aircraft in the spotlight: boeing 737 50 years ago, on April 9, 1967, the Boeing 737 flew for the first time from Seattle, WA. It was a 737-100, the first member of one of the most successful aircraft families in history with more than 14,000 ordered. The 737 was developed as a short-haul airplane to join and augment the 727 already in airlines fleets. The airplane started its development phase looking very similar to the 727, with engines mounted in the back and a T-tail. The man behind the current 737 look was none other than the most famous aircraft designer, Joe Sutter, the father of the 747. He moved the engines under the wing, lightening the entire structure and selected a conventional tail design. In February 1968, the Boeing 737 entered service with Lufthansa after a $150 million development program, powered by Pratt & Whitney JT8D-1 engines. In response to a United Airlines order later in 1965, Boeing started development of the first variant of the 737, the 737-200, a 76 in stretch of the original design. This marked the beginning of a long history of continuously evolving 737 variants that will include the 737 Classic (-300, -400 and -500) in the 1980s, the 737 NG (-600, -700, -800, -900) in the late 1990s and the 737 MAX (-7, -8, 200, -9), the latest version that will enter service this year. The 737 family also branched out in the business jet market, forming the foundation for all the BBJs (Boeing Business Jets) produced. Through the years the engines that power the 737 have changed as well. The original JT8D was replaced by the CFM56-3 in the Classic, the CFM56-7B in the NG and finally the CFM LEAP-1B in the MAX. With the winglets, introduced on the NG models, the engine diameter has been one of the clear visual differentiators between 737 families: imagine that the fan diameter has increased from the 39.9 in of the -100/-200 to the 69 in of the MAX! Over the years more than 100 airlines have operated Boeing 737s and the largest all-737 fleet in the world is Southwest Airlines with over 700 in service. Nearly a decade ago, acquired its first Boeing 737, an ex-aloha Airlines B737-200, tail number N808AL. This was second purchased aircraft type and a significant strategic decision for the company. It was also the first of many more B737 Classics and NGs that would become part of the company s portfolio throughout the years. entered the 737 market because they understood the strong market demand for it and listened to their customers needs. Today, offers a diverse range of components, systems and engines for the 737 market, from the CFM56-3 and -7B engines and engines components to the Honeywell Display Electronic Unit, GE Aviation Systems (ex-smiths Aerospace) FMS as well as the Honeywell GTCP131-9B APU. In 2008 acquired its first Boeing 737, an ex-aloha Airlines B737-200, tail number N808AL. PHOTO CREDIT: Royal S King / Airliners.net AMERICAS +1 480 940 1037 Europe +353 1 905 2900 WWW..AERO
