Week #1: June 27- July 1 Theme: Art & Literature: Project name: Watercolored Words Supplies needed: Old books to tear the pages out of, pencils/ erasers, scissors, watercolor paint, paintbrushes, water cups Optional- Sharpie pens, construction paper or decorative paper and glue to mount their art Description: Campers will choose a word to illustrate off of an old book page, which they can either cut or tear out. After lightly sketching it onto the page, they will fill in their design with watercolor paint. They may decide to use a Sharpie pen at the end to either outline their art and/or circle certain words on the page. If they choose to, they may mount/frame the book page with construction or decorative paper. Week #2: July 4 July 8 Theme: Art & Music Project name: Musical Drip Painting Supplies needed: Sheet music/ pictures of instruments for reference, canvas or canvas board (1 per camper), pencils/ erasers, tempera paint, paint brushes, palettes, water cups, acrylic medium, tabletop easels (optional) Description: Campers will choose a musical image to paint, whether it be a staff/ music notes, a musical instrument, a musician playing an instrument/singing. After lightly sketching out their idea on the canvas, they ll decide whether they just want their background to drip or their subject. Whatever part they don t want to drip will be painted flat. To create a drippy effect, they ll add water to their paint and either paint while their canvas is vertical for an intense/deep drip or paint their canvas while flat, then lift their canvas to control the drip. Artwork will be sealed with acrylic medium upon completion.
Week #3: July 11 July 15 Theme: 3D Art Project name: Painted Rocks and other Found Objects Supplies needed: found objects, sponges/soap to clean objects, pencils, erasers, acrylic paint, paint brushes, palettes, water cups, acrylic medium Description: Campers will find an object that they find interesting, like a rock, clam shell, or piece of driftwood. Prior to painting on the object, they ll clean it with soap and water to remove any sand/dirt/debris. After the object is dry, they ll be encouraged to find the image in the object maybe their rock looks like an owl, their stick like a flute maybe their object is an empty canvas, open to anything. Before beginning, they may choose to sketch out their idea on their object, then paint it with acrylic paint. Object will be sealed with acrylic medium upon completion. Week #4: July 18 July 22 Theme: Art & Nature Project name: Watercolor en Plein Air Supplies needed: pencils/erasers, watercolor paint, paintbrushes, watercolor paper, sturdy boards/clip boards, bull dog clips/painter s tape (to keep paper from blowing away), water cups Optional- nature pictures (in case of inclement weather), construction paper or decorative paper and glue to mount their art Description: Campers will be invited outside to observe nature. What geometric shapes can they find in what they see? How can they simplify what they see? After discussing rendering and watercolor techniques of their nature study, they ll sketch out their observations with watercolors. If they choose to, they may mount/frame the book page with construction or decorative paper. *In case of inclement weather, observational painting can be done either by sitting inside and looking out the window, or through images of nature.
Week #5: July 25 July 29 Theme: Art & Films Project name: Star of the Show Supplies needed: samples of movie posters/fonts, tempera paint, heavy paper, paintbrushes, water cups, rulers, pencils/ erasers Description: Campers will create a portrait of themselves starring in a movie. They may either make up their own or insert themselves into a pre-existing poster. When creating text, campers will pay close attention to font style and size, as well as color contrast to enhance their image, utilizing rulers when necessary to keep their font consistent and even.. If they choose to, they may mount/frame the book page with construction or decorative paper. Week #6: August 1 August 5 Theme: Art Ages Project name: A Starry Night of Your Own Supplies needed: A copy of Vincent van Gogh s Starry Night for reference, canvas or canvas board (1 per camper), pencils/ erasers, tempera paint, paint brushes, palettes, water cups, acrylic medium, tabletop easels (optional) Description: Campers will study Vincent van Gogh s Starry Night painting and discuss his Post-Impressionist style. They will create their own night scene in a place of their choosing- rural, suburban, urban, by the sea, in the mountains, at the desert, in outer space After sketching out their scene, they ll paint it, using a palette heavy with blues, black, white, and cool yellows. Their sky portion will emulate van Gogh s style, using heavy brush strokes and creating swirls around their moon(s) and stars.
Week #7: August 8 August 12 Theme: Art & Architecture Project name: One Point Cityscape Supplies needed: Pencils, erasers, rulers, watercolor paint, paintbrushes, water cups, watercolor paper Optional- Sharpie pens, construction paper or decorative paper and glue to mount their art Description: Campers will learn how to create an artwork in linear perspective, using a ruler and pencil to create horizontal, vertical, and orthogonal lines, then paint with watercolors. If they choose to, they may outline their artwork when dry with Sharpie markers and mount/frame the book page with construction or decorative paper. Week #8: August 15 August 19 Theme: Art & Psychology Project name: Zentangled Sea Supplies needed: Zentangle reference cards (teacher will provide), watercolor paint, paintbrushes, water cups, watercolor paper, Sharpie pens Optional- construction paper or decorative paper and glue to mount their art Description: Zentangles are also known as yoga for your brain as the repetitive actions of repeating lines, shapes, and patterns can bring about a meditative state, one that is calming and peaceful. Campers paint waves using just one color, but alternating shades between sections. After paint is dry, they will fill each section in with a different pattern or tangle with a Sharpie pen, either using the cards as reference or creating their own pattern. At the top of their sea, they can choose an object to add, such as a boat, lighthouse, or octopus, then paint it with a contrasting color. If they choose to, they may mount/frame the book page with construction or decorative paper.
Week #9: August 22 August 26 Theme: Art & Movement Project name: Window to the Seasons Supplies needed: Construction paper, scissors, watercolor paint, heavy white paper, paintbrushes, bamboo skewers/small dowels, masking tape, Sharpie pens Description: (project a bit different from image) Campers will create a window frame out of construction paper, leaving the frame thick on either side so that the width of the open space is equal to the total closed space on the sides. Using two sheets of white paper and dividing each in half for a total of 4 spaces, they ll create the same scene on each section representing each season (or the same scene at different times of day or in different weather) using watercolor paint. When dry, all scenes will be taped together so that they form a loop. The skewers/dowels will be taped to the back of the window frame and the loop going around them, so that the scene can be changed behind the frame whenever the viewer would like. Week #10: August 29 September 2 Theme: Art & You Project name: Watercolored Words Supplies needed: Heavy paper, sharpie Markers, watercolor paint, water cups, paintbrushes, pencils, erasers Optional- construction paper or decorative paper and glue to mount their art Description: Campers will draw an abstract version of their face, outline with Sharpie marker, then fill in each solid area with a different color of watercolor paint. If they choose to, they may mount/frame their art with construction or decorative paper.
