GOAL SETTING FOR DANCERS Presented by Ballet Strength

Introduction - The Importance of Goal Setting Have you ever heard the saying, fail to plan, plan to fail before? When it comes to reaching goals, planning is a must do. You have the power to reach your goals. Goal setting ensures that you stay on track and do not stray from your plan and the thing that you desire most. There are many different components that go into goal planning and it takes time and careful thought. In this worksheet we will set your plan in action. Identifying Strengths & Weaknesses Effective goal setting starts by identifying your strengths and weaknesses. Grab a pencil and paper to fill out the next section. 5 things that are good about my dancing: The reasons that I am good at the above things: 5 things that need to improve about my dancing: What I can do to improve the above things:

Setting Your Goals Now you are ready to start setting some goals. Print & fill out the worksheet below. Be sure to take your time! Step 1: List 3 Goals - Write down 3 goals that you would like to accomplish. If appropriate, specify a deadline by which you would like to accomplish these goals. (example: acceptance into SAB, triple pirouettes en pointe, you get the picture.) Goal #1 Deadline: Goal #2 Deadline: Goal #3 Deadline: Step 2: Reasons/Benefits of Goals - Write down the reasons that you want to make these changes. What benefits will you realize from these goals? How will this make your dancing better? (example: learning from new teachers, advancing to a higher level, etc.) Benefits for Goal #1 Benefits for Goal #2 Benefits for Goal # 3

Setting Your Goals (continued) Step 3: Identifying Obstacles -If it were easy for you to achieve the goals you identified, you would have already done it. Almost always, there are barriers in the way. In the space below, identify some of the obstacles you may encounter on the way to your goal. (example: getting injured, lack of support, etc.) Obstacle for Goal #1 Obstacle for Goal #2 Obstacle for Goal # 3 Step 4: Strategy - Now that you have identified the obstacles, you must strategize a way to overcome these barriers. In the spaces below, write down strategies that include your plan of attack. (example: cross training to stay injury free, communicating with my parents, etc.) Strategy for Goal #1 Strategy for Goal #2 Strategy for Goal # 3

Setting Your Goals (continued) Step 5: Support System -Your support system is essential to attaining your goals. Getting support from your friend, family, and associates is essential to helping you stay focused and disciplined. List your support system for each goal. (example: mom, boyfriend, private coach) Support for Goal #1 Support for Goal #2 Support for Goal # 3 Step 6: Reward - How will you reward yourself when you achieve your goal? Type of rewards include a dinner out at your favorite restaurant, a shopping trip, you get the picture... Reward for Goal #1 Reward for Goal #2 Reward for Goal # 3

Conclusion I think you will agree that you have learned quite a bit about yourself through the goal setting process. I recommend getting a journal and keeping track of your daily corrections, improvements, and obstacles that may arise during the process. Most importantly, love yourself for the dancer that you are. Don t let outside factors or negative self talk change your positive mindset or get you off your game. Remember to focus on being the best version of yourself, not someone else, and you will go very far in dance and in life. Committed to Your Dancing, Nikol Klein Take10% off your order!
