Introduction My mother was Dorothy Irene Klinger. Her parents were Edwin (Ed) Charles Klinger and Irene Mary Wrightstone. 1 Ed s father was Charles Edwin Klinger (Jr.), the oldest child born to Charles Edwin Klinger (Sr.) and Malinda Jane Daniels. Charles E. Klinger Sr. was the 6 th child born to John A. Klinger and Susanna Romberger. 2 John A. Klinger s parents were Johann Peter Klinger and Catherine Steinbruch. Peter s 3 family line belongs to Johann Phillip Klinger, whose family line can be traced back to his 16 th century ancestral roots in the regions of Rielingshausen and Wuertenburg Germany. 4 Charles Edwin Klinger Sr. (1853 1916) Charles Edwin Klinger Sr. 5 was born April 1854 6 to John A. Klinger and Susanna Romberger in the area of Gratz located in Lykens Township Dauphin County Pennsylvania. During this time the town of Gratz was the largest town in the remote northern tip of Dauphin County. When Charles was six years old his family were living in the Millersburg area of Upper Paxtang Township, Dauphin County; a small town bordering the Susquehanna River. Charles s father was a miller for the local grain mill. By 1870 the family moved to Lykens in Washington Township, bordering Mifflin Township near Berrysburg Dauphin County Pennsylvania. While in the Lykens and Berrysburg area in 1873, 21 old Charles married 20 year old Malinda Jane Daniels. 7 The Daniels family lived very close to Charles s family in Washington and Mifflin township borders, not far from Berrysburg. It is these areas were Charles and Malinda started their family. Malinda Jane Daniels 8 was born July 15 th 1851 to Bennevell (Benjamin) F. Daniels and Mary M. Adams in Lykens, 9 Dauphin County Pennsylvania. Her parents were born in Pennsylvania; most likely in and around this same northern area of Dauphin County. Since as early as 1850, John s father worked in the milling trade, and as a farmer and farm laborer trades. Charles Sr. would follow as a laborer in these same trades, even briefly unemployed in 1880 as a coal miner. The family made their livelihood in and around the townships and towns that surrounded their family s roots. Charles and Malinda lived in Lykens Borough area of Lykens Township Northern Dauphin County with their children Charles Jr., Ida Pearl, and William Elmer. The largest coal company in Lykens area of Wiconisco Township was the Lykens Valley Coal Company. Charles and Malinda had eight children. 10 i. Charles Edwin Klinger Jr. (1874-1927) ii. Ida Pearl Klinger (1876-1938) iii. William Elmer Klinger (1878 1944) iv. Albert J. Klinger (1883 1970) v. Harry Victor Klinger (1886 1958) vi. James Franklin Klinger (1889 1965) vii. Unknown, died prior to 1900 viii. Unknown, died prior to 1900

Shortly after 1880, Charles moved his family to Philadelphia, where their son Albert was born in 1883. By 1885 the family moved to Harrisburg Pennsylvania, where in February 1886 their son Harry would be born. Charles s brother, John W. Klinger, was already in Harrisburg by 1877, and may have been the first Klinger from my mother s line to live in the city. No other Klinger was listed in the Harrisburg directories until Charles Sr. arrived in late 1885. By 1886 Charles Sr. and his brother Jonas appeared in the Harrisburg directory. John W. Klinger suddenly drops off, and a Mary Klinger starts being listed, but I m not sure who she is. The name, Jonas, also disappear in 1887, and a Mary continues to be listed. Mary may be a wife of John or Jonas. These would be different times for Charles and Malinda. For a few years they lived at 7 Lochiel Street, so named for the Lochiel Iron Works 11 located south of Harrisburg, just across the Steelton Borough line. 12 From 1892 to 1894 Charles Sr. s family lived at 819 South Front Street Harrisburg, and he was still listed as a laborer. In 1893 Charles Jr. begins to be listed with his father, both as laborers. Charles Sr. is listed, and his son was listed as a (Jr.). 13 From 1895 to 1900 the Harrisburg directory listed a Charles E. Klinger and Sons, Charles Jr., Ida P., and William E. Klinger living at 124 Hanna Street Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Both father and son were listed as grocers at 126 Hanna Street, and William E. was listed as a driver. Charles and his son Charles Jr. had a small grocer at 126 Hanna Street in Harrisburg, which was next door to their home at 124 Hanna Street. The homes located at 124 and 126 Hanna Street is in present day Shipoke of South Harrisburg Pennsylvania. In 1960 homes in the Shipoke area were demolished for the Interstate 83 2 nd and front street ramps. The homes of 124 and 126 Hanna Street were demolished, and would have been located near the railroad tracks Living with Charles and Malinda in 1900 were Charles Jr., his wife Emma and their six year old daughter Ethel. Also living with Charles Sr. and Malinda were their sons Albert, Harry, and James, who were listed as attending school. Both Charles Sr. and Jr. worked with fruits and produce, listed in a census record as a green grocer. The family lived on Hanna Street until about 1904, when Charles Jr. began working as a confectioner and living away from his parents. Charles Sr. began working as a laborer for a local Iron Company. By 1910 Charles was in Los Angeles California living in a boarding home, while he continued to work as an iron worker. Malinda was living with Albert and his family. In the 1910 census Malinda identified herself as a widow. I m not certain why Charles and Malinda were not living together. In 1912 Charles Sr. was back in Harrisburg working as a salesman, and he continued to not live with Malinda. Malinda and her youngest children had moved in with her son Albert J. Klinger and his new wife at 403 Vernon Street Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Malinda lived with Albert to about 1916, when she moved in with another son Harry and his wife. Charles Klinger Sr. died November 14 th 1916, 14 and was laid to rest in the Paxtang Cemetery, Plot: Hillside Lawn SG, Dauphin County Pennsylvania.

Malinda continued to live with Harry at both Brook Street and Swatara Streets until about 1936. At this time she moved in with another son William. (It was in William s WWI draft registration that he referred to Malinda as Linda.) Malinda lived with William and his wife at 414 Buckhorn St. Harrisburg from 1936 to 1941. William died in 1944. Malinda died in Middletown Dauphin County Pennsylvania of acute pulmonary edema, due to myocardial degeneration, on August 10 th 1941 15 at 90 years old. 16 She is laid to rest at the Paxtang Cemetery, Plot: Terrace Lawn #34, Paxtang, Dauphin County Pennsylvania. 17 Most of the children lived on Allison Hill area of Harrisburg Pennsylvania: South of Derry Street and North of Berryhill Street, between Crescent and 17 th Streets of Harrisburg. Known addresses include: Crescent Street, Nectarine Street, Swatara Street, Brook Street, Berryhill Street, and Buckhorn Street. Ida Pearl Klinger (1876 1938) Ida Pearl 18 Klinger was born May 2 nd 1876 to Charles Klinger Sr. and Malinda Daniels in Lykens Dauphin County Pennsylvania. She married Harry Kaufman April 14 th 1896 in Camden, Camden County New Jersey. 19 Harry was born June 4 th 1875. 20 In 1900 Ida and Harry Kauffman lived with their son Howard, and Ida s brother William Klinger, at 32 Race Street, which is located in South Harrisburg, present day Shipoke area. Harry worked for the Pike and Pike Bonding Mill located at 11 th and Herr Street Harrisburg. In 1918 the Kaufman family lived at 232 North 15 th Street Harrisburg. In 1910 Harry was a newsagent for the depot, and in 1920 Harry is not living with the family. In 1930 Ida s brother William Klinger is back living with them, and his marriage status is as a widower. Ida and Harry had five children. i. Howard Kaufman was born March 1898 ii. Ester Mae Kaufman was born about 1900 iii. Harry Edward Kaufman was born about 1903 iv. Ada F. Kaufman was born 1906. She married Joseph D. Coleman about 1927. By 1940 Ada and Joseph had a 2 year old son, James G. Coleman was born June 3 rd 1937. Ada died in 1983, and Joseph in 1986. Their son James died April 27 th 2010. Ada, Joseph, and their son James and his wife were all laid to rest in the Hummelstown Cemetery, Railroad & Lincoln St., Hummelstown Dauphin County Pennsylvania. 21 v. Alice M. Kaufman was born June 1910. At 23 years old Alice married 23 year old George R. Mumper on August 4 th 1933 in Lebanon County Pennsylvania. George was born in 1910 to Samuel Mumper and Harriett Nixon. 22 By 1940 their daughter, Patricia A. Kaufman was six months old, born about November 1939. Ida died July 17 th 1937 while living in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. 23 In the 1940 census record her husband lived with his two daughters, Ada Coleman and Alice Mumper, along with their husbands and children.

William Elmer Klinger (1878 1944) William Elmer Klinger was born January 12 th 1879 to Charles Klinger Sr. and Malinda Daniels in Lykens, Wiconisco Township Dauphin County Pennsylvania. William s baptismal record indicated that William E. in the son of Charles and Malinda Klinger. The sponsor was his grandmother Susannah Klinger. 24 William came to Harrisburg with his parents when he was about 10 years old. In 1900 William lived with his sister Ida Pearl Klinger-Kaufman on Race street Harrisburg Pennsylvania. At the time he was working as a day laborer. In 1905 William married Serilda House. 25 Serilda was born in Newport Perry County Pennsylvania about 1889. By 1910 William and Serilda lived across the river from Harrisburg in New Market, Fairview Township York County Pennsylvania. New Market is a small town south of New Cumberland, just outside the Army Supply Depot. The depot started construction in 1917, and later was known as the New Cumberland Army Depot and Defense Distribution Center. William was working in the boiler shop, most likely for the Army Depot. In 1920 William lived with a Miller family in Harrisburg, and he was now a widower working as a laborer for a printing shop. His son Glen R. is living with his brother Harry, and his daughter Elizabeth cannot be located. In 1930 William is back living with his sister Ida P. Klinger-Kaufman. He is still a widower, and works as a laborer at the Pennsylvania Light and Power Company. His son Glen R. Klinger still lives with his brother Harry in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Serilda must have died between 1910 and 1920. William and Serilda had three children: 26 i. Glen R. Klinger was born about 1906. In 1930 Glen lived with his Uncle, Harry Victor Klinger, and grandmother Malinda Klinger. ii. Elizabeth May Klinger was born about 1908. When Elizabeth was 17 years old she married 19 year old William J. Arnold February 26 th 1925 in Liverpool Perry County Pennsylvania. William was born in 1906 to Jacob Arnold and Anna Bell Jones. 27 iii. Anna Zimmerman Klinger was born 1911. She may be a daughter of Serilda House s 1 st marriage. When Anna was 18 years old she married 27 year old Luther L. Black March 21 st 1929 in Dauphin County Pennsylvania. Luther was born 1902 to Ike P. Black and Lula Ring. 28 By 1918 William was still living with his brother Charles Jr. at 108 South Court street. He worked as a pipe fitters helper for Rocco Bennett of Harrisburg. William identified Linda Klinger of 1917 and Derry Street Harrisburg as the person who could be contacted for any of William s address changes. This Linda is in reference to his mother Malinda, who in 1918 and 1920 lived with her son Harry at 341 Brook Street. 29 On April 27 th 1942 when William was 63 years old, he stood 5-8 tall weighing 145 pounds with blue eyes and black hair. He lived at 414 Buckthorn Street Harrisburg Dauphin County Pennsylvania. Buckhorn is off Derry Street between South 13 th and South 14 th Street. William s mother Malinda also lived with William during this time.

On William s WWI Draft Registration card, he listed his brother James Klinger as the person who will always know his address. William also listed his brother, James s, address as Dunkle Street, near a substation in Harrisburg. Dunkle Street is connected directly to Derry Street between South 19 th and 20 th Street Harrisburg PA. In 1942 William worked for the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company. 30 This information helps correlate to James s WWII Registration Card. Between 1941 and 1944 William lived with his mother Malinda at 414 Buckhorn Street Harrisburg Pennsylvania. 31 William died in 1944, and he is buried at Paxtang Cemetery. 32 Malinda lived with William at the time that he died, and where Malinda later resided has not been uncovered. By 1920 his family moved to 341 Brook Street Harrisburg Pennsylvania, just off Derry Street. 42 When Harry s brother William registered for the WWI draft, he identified Linda Klinger as a reference. This would be the reference to his mother, Malinda, who in 1918 and 1920 lived with her son Harry. On Harry s April 27 th 1942 WWII Draft Registration card he was 56 years old, and stood 5 10 tall weighing 191 pounds with brown eyes and grey hair. Harry lived at 331 Nectarine Street Harrisburg PA.
