BWH is recognized as leader in both patient care and research, with expertise in virtually every specialty of medicine and surgery, and research spanning from basic, to clinical and translational. The BWH medical preeminence dates back to 1832, and today that rich history in clinical care is coupled with its national leadership in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives and its dedication to educating and training the next generation of health care professionals. The Director of Development will support the work of Ariadne Labs, a unique collaboration between Brigham and Women s Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health SEARCHES BRIGHAM AND WOMEN S HOSPITAL BACKGROUNDER 1

(Harvard Chan) founded by BWH surgeon and best-selling author Atul Gawande, M.D., M.P.H. and launched in October 2012 with an ambitious goal: to produce research and discovery that actually makes healthcare better everywhere. Ariadne Labs empowers researchers to foster the sharing and development of cutting edge ideas and real-time results. Its goal is to aid practitioners in managing the complexity of increasing specialization and technology to consistently provide effective, humane and affordable care for all. To date, Ariadne Labs has raised more than fifty million dollars through individual and foundation philanthropy, allowing it to grow to more than sixty people and create solutions for better care at some of the most critical moments in people s lives. The Labs work is already having global impact: Tens of millions of patients yearly undergo operations performed by teams using the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist, the development of which was led by Ariadne Labs founder Atul Gawande. The Checklist, adopted in 2008 as the global standard of care, has been proven to reduce deaths 18-47% around the world. Ariadne Labs s BetterBirth Program, designed to reduce deaths in childbirth in low-income countries, is now reaching tens of thousands of women and children in a trial that will involve over 120 rural health centers in India. Ariadne Lab s Serious Illness Care Program to support clinicians and patients with serious illness in effectively talking about their goals and priorities is in its testing phase and demonstrating that these conversations can happen more, better, and earlier to improve quality of life and reduce non-beneficial care and costs. The DOD will have the opportunity to work closely with Atul Gawande, M.D., M.P.H. in his role as executive director of Ariadne Labs. Dr. Gawande s research and leadership focuses on the generation of systems innovations to transform safety and quality in health care. He has been a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine since 1998 and has written four bestselling books, won two National Magazine awards, and was a finalist for the National Book Award. His newest book, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End, has been on The New York Times best seller list since its publication in October 2014, and was ranked at #1 for two months. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who is entrepreneurial and a self-starter, mission-driven and enjoys a fast-paced team-based environment. This person will want to grow the development program from its start-up phase to the next level and will be eager to function at multiple levels by providing critical strategic, analytical and relationship management guidance across Ariadne Labs, BWH and Harvard Chan.
