Curse and Examinatin Regulatins valid as f 1 September 2015 Prgramme-specific sectin: Master s Prgramme: Asian Studies (60 EC) These curse and examinatin regulatins have been drawn up in accrdance with Sectin 7.13 f the Higher Educatin and Research Act [Wet p het hger nderwijs en wetenschappelijk nderzek] (WHW) (hencefrth the Act) and additinal quality marks as set ut in the framewrk dcument Leiden University Register f Study Prgrammes [Leids universitair register pleidingen]. Pursuant t Sectin 7.14 f the Act the Faculty Bard regularly evaluates the curse and examinatin regulatins and assesses, fr the purpse f mnitring and, if necessary, adjusting the study lad, the time it takes students t cmply with the regulatins. In cnfrmity with Sectin 9.18 f the Act, the department teaching cmmittee is assigned the task f annually assessing hw the curse and examinatin regulatins are implemented. These curse and examinatin regulatins cnsist f tw sectins: a general sectin that is the same fr all prgrammes and a sectin that cntains infrmatin that is specific t a particular prgramme. Article 2.1 Objectives f the Prgramme The prgramme has the fllwing bjectives: 1. t enable students t acquire academic knwledge, understanding and skills, and train them in the use f scientific methds in the field f Asian Studies; 2. t enable students t develp the fllwing academic and prfessinal skills: - independent academic reasning and cnduct, - the ability t analyse cmplex prblems, - academic reprting; 3. t prepare students fr an academic career and further educatin; 4. t prepare students fr a career utside academia. Article 2.2 Specialisatins The prgramme has the fllwing specialisatins: - East Asian Studies - Histry, Arts and Culture f Asia - Plitics, Sciety and Ecnmy f Asia - Suth Asian Studies - Sutheast Asian Studies Article 2.3 Achievement Levels Graduates f the prgrammes will have reached the fllwing achievement levels: 1. Knwledge and understanding a. fundatinal knwledge f the histry and develpment f Asian studies; b. knwledge f research in scial sciences and humanities disciplines that is grunded in Asian studies; c. understanding f the cncepts, terminlgy and appraches relevant t the reginal and disciplinary specialisatin f the student, and their applicatin in riginal research; d. understanding f aspects and/r cuntries in Asia in the cntext f Asia as a whle. 2. Applying knwledge and understanding a. knwledge f the main humanities and scial science research methds and techniques and their applicatin in Asian studies; b. skills in lcating, retrieving, assessing and using surces and specialist secndary literature fr the purpses f riginal research; c. the ability t independently design, cnduct and cmplete riginal research n an aspect f Asian studies. 3. Judgement a. the ability t frm a judgement n the basis f incmplete r limited infrmatin, whilst als taking int accunt the scial and ethical respnsibilities that cme with the applicatin f knwledge and assessments. 2

Cmmunicatin a. the ability t interpret and cmment n aspects and/r cuntries f East, Suth r Sutheast Asia fr specialist and nn-specialist audiences, and t act as cultural intermediary; b. the ability t reprt, debate and discuss in a prfessinal setting, bth rally and in writing. 5.
