Helmet Ear Flap (make 2 alike) With 3¾ mm needles, cast on 2 sts. 1st row: (RS). Inc 1 st in first st. K1. 2nd row: Knit. 3rd row: Inc 1 st in each of first 2 sts. K1. 4th row: Knit. 5th row: Inc 1 st in first st. Knit to last 2 sts. Inc 1 st in next st. K1. Rep last 2 rows, until there are 17 (19) sts, ending with RS facing for next row. Leave sts on a spare needle. Body of Helmet: With 3¾ mm needles, cast on 7 (8) sts. Using same needles, knit across 17 (19) sts of first Ear Flap. Cast on 29 (30) sts. Knit across 17 (19) sts of second Ear Flap. Cast on 7 (8) sts. 77 (84) sts. Work 5 rows in garter st (knit every row). **Next row: Knit. Next row: K2. *P7 (8). K4. Rep from * to last 9 (10) sts. P7 (8). K2. Rep last 2 rows 3 times more. Work 6 rows in garter st.** Work from ** to ** once more. Cont even in stocking st until Body of Helmet measures 3½ (4) ins [9 (10) cm], ending with WS facing for next row. Next row: P10 (6). [P2tog. P16 (5)] 3 (10) times. P2tog. P11 (6). 73 sts. Twisted Cord: Take 3 strands of yarn, each 30 ins [76 cm] long. With all 3 strands tog hold one end and with someone holding the other end, twist strands to the right until they begin to curl. Fold the 2 ends tog and tie in a knot so they will not unravel. The strands will now twist themselves tog.
