General information 1 / 17 SF 6 -gas Sulphur hexafluoride (molecule) Sulphur hexafluoride is a non-toxic, inert, insulating and quenching gas of high dielectric strength and thermal stability. colourless odourless 5 times heavier than air temperature resistant up to 500 C Insulating and cooling gas chemically inert non-toxic non-inflammable SF 6 is an important medium in the electrical industry where it is used as quenching and insulating gas for enclosed medium and high voltage switchgear. DILO D-87727 Babenhausen C 3187-00 5

General information 2 / 17 Safety first! National and international committees established concepts for safe and environmentally friendly SF 6 -gas handling. The primary objects of these directives are: SF 6 -emissions should be avoided wherever possible. Complete recovery of SF 6 -gas down to min. 20mbar by using up-to-date maintenance devices. Maintenance is carried out by qualified personnel only. Monitoring: Operators and manufacturers give a report on their SF 6 consumption rate. The personnel working with SF 6 -gas is trained regularly. As from 4 th July 2009 only certified personnel is allowed to recover SF 6 -gas in the EU states in accordance with the EC 305/2008 directive. Manufacturers are obliged to take back equipment containing SF 6 -gas. Global warming potential (GWP) Examples: CO 2 (carbon dioxide) 1 Tetrafluorethane R-134a, HFC-134a 1 430 CH 4 Methane 25 Fluorinated hydrocarbon FKW/HFKW up to 14 400 Carbon monoxide N 2 O 298 Sulphur hexafluoride SF 6 22 200 SF 6 has a high global warming potential DILO offers solutions to avoid SF 6 emissions! 6 C 3187-00 DILO D-87727 Babenhausen

General information 3 / 17 Directive on fluor gases Valid for fluorinating greenhouse gases - HFKW fluorocarbons HFC - FKW fluorocarbons PFC - SF 6 -gas sulphur hexafluoride (EC) 842/2006 Directive on fluor gases (EC) 305/2008 Minimum requirement for the certification of personnel (EC) 1493/2007 Definition of the form of report (EC) 1494/2007 Definition of labelling Aim: limitation and reduction of emission for fluorinating greenhouse gases As from 4 th July 2009 only certified personnel is allowed to recover SF 6 -gas. Area of application: EU (27 countries) Publication on 14 th June 2006 SF 6 is a major greenhouse gas with a global warming potential of more than 22,000 times higher than that of CO 2. Therefore, it is important to measure, monitor and capture SF 6, contributing significantly to environmental protection. - carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) - methane (CH 4 ) - carbon monoxide (N 2 O) also known as laughing gas - partially halogenated fluorohydrocarbons H-FKW/HFCs - perfluorinated hyrdocarbons FKW/PFCs - sulphur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) 170 members of states ratified the Kyoto protocol and committed to reduce emissions by 5.2% as from 2008 2012 (compared with values of 1990). By using DILO SF 6 maintenance devices you meet the directives of national and international guidelines. (Recovery of SF 6 -gas down to 20mbar (2kpa) in accordance with IEC 62271-303 table 13, paragraph 4) DILO D-87727 Babenhausen C 3187-00 7

General information 4 / 17 Use of SF 6 in medium and high voltage switchgear for more than 40 years. SF 6 maintenance devices, being equipped with compressors and operating entirely without oil and suction pumps for reclaiming SF 6 down to 1 mbar, are manufactured in accordance with the state-of-art technology. DILO measuring devices have been designed for verification of the SF 6 -gas quality for direct reuse of SF 6 in case the gas quality corresponds to the IEC60480 directive. New measuring devices are equipped with an integrated gas return system. DILO couplings are self-closing so that there is no loss of SF 6 -gas when connecting and reconnecting hoses on both ends. Since 2002, DILO measuring devices have been equipped with self-closing couplings. The measuring gas can be collected by means of the analyser discharge recovery system. 8 C 3187-00 DILO D-87727 Babenhausen

General information 5 / 17 Advantages of DILO SF 6 service carts All components used in SF 6 circulation such as compressors suction pumps vacuum compressors operate entirely without oil. Contamination of SF 6 -gas is not possible! Automatic drying and purification of SF 6 -gas during recovery and filling of SF 6 -gas Exchangeable filter cartridges The self-closing couplings guarantee safe SF 6 -gas handling, i.e.: No escape of SF 6 -gas No mixing with air The latest generation of our SF 6 maintenance devices provides comfortable operation via a 10 touch panel. Liquefaction of SF 6 -gas via pressure of the compressors. Storage in standard SF 6 bottles is possible. DILO D-87727 Babenhausen C 3187-00 9

General information 6 / 17 Reuse of SF 6 -gas SF 6 -gas must be handled in a closed cycle to avoid SF 6 emissions. The diagram illustrated below explains a closed reuse concept by using DILO components. DILO measuring devices are designed to check the limit values for the reuse of SF 6 -gas according to the IEC 60480 directive for reuse gas. State of the art SF 6 -gas handling 1. Measuring the gas quality with a multi-function device (3 in 1) Decomposition products SF 6 volume percentage Dew point temperature The measuring gas is collected in an internal storage tank and is pumped back in the gas compartment after measurement. The measuring values can be stored in the device. 2. Recovery of contaminated gas, preparation and storage in liquid or gaseous form. 3. Registration of the recovered SF 6 -gas quantity (monitoring). 4. Measurement of the prepared gas (see item 1.). Collecting the measuring gas and pumping it back in the storage tank. 5. If the purified SF 6 -gas does not exceed the limit values of the IEC 60480 directive it is allowed to be reused. SF 6 -emissions should be avoided wherever possible! 10 C 3187-00 DILO D-87727 Babenhausen

General information 7 / 17 Basic functions of measuring devices Determination of SF 6 -gas condition Regular control of the gas quality is recommended in order to maintain the operational reliability of SF 6 -switchgear. Thus, gas contamination could be detected and eliminated in time before any failure of switchgear arises. The measured gas quality is an indicator for the following parameters: decomposition products (on SO 2 (sulphur dioxide) basis SF 6 -concentration in gas quantity (percentage) dew point temperature SF 6 -Multi Analyser - SF 6 concentration (%) - moisture concentration - SO 2 concentration (ppm V ) SF 6 Analyser 973 measurement of humidity and purity in gas insulated SF 6 switchgear Portable SO 2 measuring device Portable moisture measuring device Discharge gas collection unit SF 6 -volume percentage measuring device The purifying and reusing method is determined based on the measuring results. If the gas quality corresponds to the IEC 60480 regulation for reused SF 6 -gas it can be used without any additional treatment. (Follow the operating instructions of the switchgear manufacture.) DILO D-87727 Babenhausen C 3187-00 11

General information 8 / 17 Basic functions of service carts Function: Recovery of SF 6 During the recovery of SF 6 -gas from circuit breakers the gas flows automatically through dry and particle filters where decomposition products, moisture and solid particles are retained effectively. For heavily contaminated gas ( 100 ppm SO 2 ), as well as for gas the quality of which is undefined it is absolutely necessary to install an additional pre-filter upstream from the gas handling device in order to protect the device from decomposition products. The time interval for exchanging the filter cartridges cannot be standardized as it depends on several factors. For this reason it is recommended to measure the gas quality. Gas handling device SF 6 circuit breaker Storage Recovery of SF 6 -gas: storage in gaseous or liquid form with oilfree suction pump down to 1 mbar (no SF 6 -gas emission) corresponds to the IEC 62271-303 directive (recovery of min. 2 kpa (20 mbar)) with oilfree vacuum compressor down to pa 50 mbar - residual gas emission 0.3 kg/m 3 vol. 12 C 3187-00 DILO D-87727 Babenhausen

General information 9 / 17 Function: Evacuation of air or nitrogen Prior to filling with SF 6 -gas the gas compartments must be evacuated to avoid mixing with air. For this, (oil-lubricated) vacuum pumps are used which only deliver into the atmosphere. They are only used for the evacuation of air. The evacuation of gas compartments before refilling with SF 6 -gas is only possible down to 1 mbar. Vacuum pumps with a higher final vacuum are available. Gas handling device SF 6 circuit breaker Storage exhausts into the atmosphere Evacuation of air to a final vacuum of < 1 mbar. DILO D-87727 Babenhausen C 3187-00 13

General information 10 / 17 Function: Filling of SF 6 (to operating pressure) The purified SF 6 -gas can be filled back with overpressure or by means of the compressor in the gas compartment to the required operating pressure of the SF 6 -switchgear. The gas quality must correspond to the IEC 60480 directive for used SF 6 -gas (observe the instructions in the operating manual of the switchgear manufacturer). When filling back, the SF 6 -gas is led through the dry filter and particle filter once again. SF 6 -gas stored in liquid form is converted into gaseous form via the evaporator. Gas handling device Storage SF 6 circuit breaker 14 C 3187-00 DILO D-87727 Babenhausen

General information 11 / 17 Purification of SF 6 -gas for reuse Each gas handling device is equipped with dry and particle filters. The dry filter allows safe absorption of gaseous decomposition products and moisture. The filter cartridge is filled with AI 2 O 3 and molecular sieve and can easily be exchanged. The existing tubing does not have to be opened. The particle filter serves for filtering solid particles and decomposition products out of the SF 6 -gas. The filter cartridge is folded to a cylinder with star-shaped cross section. A retention rate of 100 % is obtained as from a particle size of 1.0 µm. More details are described in the operating instructions.
