Wireless challenges 25
Have you ever experienced? Even with one AP in each classroom, students struggled with slow download speeds You ve invested in new technology but you haven t seen the performance or improvement you expected. In an office environment, you ve come to expect that video conferences will often be interrupted In a high user density environment, adding new AP doesn t improve performance why? Do you worry about having to provide wireless at a conference for hundreds of users? 26

So what's the issue? To achieve faster speeds, greater channel widths are needed this in tern means less channels to use. We are then faced with Co-Channel interference. 29
What is Co-Channel Interference (CCI)? CCI is like two lanes merging on a motorway without knowing it's going to merge! Co-channel interference occurs between two access points (APs) that are on the same frequency channel. The reason why this should be considered when deploying Wi- Fi is that co-channel interference can severely affect the performance of your wireless LAN (WLAN) so much so that the effects can make the service unusable. 30
Traditional methods of dealing with Co-Channel Interference (CCI) Turn Down the Power? Traditional methods of dealing with Co-Channel Interference (CCI) issues, is to turn down the power. Unfortunately, this causes dead spots due to less coverage area and no overlap, along with giving lower throughputs. Also it doesn t completely remove the Co-Channel Interference (CCI) issues. CCI Coverage Area Interference Area 31
Smart Antenna Goals Increase capacity Reduce Interference Focus the transmission of the radio to achieve an increase in Capacity. By shaping the pattern away from Interference Interference rejection we are able reduce Interference. Increase Coverage Green solution Increase the signal gain allowing increased coverage. Power efficiency in the smart antenna means we are able to reduce the power consumption needed. 32

What is a Smart Antenna and how does it work? conventional Omni-directional antenna 90o directional antenna 34
Wi-Fi Client Smart Antenna Scans for clients and interference. Intelligent algorithm selects from over 700 optimized antenna patterns. This cycle takes less than 100ms. Optimal beam combination is shaped for each client (station). Adjacent / Co channel or Non Wi-Fi Interference 3535
Smart Antenna The cycle is repeated if necessary to dynamically shape different patterns in response to changing environments. For example: client (station) moves or interference is detected. 36

Zyxel s Smart Antenna achieves an average gain of 56% better coverage by delivering more throughput than non-smart antenna when compared with the Cisco Access Points in 5GHz. The Zyxel Smart Antenna also has a average gain of 66% over Ruckus in the 2.4GHz band. In the co-channel Interference test Zyxel Smart Antenna shows an average gain of 45% on total aggregated throughput against the competing smart Antenna Access Point (Ruckus).. 44

Wireless Client (stations) Interaction
Client (stations) Interaction with Wi-Fi Which Band to select (2.4GHz / 5GHz) When to roam from one AP to another and is traditionally at the discretion of the station This is normally based on strongest signal and as 2.4GHz generally is stronger than 5GHz then is selected even though it may not be more reliable. Most devices will not actively seek for a better connection and will wait until the signal is at the max tolerance e.g. 90dBm (unstable by most devices). This is often referred to as sticky AP even though its generally the Station sticking to the AP. 52
Signal Threshold Station Management
Station Management (signal threshold) Bad Signal Poor Signal Good Signal 54
Station Management (signal threshold) Good Signal Good Signal Good Signal 55
Station Management (signal threshold) Config. Object AP Profile Radio Select Profile. Set a minimum client signal strength. A wireless client is allowed to connect to the AP only when its signal strength is stronger than the specified threshold. -20 dbm is the strongest signal -76 dbm is the weakest signal Set a minimum signal strength to disconnect a station. When a wireless client s signal strength is lower than the specified threshold, the AP disconnects the wireless client (station). -20 dbm is the strongest signal -90 dbm is the weakest signal VoIP over wireless requires lower tolerances than other types of traffic like browsing the internet and it s recommended that the stations connectivity is kept between -60dBm / -65dBm to avoid call quality issues. 56
Band Select Station Management
Response to strong client connection request 2.4GHz and 5GHz connection requests are made b/g/n 2.4GHz a/b/g/n/ ac 2.4/5GHz 58
Station Management (Band Select) Config. Object AP Profile SSID Select Profile. Standard responds on 5GHz only for a number of attempts before allowing the client to connect on 2.4GHz Disabled allows the connection on either band the client dictates this Force will only respond on 5GHz and will deny any request on 2.4GHz regardless, even if the device only supports 2.4GHz. This rule is Explicit meaning that all devices have to support 5GHz 59
