What the Teacher Needs to Know about Feature A: Initial and Final Consonants (Description pp. 114-118, Word Lists pp. 201-203) This feature intensively uses pictures for sorts. The students will listen for the beginning or ending sounds when saying the word, not just look at the first letter. Word cards can be included as a reference for students who are ready to read the words. Make sure the students can name the picture cards before they are asked to sort them. It is best to avoid picture sorts where the letters look the same (m/n, b/d) and those that have similar sounds (g/j, c/s/z). These letters should be studied separately before beginning studies as a group. Tongue twisters are a fun way to approach the study of initial consonants.
