Life-size Wall Hanger Bust of Lon Chaney Jr. as The Wolf Man, Sculpted by Jeff Yagher and produced by Black Heart Enterprises. COLORS Woods & Water Acrylic Airbrush Color from Badger Air-Brush Co. I picked (4) existing colors from the color chart and mixed (2) others each in an empty squeeze bottle. #1-202 Detail White #2 - Mix (2/3) 202 Detail White + (1/3) 205 Gray #3 - Mix (2/3) 205 Gray + (1/3) 202 Detail White #4-205 Gray #5-243 Dark Gray #6-244 Detail Black BRUSHES #12 Shader #8 Shader #5 Round #3 Round 5/0 Detail 0 Detail DecoArt Triple Thick Testor s Dull Coat After cleaning and prepping the piece, I sprayed it with Duplicolor Gray Primer Sealer. This gray color primer is a great base coat color for doing grayscale paint-ups. Airbrush random squiggles over the nose, cheeks, lip and around the eyes with paint mix #2. Airbrush a light base coat over the eyeballs and teeth with #2. Airbrush the highlight areas on the ears with #2. Airbrush random squiggles over the nose, cheeks, lip and around the eyes with paint mix #3.
Add blotchy washes around the eyes, nose, ears with #12 Shader Brush and 243 Dark Gray thinned with water. With a #12 Shader Brush wash over the fur areas using 243 Dark Gray plus a couple drops of 273 extender base and water. Blot off paint over the raised areas of the fur with a crumpled up paper towel. With a #8 Shader Brush wash over the fur areas using 244 Detail Black plus a couple drops of 273 extender base and water. Blot off paint over the raised areas of the fur with a crumpled up paper towel. Darken in deep crevices in the fur with washes of 244 Detail Black.
Add light washes around the eyes, nose and forehead with #8 Shader Brush and 243 Dark Gray thinned with water. EYES Rough in the position of the irises and pupils with black water color. Once happy with the position of the eyes, fix the water color with a light mist of Testor s Dull Coat. Fill in the irises with a base coat of 205 Gray, then add striations in the irises with paint mix #3. Wash the edges of the irises and then add more striations with 205 Gray.
SHIRT Hand brush a base coat over the shirt with 243 Dark Gray Airbrush the shadow areas of the shirt with 244 Detail Black thinned down with water and 273 extender base. Airbrush the high light areas of the shirt with 243 Dark Gray thinned down with water and 273 extender base. Lightly mist over the shirt with the thinned 243 Dark Gray to help blend in the shadow areas of the shirt. MOUTH & NOSE Base coat the gums with 243 Dark Gray, then wash them with 205 Gray. With a #3 Round brush - base coat the teeth with a few coats of paint mix #2. Add more coats to the tips and highlight areas of the teeth. With a #3 Round brush, add a couple more light coats to the tips and highlight areas of the teeth with 202 Detail White. Wash the teeth around the gum line with 243 Dark Gray. Base coat the nose with a stipple wash of 243 Dark Gray. Then apply a blotchy wash to the nose with 205 Gray, and paint in the nostrils with 244 Detail Black.
With a #5 Round brush and paint mix #3, hit the raised areas of the fur by lightly swiping across them with a downward angle. Repeat the previous step with paint mix #2, but this time randomly hit small hairs to make them appear that they are catching the light. CHALK PASTELS Chalk Pastels are a great way to deepen shadow areas and punch highlight areas. Alphacolor has a great Grayscale set of 12 Soft Chalk Pastels. With a clean dry #3 Round brush, swipe down the length of a pastel. Then apply by lightly swirling the brush in a circular motion. Build them up slowly until you are happy with the results, then seal them permanently with Testor s Dull Coat. FINAL SEAL & GLOSS Time to seal the entire bust with a couple of light coats of Testor s Dull Coat. Gloss the eyes using DecoArt Triple Thick, apply a light coat over each eyeball. Once it has dried, apply a second coat over just the irises and pupils. Repeat a couple more times to build up a bit of a cornea. Gloss the teeth and gums with Triple Thick. Apply a couple of coats to the teeth to give them the look of enamel. Be sure to allow the gloss to dry between coats!
