Bardel Van Donge and Ethel Cumins were married in Oregon City, Ore, June 20, 1906 and lived in or around Portland until 1908, when they moved to Nolan, Ore. Here they settled on a homestead, which they developed into a 1,200 acre wheat ranch. In 1923, the couple moved to Cove, Ore., tp a wheat and cattle ranch, which they operated for 10 years, moving to Walla Walla in 1931. The Van Donges' ranch on Powerline Road was well-known for many years for its fine strawberries and other produce. In 1945, they moved to town, turning the farming operations over to their sons, Millerd and Bardel Jr., to enjoy life of a bit more leisurely pace. Mr. and Mrs. Van Donge had four children, three of whom are living: Mrs. Jack (Marjorie) Seagraves of Tacoma; Miller, and Bardel Jr., of Walla Walla. Dean Van Donge, the fourth, died in WWII. She became a licensed practical nurse and moved to California, where she would later earn registered nurse status. She put down roots in the San Francisco Bay Area and continued her participation in the peace movement, making many lifelong friends along the way. She later moved to Willits and served her community working as a nurse at Howard Memorial Hospital. She became an active member of the community, participating in the Willits Community Theater and the Willits Environmental Center. She tirelessly championed a wide range of causes promoting social and environmental justice. Her intrepid spirit carried her across the globe, often to some of the most underdeveloped areas of the world. She volunteered her nursing skills for relief efforts in Israel, Palestine and Egypt as well as Central America. A woman of steadfast integrity and deep compassion she leaves behind a vast circle of friends and colleagues who will miss her dearly. She is survived by son Niels Kirk of Willits; stepsons Kristian Kirk of Santa Rosa and Vincent Kirk of San Francisco; mother Martha Van Donge of Walla Walla; sisters Connie Rogers and Carolee White of Walla, Walla; brother Bob Van Donge of Walla Walla; many cousins, and numerous friends she considered family. A celebration of Susan's life will be held at Willits United Methodist Church, at the corner of School and Pine Streets, at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7.
