Environment and Sustainability Scope of Research Solid waste is a problem for all affluent societies. According to statistical data provided by the Environment Protection Department (EPD) of Hong Kong, the continued growth in waste loads (more than ten thousand tons of solid waste per day) means that Hong Kong will run out of landfill space far earlier than expected, with its existing landfills to be exhausted by 2020 if waste disposal continues to increase at current levels. Deliverables of our working group would provide feasible solutions to such issues, thereby effectively sustain our environment in Hong Kong. 10 11
