2 FUNDRAISING IDEAS You can raise money for Saint Francis Hospice while having a lot of fun at the same time the two go hand in hand. Below are a few ideas of events guaranteed to raise funds. SPONSORED WALK Plan a sponsored walk in the local park or in a leafy part of the countryside and ask walkers to get sponsorship. You could make quite an impression if you all dress in orange DAY Encourage your colleagues to make a statement and dress head to toe in orange or accessorize with an orange tie, socks, scarf or jewellery. Ask people to donate 1 (or more!) for the privilege! You can raise more funds by selling cakes (with orange icing), holding a raffl e or pinning our Go Orange Game Card to the noticeboard and inviting everyone to have a play. BIG BREW Everyone loves tea and cake it s a fact of life so hold a Big Brew. All that s required for guaranteed success are people to attend, a location and food and drink. You could stick with the classic combo of tea and cake or go more classy and host a wine and cheese evening. We have special Big Brew kits to support your event, email fundraising@sfh.org.uk if you d like yours. QUIZ NIGHT Nothing beats a good quiz, so fi nd your inner quizmaster and host a quiz night! Ask guests to bring their own booze and nibbles or rope in a fi sh and chip van and provide a hot meal and up your ticket price. You could ask your local pub to get involved, too. We have pre-written questions if you need them.??? CURRY NIGHT The essential components here are curry, beer and people who like curry and beer! If you re a keen cook then you could host it at your place and ask for donations for your grub or speak to a local curry house and see if they re willing to offer a deal for your guests i.e. 10 per meal with 50% donated to Saint Francis Hospice. ORANGE WIG CHALLENGE Below you will see our glorious orange wigs, which you can buy from us for 5. We challenge you to wear a wig to work and get your colleagues to sponsor you. Make the challenge as embarrassing as possible for yourself i.e. pick a day featuring an important meeting. It doesn t have to just be you taking part, challenge others too! Still stuck? We have an A-Z of fundraising ideas on our website for you to download.
3 PLAN YOUR FUNDRAISING So you ve chosen your event? Excellent! Please let our fundraising team know. We can give you advice and tips and provide you with any additional kit you need. Tick our event planning checklist off as you go! Contact the fundraising team on fundraising@ sfh.org.uk or call 01708 771431.? DECIDE HOW TO GENERATE FUNDS SET A BUDGET Will your event be ticketed, will people be asked to donate on arrival or can you ask for sponsorship? Will you be selling cakes or hospice merchandise? Having a raffl e, tombola or your Go Orange Game Card at your event is a great way to raise extra money, as everyone loves the chance to win a prize! Let the fundraising team know in advance if you are approaching local businesses for prizes as we can provide you with a Letter of Authority. Do let us know which companies help you because we can send them a special thank you letter. Setting a budget for your event is most important to ensure you don t spend more than you make! Write a list of everything you will need for your event, how much it will cost and how you plan to make that money back. You might be able to get some things for free or at a reduced rate as you are raising funds for a charity, so don t be afraid to ask! CHOOSE YOUR VENUE Selecting a venue depends on how many people you are planning to invite to your event. If you are getting a few friends together for a coffee morning then your house or back garden is the perfect place to start! If you want to invite a larger group or have the event open to the public, you will need to hire a venue, so why not ask your local pub or cafe if they can help? Again, don t be afraid to ask for discounts! Be sure to ask the venue management if they have insurance and licences for food, alcohol, music and entertainment. Also contact your local authority to check if you need additional permits or permissions. For any event you organise it s important to make sure it s safe and legal. SET A DATE & TIME Choose a date and time that will suit you and your guests and your venue! Do remember to check that there are no national holidays or large community events happening in your local area that will affect the attendance at your Go Orange event. THINK ABOUT INVITES Make a list of everyone you d like to invite and ask guests to RSVP or buy tickets before a certain date. This will make planning easier and help you to work out quantities for raffl e prizes, food and drink, merchandise etc. Consider setting up a unique email address for your Go Orange event to help with managing RSVPs and other questions. Think about the employers of your friends and family, and the companies where your guests are employed could their employer donate an item to your raffl e or to the event itself or consider match funding? (see page 7) Once you have decided on a date, time and venue, you re ready to tell the world about it!
4 SPREAD THE WORD Your event is coming together nicely, so it s time to let the world know. DESIGN A POSTER! USE THE WORLD WIDE WEB Create posters, flyers, banners whatever you re capable of! You can also use the events poster in our pack - please let us know if you d like some more. We can also supply you with our logo and font file, so your posters are recognisable and follow our brand guidelines. You could place posters in local shops (if allowed!), on your front gate or at your work. It s also worth thinking of local businesses who may let you leave flyers on their counter top. Once you ve told us about your event, we can place it on our website. You just need to tell us all the essential information, including location, date and time, plus anything else you d like us to say to attract people to your event. A photo would be great too, if that s something you can supply. There are lots of local websites that allow you to upload events, so that s also worth investigating. LET THE PRESS KNOW USE SOCIAL MEDIA You can contact your local newspaper or parish magazine and ask them to mention your event. We also have a fantastic press team at the hospice, so if you would like a helping hand and you have an interesting story or unique fundraising event for us to share please let them know by emailing press@sfh.org.uk Set up an event on Facebook and invite all your friends, then use it to keep them informed on the event as it progresses! You can also post updates about your preparation using your social media platform of choice, so people are subtly reminded about your exciting upcoming event. 5 COLLECT & MAXIMISE YOUR FUNDS The way you will be collecting money will vary depending on your event. We have advice on collecting sponsorship, boosting your income using match funding and Gift Aid. SPONSORSHIP You can download our sponsorship form from our website, but we recommend that you set up a Justgiving page online, so you can email or share the link on your social media pages. Also, your supporters can donate easily and securely using their credit or debit cards. Their administration fee is low and it s an organisation we ve worked with for many years. 1. Visit www.justgiving.com/stfrancis and click on fundraise for us. 2. Create your account following the steps, starting with your email address and contact details. 3. You will then be asked what are you doing and will need to select from four options, and then answer the questions related to that choice. 4. Create your page. JustGiving have lots of advice on how to make more from your page, such as using photos and writing a personal message about why you re fundraising. You can download their full guide on our website. 5. Choose your page theme and click save and continue. 6. You can now share the link to your page and update it as often as you like - and watch the donations add up! There are other online sponsorship websites, please give us a call if you re not sure. MATCHED FUNDING Some workplaces, in particular banks and building societies, operate Matched Funding or Pound Matching. It is a great way for companies to recognise and support their local charity. GIFT AID The hospice is able to claim back 25% from the government on every donation from a UK tax payer - at no cost to you! Justgiving reclaims Gift Aid automatically and we can do the same via your sponsor forms but only if each sponsor fi lls in their name and home address. It s super easy and makes a big difference to your fundraising total. DATA PROTECTION If you collect any personal information from your supporters e.g. their address or telephone numbers, please ensure you don t pass the data on to any third parties to ensure you comply with the Data Protection Act 1998. PSST.. HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT OUR HAMPERS? Our hampers always go down a treat at fundraising events. We will create them for you and provide you with a game card of 100 numbered squares. All you need to do is choose a winning number between 1-100, sell the squares on the card in exchange for a donation and write the person s name in the box. Once the card is full, reveal the winning number and the person who chose that square wins the hamper full of goodies. Simple, but effective! When a member of staff takes part in a fundraising event, like a sponsored walk or marathon, their workplace will give them money to match the amount they have managed to raise. So, if a member of staff raises 200, their employer will match it and bring the fundraising total to 400. Each workplace that provides match funding will have a slightly different policy.
