Research Support Unit Our Mission To strengthen the VTC s overall capability to conduct applied research, particularly in the area of Practical Social and Industrial Research (PSIR) 02 Why is Practical Social and Industrial Research Important? To develop, implement and maintain policies that further the VTC s aspiration to pursue applied research of the highest standard Our Work Assisting the Research Steering Committee Administering Various Support Schemes Assisting in the Formation of Research Alliance Providing Support for External Grant Applications Organising Research-related Events Supporting Knowledge Transfer and Commercialisation 02 03

Why is Practical Social and Industrial Research Important? 03 Strategic Research Areas Definition of PSIR 1. Practical Social Research 2. Applied Industrial Research studies that offer new the development and application perspectives on topical social and of technology and know-how cultural issues (e.g. contributions to produce new products, new towards government policy processes, or new applications development and enhancements to address the needs of of the operations of NGOs, industries business and industries) Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) Social Innovation for Ageing Population Goals of Conducting PSIR Environment and Sustainability To increase links with industry To raise staff professionalism To enhance teaching and student learning To enhance the profile and reputation of the VTC and its programmes 04 05

Vocational and Professional Education and Training Scope of Research Vocational and professional education and training (VPET) comes under different names internationally: Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO); Vocational Education and Training (VET) by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and most parts of the world; Career and technical education by the United States of America; and Vocational and Professional Education and Training by Germany and Switzerland. The deliverables and outcomes of this Strategic Research Area would provide valuable support to various industries on manpower training and development, quality enhancement of teaching and learning in VPET and the promotion of VPET to the Hong Kong Government and wider community. 06 07

Social Innovation for Ageing Population Scope of Research To promote health and a better living style for elderly people living in their place of residence or outside the home environment To assist elderly people in overcoming the physical (e.g. illness, disability), psychosocial (e.g. cultural and linguistic differences) and social barriers to carrying out activities of daily living 08 09

Environment and Sustainability Scope of Research Solid waste is a problem for all affluent societies. According to statistical data provided by the Environment Protection Department (EPD) of Hong Kong, the continued growth in waste loads (more than ten thousand tons of solid waste per day) means that Hong Kong will run out of landfill space far earlier than expected, with its existing landfills to be exhausted by 2020 if waste disposal continues to increase at current levels. Deliverables of our working group would provide feasible solutions to such issues, thereby effectively sustain our environment in Hong Kong. 10 11
