. The place should be safe and without obstacles for panning. You may also consider using a telephoto lens to maintain a certain distance while shooting. Avoid having a background that is messy or too bright in colour, as this will make your subject less attractive. during your shooting session which may help you achieve a clear subject. Practice makes perfect Now, pick up your camera, walk to a nearby street and practice panning. After a few practice rounds, you should be able to master this technique and get a fantastic image. Sometimes, a little bit blur on the subject can add an even more desirable motion effect. The faster the shutter speed, the more clear the background will turn out, and the less motion blur there will be. AUTO FOCUS Activate your camera s Auto focus function, half press the shutter button to lock on, aim and pan moving subject. Let panning continue after fully SAME LEVEL WITH SUBJECT Position your camera at the same level of the subject you are going to shoot. This can help in focusing as to obtain a clear subject in your image. LEAVE SUFFICIENT SPACE TO SUBJECT Another important factor you should consider is leaving enough space between you and your subject. Insufficient space will constrain your pan. USING MONOPOD/TRIPOD Try to use a monopod or tripod Use it for shooting sports, kids or anytime you want to create some motion in your shots. Determination and drive is wonderful goal, no matter the subject. Competitions create competition. A prize gets us thinking about whether we have that one special photograph that may be deemed the chosen one. Club judging and competition judging can be very different. Composition skills certainly must be of a high quality, but many times, an out of the box photograph gets the judges nod of approval. The horizontal dimension of the image has to be at least two and a half times that of the vertical. In the final presentation, where the width of the image is resized to 1920 pixels, the height may not exceed 960 or less pixels. Panoramas may be produced by using any preferred method e.g. cropping, stitching, dedicated panorama cameras etc. Nature Landscapes with human interests as define previously as well as manipulated landscapes are allowed in this category.
Yousuf Karsh has taken photographs that tell a story, and that are more easily understood than many others. Each of his portraits tells you all about the subject. He felt as though there was a secret hidden behind each woman and man. Open (anything goes) * There is an additional section for our 1 Star authors which is also open. The Versatility Trophy is our club s annual competition that is held at the December Club meeting. This is where you will learn the most because the best work of the year will be on display. Each member can submit 7 images (one per category) which have already been submitted at Club and that was judged in the preceding 12 months. Important: You do not have to submit an image in every category only the ones that you have. A certificate is awarded for the best entry in each category. Certificates are awarded in each of the mediums being Slides, Digital and Prints. Three judges each give a score of 1 to 5. The person with the most points for each category wins that category, and the person with the highest overall score wins the title of most versatile photographer of the year!
