Level 4-7 The Enchanted Castle Workbook Teacher s Guide & Answer Key

Teacher s Guide A. Summary 1. Book Summary One holiday, Jerry and Jimmy, together with their sister, Cathy, found a cave in the forest that took them to another forest. There, they came upon a castle and a girl who seemed to be an enchanted princess. That was what she pretended to be, but she was really just a girl named Mabel. However, Mabel did know about a treasure room in the castle. There was a ring in the room that made people disappear, and the children had a lot of fun doing magic tricks with it. The ring could also turn into a wishing ring, and the one wearing it could have a wish come true for a short time. One day, the children visited the castle with the school nanny. They met the castle owner, and it turned out that he and the nanny had been in love long ago. But they couldn t get married then because he was poor. He was still poor, but then the children showed him the treasure room. Now he and the nanny could get married. The nanny put the wishing ring on and wished that it would become just a plain wedding ring. It did, and they got married and lived happily together. The children came to visit them often. 2. Chapter Summary Chapter 1 Jerry, Jimmy, and Cathy were two brothers and a sister. Jerry was the oldest, and Jimmy was the youngest. The brothers went to a boy s school, and Cathy went to a girl s school. One holiday, they couldn t go home, so they stayed at Cathy s school. Jerry brought some flowers for the school nanny, and she let the children go into the forest. Chapter 2 The children got lost in the forest and found a cave. In the cave was a long, dark passage that took them to another place with a forest and a castle. There was a maze in the castle s beautiful gardens. The children followed a string that led to the center of the maze. There they found a sleeping girl. Cathy thought it was an enchanted castle. She looked at the sleeping girl s clothes and said that she must be 100 years old. Jerry said she was an enchanted princess, and Jimmy kissed her to wake her up. Chapter 3 The princess woke up and took them to her treasure room, but there was nothing there. She had the children close their eyes, and she said some magic words. Suddenly, the room was 2

filled with treasure. Cathy found a plain ring that didn t look expensive. The princess said the ring could make people disappear. The children closed their eyes, and the princess disappeared. But it was a trick. The girl was really Mabel, the niece of the maid at the school. The room had special walls that went up and down when she pushed a button. And she disappeared by simply hiding from the others. However, she discovered that the ring really made her disappear. She couldn t take it off her finger so that she could reappear. In the end, she went back to the school with the children. Chapter 4 Since no one could see Mabel, the kids used her to perform magic tricks for an audience. Jerry put a scarf on his head and pretended to be from India. He did many tricks, but no one knew that it was Mabel who was helping him. At the end of the performance, Jerry disappeared. The ring had come off Mabel s finger, and she gave it to Jerry while she hid. Jerry went to the castle and played with Mabel until late before he went home. Chapter 5 The ring fell off Jerry while he slept, so the others could see him in the morning. They stayed home and played that day, and Mabel came over. They acted out a play for the nanny and the maid. In the play, Jerry gave the ring to Mabel. She put it on and made a wish, which changed the ring into a wishing ring. Her wish came true. The ring gave one wish to the person wearing it, but the wish was only true for a short time. Jimmy wished to be rich, and he became a rich old man. He and Jerry went to London. There, Jerry tricked Jimmy into giving him the ring, and he wished them back to the castle before the magic disappeared. Chapter 6 One day, the castle was open to the public. The children and the nanny went, and they met the owner of the castle. The nanny and the owner were surprised and happy to see each other. They had been in love years ago, but they couldn t get married because he didn t have enough money. He was still poor, and he didn t know about the treasure room until the children showed him. The treasures were sold, and the castle owner married the nanny. The nanny wished for the ring to be just a plain ring for her to wear at her wedding. And so it was. They had a happy life, and the children visited them often. 3
