GOAL-SETTING WORKBOOK NAME: GWL3O Mr. Barter

Part 1: SMART Goal Setting Guide The SMART goal-setting guide will help you to think about how you set goals and teach you a pattern for setting goals that will lead to success and will get results more consistently. Work through this part paying attention to the things you can do to improve your goal-setting skills. Ask questions like how can this apply to me? or do my goals use all of the SMART steps to goal-setting? When you finish this section, write a half to one page reflection about what you have learned and how you can use it in planning your education/career path.

SMART Goal Setting Guide Sheet Following are components of an effective goal one that describes performance standards that will tell us what good behavior looks like. The SMART acronym can help us remember these components. Specific The goal should identify a specific action or event that will take place. Measurable The goal and its benefits should be quantifiable. Achievable The goal should be attainable given available resources. Realistic The goal should require you to stretch some, but allow the likelihood of success. Timely The goal should state the time period in which it will be accomplished. Here are some tips that can help you set effective goals: 1. Develop several goals. A list of five to seven items gives you several things to work on over a period of time. 2. State goals as declarations of intention, not items on a wish list. "I want to apply to three schools" lacks power. "I will apply to three schools," is intentional and powerful. 3. Attach a date to each goal. State what you intend to accomplish and by when. A good list should include some short-term and some long-term goals. You may want a few goals for the year, and some for two- or three-month intervals. 4. Be specific. "To find a job" is too general; "to find and research five job openings before the end of the month" is better. Sometimes a more general goal can become the long-term aim, and you can identify some more specific goals to take you there. 5. Share your goals with someone who cares if you reach them. Sharing your intentions with your parents, your best friend, or your teacher will help ensure success. 6. Write down your goals and put them where you will see them. The more often you read your list, the more results you get. 7. Review and revise your list. Experiment with different ways of stating your goals. Goal setting improves with practice, so play around with it. Writing an Effective Goal Statement Rules for writing goal statements: 1. Use clear, specific language. 2. Start your goal statement with TO + a VERB 3. Write your goal statement using SMART Goal Criteria

4. Avoid using negative language. Think positive! An example of a goal statement: To run the mini marathon in May and complete the 10 mile race in under 1 hour to beat my personal best time. Notice how the above example begins with the word To, includes the verb run, and tells what (the marathon), why (to beat personal best time) and when (May). Activity Use this worksheet to identify the specific SMART criteria you will use to write your goal statement. What is your basic goal? 1. Is it specific? (Who? What? Where? When? Why?) S 2. Is it measurable? How will I measure progress? (How many? How much?) M 3. Is it attainable? (Can this really happen? Attainable with enough effort? What steps are involved?) A 4. Is it realistic? (What knowledge s, skills, and abilities are necessary to reach this goal?) R 5. Is it time- bound? (Can I set fixed deadlines? What are the deadlines?) T My Goal Statement Use the SMART worksheet you just completed and the rules above for writing a goal statement. This should be a work- related goal that you would like to achieve in 12 months or less. Repeat this exercise as needed to write other goal statements.

NOW write a half to one page reflection about what you have learned and how you can use it in planning your education/career path. You may also want to make a list or diagram to help you with organizing your ideas. Now that you are finished part 1, create a stamp for SMART goal-setting in your passport

Part 2: Corporate Goal-Setting Exercise -Lululemon This goal-setting exercise for Lululemon employees breaks goals down into three major areas of life: Health (fitting with Lululemon s business plan), personal life and career. This goal-setting exercise is also future focused and asks you to think about yourself and your life in 10 years time. Looking forward to the future and imagining what you want for yourself is a good way to start planning. If you can get a vision of what you want in the future, you can start making a plan on how to get it. As you work through this section, try to think of yourself in the future and what you really want for yourself. When you finish this section, write a half to one page reflection about what you have learned and how you can use it in planning your education/career path.

It is what you want for you

MY VISION

GOAL WORKSHEET Congratulations on writing your vision! Now it s time to pull some 10-year goals from that vision and trickle them back. Choose a 10 year goal in either personal, career or health and plug it into this worksheet. YOUR GOALS: DOMAIN (eg. personal) EXAMPLE: I own a leadership retreat on 60 acres of land by November 2022 trickle back- start with the end in mind. Set 10-year goals first, then move backwards to 5 years and then 1 year use affirmative language. State what you want, not what you don t want are in the present tense: I am. I have. I create. are measurable (I visit three retreat centres by December 2013) so that you can check them off have a deadline - decide by when your goal will be complete, this helps to get you into action to get to my 10-year goal I will... EXAMPLE: I own 60 acres of land on Vancouver Island by September 2017 Choose one 10-year goal that is apparent from your work discovering your vision and place it into the worksheet below. Then repeat for all domains (personal, career and health) to complete the first draft of your goals! what I need to do in 1 year to get to my 5-year goal EXAMPLE: I visit three different retreat centres by September 2013

YOUR VISION & GOALS Rewrite your vision here remember that it doesn t have to look the same as the first time you wrote it. Fill in your goals, working back from 10 years to 1 year in the future. Post this sheet up where you can see it every day. Have it influence your choices. Remember you can change ANYTHING in your vision & goals ANY TIME you want. PERSONAL HEALTH CAREER

NOW WHAT? The practice of setting your vision & goals is just that: a practice. You will find that your vision expands as you practice the art of removing perceived constraints truly want. Your goals will become more courageous and scary-exciting. By simply focusing on what you want, you will be aware of opportunities around you that help you achieve your goals. NEXT STEPS CHECKLIST: Print out the worksheet package and do all the exercises again see what remains the same Print out your vision & goals and post them in a place you frequent daily so that you read them and increase your connection to them. Share your vision & goals with your friends and family ask them to support you. When making a decision, ask yourself if your choice leads you closer to, or further away from your vision. Take a look at your 1-year goals. This is where ALL the action happens. What you could do Stay present to enjoying the journey along the way. Now that you are finished part 2, create a stamp for future-thinking goals in your passport

Part 3: Goal-Setting A Comprehensive Look This goal-setting exercise is from an organization called Stage of Life, which focuses on intrapersonal and interpersonal development. This goal-setting exercise is comprehensive and covers a wide range of areas in your life. As you work through this section, try to apply the SMART steps and future-thinking to the goals you write. Some sections like finance (step 3 on page 2) might be less relevant to you for example you might not have credit card debt, when you run into a section or example like this, think about how this could apply to you. For example, instead of talking about your investment portfolio (step 3, page 2), you can talk about what you are saving for school, a car or something else important. When you finish this section, write a half to one page reflection about what you have learned and how you can use it in planning your education/career path.

Stage of Life Goal Setting Setting goals is a healthy, positive habit no matter what stage of life you may be experiencing. This worksheet kit is a great place to start thinking proactively about your life and the things you d like to accomplish in the next year, but should really be used as a simple starting point from which to launch a larger conversation with both yourself and your loved ones about how to live a more fulfilling life. In the absence of clearly-defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily trivia until ultimately we become enslaved by it. Robert Heinlein (1907-1988) The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don't define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them. -- Denis Watley Instructions This 10 Step Goal Guide is simple. We recommend that you follow these steps as you complete the Goal Worksheet 1. Find a place to complete the goal activity where interruptions will be minimal 2. You may complete this by yourself or in tandem with a friend, family member, spouse, child or other loved one. We recommend that if you do the latter, you each complete the worksheets individually and then share afterwards. 3. Read and complete each of the 10 sections below. We encourage you to expand upon the goal categories listed below what we ve provided is by no means an allinclusive list to approaching your own goals. This is a simple tool, and remember that you are the guide to your own life. Take control and enjoy it! 4. When you are finished, use the Summary Worksheet to copy your key goals from each section and then hang/post on your refrigerator, office door, bathroom mirror or other prominent place where you ll see them everyday. Let s begin! Product of Stage of Life www.stageoflife.com

For instance maybe you want to set up a Family Game Night in which you all sit down at the table to play a game no TV no distractions just family fun.
