Getting Started: Requirements & Tips 1 2 Put a Phillips head bit (Size: PH2) on a power drill. Ensure your bit fits nicely into the screws. We have provided one if you don t have one. 3 Assemble the hutch on flat ground and move into position once completed, then attach the run. 4 Save Yourself Some Stress UNPACK ALL THE BOXES COMPLETELY and line up all the bags of hardware in order so you can easily grab the bolts and screws during assembly. 6 You will need to paint your chicken coop and make sure you repaint every 3 years to keep it in top condition. Some locations in Australia may require more regular coats due to the harsh environment. You must paint both sides of every panel and we recommend you do this PRIOR TO ASSEMBLY for the best finish. We recommend Dulux Weathershield Exterior Paint. If you have chosen to oil your coop you must use Intergrain Ultradeck Natural colour. No other oil gives the necessary finish. Re-coat annually. Need some help? Allow yourself around 2 hours so you don t rush and make mistakes. 5 Assembling the coop is a 2-person job, Each piece of the coop is not heavy, and is easily supported by one person, but the coop s overall size means you ll need an extra pair of hands! M R U EA ST D! 7 Each piece has a corresponding number, as shown in the instructions. The number is printed somewhere on the piece itself. M R U EA ST D! Getting Started: Requirements & Tips 8 When screwing the pieces together, it s easier if someone is applying pressure to the panels. Remember, it is best to screw them in slowly and steadily. 10 If you find you have leftover hardware, don t worry! There are spares for backups. 12 You may find a step ladder handy for attaching the roof. Need some help? 9 A good tactic when working in pairs is for one person to go ahead and rest the screws in the pre-drilled holes so that the other person can quickly and easily drill them in later. 11 Many hands make light work! If you re having trouble fitting some pieces together, try swapping and changing the pieces about a few jiggles and flips and you ll find they fit! 13 Please make sure you login to your online customer portal at www.backyardchickencoops.com.au/customer-portal. StEp 1 StEp 2 34 Let s start with assembling the chimney. Piece 5 slots alongside Piece 7 on your right hand side, with Piece 4 slotting in on your left hand side. Assemble pieces together using the D screws (x4) into the pre-drilled holes provided. Lie Piece 3 down on the ground, with the window handle side facing down. Attach what you made in Step 1 to the top of the piece to form all sides of the chimney. Screw D screws into the holes provided on each side of the chimney. Make sure you orientate the panels correctly! 6
StEp 3 StEp 4 1/4 of the way! Slot Piece 1 onto your right hand side of Piece 3. Slot Piece 2 onto your left hand side of Piece 3. With your screwdriver drill 2 L bolts on each side, as shown in the diagram (one up the top, one near the base). Ensure piece 1 & 2 is positioned so the corner that has a notch cut out is aligned like the diagram. The chimney can now be attached to the wall of the hutch piece 17. Attach Piece 17 (it s a pentagon shape with a large square cut out don t confuse it with Piece 19!) to your chimney structure as seen in the diagram, using 4 I bolts two on either side. c c Remember to watch the assembly video in your online customer portal! Fit piece 10 at the base of your chimney there is a gap which it simply slots into. Attach with a C screw (x2) on each side. 7
StEp 5 StEp 6 You will see there are now two gaps on either side of the chimney. This is where pieces 8 & 9 will fit to form a small roof. Place piece 8 on your right hand side of the chimney, and piece 9 on your left hand side. Screw 2 D screws in on each piece as shown in the diagram. You may have to turn the pieces and wiggle them around a bit until you find the right configuration then they will slot in nicely. See video. It s time to finish the chimney! Fit piece 6 (the chimney cap) on top of the chimney, wiggling it around until it slides down. Using D screws, screw two in on either side as shown in the diagram. Voila! That s one section complete It s time to build the nesting boxes! Stand Piece 13, the back of the nesting box, vertically so it forms an L shape with Piece 14. Next attach Piece 11 to your left hand side of the nesting box, and Piece 12 attaches to your right hand side. With the top of Piece 11 & 12, make sure the slope of the wood is going upwards, not downwards. Screw J bolts in two on each side as shown in the diagram. 13 Tip: 16 (nesting box dividers) and pieces 35 (removable cleaning trays) are simply inserted into place. You might like to leave doing this until the end so they don t wobble around during the rest of assembly. 8
1/2 of StEp 7 the way! StEp 8 It s time to attach the nesting boxes to one side of the hutch. It s a good idea to rest the nesting box on its back, and then rest Piece 21 on top, ensuring the edge of the nesting boxes line up with the rectangular gap. Insert in K bolts two in on either side and tighten. Get ready to collect your fresh eggs from the nesting box! Tip: A 10mm spanner is helpful to hold the nuts whilst tightening the bolts. (If you don t have a 10mm spanner, then pliers will also do the trick). Begin this step with attaching piece 37 to piece 18 with C screws. Continue with attaching piece 19 to piece 20 using B screws. Attach piece 21 to piece 19 using B screws, forming a stable U shape. Attach piece 18 and screw in one side only. Attach piece 17 and screw in on the same side. Once fitted, screw in remaining screws. Attach the door handle (piece 34) to piece 18. Finally, attach Piece 21 to the inner side of Piece 18. 37 c 9
StEp 9 StEp 10 x 4pcs Put pieces 26 (x2) into the coop as seen in the diagram (they are small perches). Slide Piece 22 in the small gap underneath the chimney side as shown in the diagram. Piece 23 is the coop s handles. You will see there are two large holes where the dowels will slide in to attach it in place. Find all 3 perches, 27 and rest them in the slots provided, as shown in the diagram. Put Piece 15 on top of the nesting box (it s the lid). Screw 3 A screws on both sides as shown by the diagram. Before screwing in the hinges, check that the nesting box latch is lined up. Make sure the lid is able to open and close easily you don t want to screw it in so tightly that it won t open! Now is the perfect time to put in the nesting box trays and dividers (x2 piece 16 s and x3 piece 35 s.) They should each slot in and fit nicely. x 6pcs I sleep very soundly on a perch After the handles are in place, screw 2 C screws on each end and in the middle. The nesting box is complete! 10
StEp 11 StEp 12 3/4 of the way! It s time to attach the roof! Put roof piece 24 on top of the hutch, screwed with E screws. Be sure to apply lots of pressure for the best fit. Try swapping the pieces around and wiggling a bit if the roof doesn t fit well and refer to piece 24 s timber lugs on the underside to help align correctly - you might need a step ladder! It s also time to put the roof cap on. Grab Piece 25 (the roof cap) Screw in using F screws be careful not to counter sink the screw heads as that might cause harm to the caps. Tip: We suggest putting the ramps on now if the coop is in position or on last if you need to move the coop into place. It s time to build the run! When connecting the pieces, line up the dowel holes so the end can be connected. Screw the pieces together with B screws as shown in the diagram. Make sure to orientate pieces 29 and 30 as pictured. Piece 33 pieces are the perches for the run. Line them up with the spaces provided (someone might need to go inside the run to hold it in place) then screw from the outside with B screws as indicated in the diagram. Piece 34 is a small handle. Push the dowel pieces on the handle into the spaces provided on the coop door, then screw in with 2 B screws as shown in the diagram. *If you are wanting a smaller run area, you can detach one of the pieces on piece 29 and 30 (not the door!) 11
StEp 13 StEp 14 Final Step! It s time to put the roof on the run! Rest Piece 32 on top of your run structure, ensuring all the sides are lined up neatly. Then, screw in with B screws on either side as per the diagram. It s time to attach the run to the hutch how egg-citing! When lining up the run to the hutch, make sure all the sides are flush and that the run is fully pushed up against the hutch you don t want there to be any gaps! Attach the run to the hutch using G screws, as shown in the diagram. If you are not using the Automatic Door Opener, then thread the rope with piece 32 for the internal door up through the wire mesh and tie a knot at the desired height or simply use the locking bolt. Hoorah! The Run is done! Wowee, When can I move in? 12
