Aeronautics Related R&D Support and Activities in Sweden The Aerospace Industry - an integral part of Innovative Sweden Aerodays Vienna Hans Christer Olson Ministry of Industry, Employment and Communications

Swedish Governments strategy group May 2004: a working group is installed to develop a vision and strategy for the Swedish Aerospace Industry Representatives from the government, authorities and industry Addresses Aerospace issues in its context Jan 2005 Report presented start of implementation

The report The global situation The outlook for Sweden Key strategic questions A vision for the Swedish aerospace industry Strategies for realizing the vision Action plan Implementation of the action plan and future work

Vision Sweden s internationally competitive aerospace industry is one of the main driving forces for Sweden s growth and its position as a high-tech nation and the industry exploits synergies between civil and military applications in interaction with research and government

Swedish Aerospace industry is very competitive Growth potential 2.1 billion turnover per year Increasing export share High R&D-input - 15% or 0.3 billion per year The major industries are: Saab and Volvo Aero Ambition is to be an attractive partner - politically and industrially

contributes to society Capture potential spin-off results from aerospace R&D Venture Capital Council organizations within industry InnovationBridge: Government support forms for new business SwedCat: Co-operation Saab-Volvo-Ericsson on jointly developing new businesses from spin-off

Saab - Innovative Solutions for Future Aviation Aircraft optimization Development of optimized A/C configurations to achieve low cost operation Introduction of active flow and load control functions Advanced structural parts, metal and composite design production methods component integration Innovative and efficient system solutions High level system functions integration intelligence & autonomy Introduction and integration of All Electric Aircraft enablers Innovative approach to Utility Systems Air, Fuel & De-icing Systems Higher level of systems integration in future platforms Not merely improvement of current designs but new innovative solutions to save weight and cost, improve performance, reduce fuel burn and noise.

Key strategic questions How can an effective innovation system be further developed that is driven by market needs and new technological or scientific knowledge and gives the opportunity to further exploit Sweden s strong position in industry and research? How can the corporate sector and the government collaborate to develop international cooperation to ensure that Swedish industry has good competitive position in relation to other markets? How can full advantage be taken of the synergies between civil, military and space-related activities and what can be done to facilitate the technology to other sectors?

Action plan, to develop 1. a nationally integrated approach to the aerospace sector 2. the interaction between government, the industry and research 3. international cooperation and create a competitive environment 4. the capacity to deal with changes and security threats 5. the industrial structure at the national and regional levels 6. synergies between civil and military applications and between aviation and space activities

Way forward Thank You! Implementation of the action plan Focused Swedish efforts, e.g. in increased national programs, to support the industry in international collaboration. Increase the R&D performed by the Swedish partners within the planned Joint Technology Initiative Clean Sky Continued growth with focus on international collaboration
