Roman coin hoard from Grove Farm Scattered hoard of about 200 Roman bronze coins found 1996 to 2013 The coins were found scattered over an area of approx 30m by 30m. A few small Severn Valley Ware pottery shards could be seen in the plough soil. Iron making slag (bloomery slag) and other furnace waste is evident in the soil. A bronze stylus and a few other Roman artefacts were found in the close vicinity. March 1996. 1 coin of Constantine I AD 307 337 First find, thought to be just a casual loss. January 1997 1 coin of Constantine I Found in same area but no hoard suspected. September and October 50 coins found. Comprise Constantine I 22 coins Licinius 5 coins Unidentified 23 coins Found three coins in same vicinity. Gave area intensive search and unearthed a total of 50 coins. They were reported and sent for identification to The British Museum and classed as treasure (being over 10 bronze coins from single location). August 2000 95 coins found With permission of landowner removed from a small area approx 12 inches of top soil. Found 95 coins. Coins sent to British Museum for identification Sept 2001 & Sept 2002 23 coins found Further searches after ploughing revealed a further 23 coins. Sent to BM for identification. Detector Finds from Grove Farm, Taynton. Part of Roman Buckle 14 further Roman coins were found at this time and submitted to Glos Museum. Jan 2001 Roman bronze Writing Stylus. Found close to coin hoard. Length 85mm It is believed that they were-used for writing on a wax filled recess in block of wood. Jan 2001 Roman Bronze Handle Attachment found by coin hoard British Museum Report 15-2-01 :-Lozenge shaped plate and open loop. Ht 4.6 cm, width 2.5 cm, weight 13.2 g. This object is undoubtedly Roman, though it cannot be closely dated. Jan 2001 Silver Finger Ring found close to coin hoard. Internal diam. 2cm, width of hoop 4mm. Weight 2.7g. Silver content 96%.
