For the Home The Genus 215 Pondering what to do for his final year project, an idea struck Sam Graham, then a 20 year-old student of Product Design. My grandfather died when I was a child and my mum and aunty decided to have a memorial tree planted in a London park. His cremated ashes fed the soil and gave life to something enduring. My mum didn t want me to go to his funeral for fear it would be too upsetting, so the tree became very significant for me. Years later Sam s nan died and, again, the family chose to plant her ashes with a memorial tree. It was a beautiful setting, says Sam, and a special place to visit, but getting the family together and making the journey wasn t always easy and I felt I wanted more of a connection. That s when Sam hit upon the simple but clever idea of replicating the tree in the park; instead the tree was at home and the tree was portable. The bonsai urn was born. A small ring filled with some of the cremated ashes sits inside the soil of a bonsai tree inside a beautiful urn. Over time the ring biodegrades and the ashes feed the tree, once again creating new life from old.
