Task A Training for a race Imran is training for a 10 kilometre race. He asks his friend Ben, for some training advice. This is Ben s advice: For the first week of training, you should run 4 times. Your training runs should cover a total distance of 20 25km in that week. Your first run should be short - no more than 3km. For every run that is less than 5km, you must do 3 runs of more than 5km. You must have a rest day after your longest run. 1(a) Based on Ben s advice, draw a table to show a training plan for the first week of Imran s training. The table should show the days of the week and the total distance he should run on each of his training days. (4 marks) Page 3 of 16

Imran goes to his local athletics track to train for the race. 1(b) One lap of the track is 400 metres. Imran wants to run 6km. How many laps of the track must he complete to run 6km? (3 marks) Page 4 of 16

1(ci) Imran looks at a running website. It advises this formula to calculate target training pace. Target training pace per km = Target time for 10km + 20 seconds 10 Imran s target time for 10km is 60 minutes. What is Imran s target training pace per km? (2 marks) 1(cii) Imran runs for 2km and checks his stopwatch. This is the time it shows his 2km training run has taken: 12:54 Imran thinks his actual training pace is too slow compared to his target training pace. Is he correct? Explain your answer. (2 marks) Page 5 of 16

1(d) These are Imran s recent 10km training times (rounded to the nearest minute): 65, 63, 61, 63, 62 minutes. Imran knows that his race time is likely to be 2 minutes faster than his training time. Based on these training times, how likely is Imran to complete the race in 1 hour? (3 marks) 1(e) Imran finds some information about last year s 10km race: Number of runners: 620 Number of runners completing race in under 1 hour: 192 Imran wants to finish in the top 30% of all runners. Based on last year s data, would a race time of 60 minutes achieve this? (3 marks) Page 6 of 16

Imran wants to use the 10km race to raise money for charity. He asks people to sponsor him by giving money for each kilometre he runs. This is a copy of Imran s sponsor form: Name Amount per km (p) Mum and Dad 30 Rashid 20 Usmah 20 Ben 10 Isaac 5 Jess 15 Imran has three more friends he can ask to be sponsors: Lily, Niall and Javid. He thinks he can increase the total raised so far by between 50% and 60% 1(f) Record his friends names on the sponsor form with a suggested amount per km which would achieve this. (3 marks) Page 7 of 16

1(g) You should have checked your calculations throughout the task. Use the box below to show how you could check your answer for question 1(ci). The method used for checking must be different from the method you first used to work out your answer. (2 marks) Page 8 of 16

Task B The Bird Table Layla works in a Care home. She wants to make a bird table so that the residents can watch birds feeding outside. She finds guidance about making a bird table on a website. The website suggests that the table is mounted onto a post. The post should be at least 1300mm high. It should also be more than 12cm shorter than the height of the person who will be cleaning it. Layla will be cleaning it. She is 1.56m in height. 2(a) Suggest a suitable height for the post that Layla could use to mount the bird table on. (3 marks) Page 9 of 16

Layla finds this piece of wood. She thinks she could use the wood for the top of the bird table. The top surface of the wood measures 28cm by 28cm. 28cm 28cm The website states that the area of the table should be a minimum of 850cm². 2(b) Is this piece of wood a suitable size for Layla to use? Explain why. (3 marks) Page 10 of 16

The bird table should have 4 edges. Layla will need 4 pieces of wood to make these edges. There should be a 2cm gap in each corner so that the old bird food can be brushed off the table more easily. edges The dimensions of her bird table are 30cm by 30cm. Layla has some strips of wood that she can use to cut the pieces she needs for the edges. She has the following lengths of wood strips: A. 3 strips of 50cm B. 1 strip of 100cm C. 1 strip of 150cm D. 1 strip of 200cm 2(c) Which wood strip or strips would you advise Layla to use? Give a clear reason for your choice(s) and reasons for not choosing the other strips of wood. (4 marks) Page 11 of 16

One of the residents, George, is a keen birdwatcher. Once the table had been built, he noticed that more birds visit the bird table on cold days. Layla decides to see if he is correct. She records the air temperature and the numbers of birds visiting the bird table each day. Here is her table: Day Mon Tues Wed Thurs Fri Sat Air temperature 5 1 7-2 3 (ºC) Number of birds 8 12 6 15 9 2(di) Between Friday and Saturday, the temperature is predicted to drop by 7ºC. If the temperature does drop by 7ºC, what should Layla record as the temperature for Saturday? (2 marks) 2(dii) George thinks that based on the likely temperature, there could be about 18 birds visiting the bird table. Explain why he may think this. (1 mark) Page 12 of 16

Layla buys some bird seed to put out on the bird table. The bag contains 1.8kg of bird seed. 75 grams of bird seed are placed on the bird table each day. 2(ei) How long should this bag last her? (3 marks) The bag of bird seed costs 3.99. She wants to have enough bird seed to last for 12 weeks. The same amount of bird seed is used every day in each full week. Layla needs to calculate how much the bird seed will cost for 12 weeks. 2(eii) How much will the bird seed cost for 12 weeks? Round up your answer to the nearest. (5 marks) Page 13 of 16

2(f) You should have checked your calculations throughout the task. Use the box below to show how you could check your answer for question 2(ei). The method used for checking must be different from the method you first used to work out your answer. (2 marks) Page 14 of 16
