iphoto 11 To start iphoto: - Double-click Macintosh HD. Go to Applications > iphoto. Layout Library Viewing Area Search Zoom Toolbar - Library Library of imported photos & video clips, folders, albums, etc. - Viewing Area Displays photos, folders and albums depending on what is selected. - Search Allows you to search for photos. - Zoom Increases / decreases the size of photos in the Viewing Area. - Toolbar Tools to edit photos organize them and create items to purchase. Importing Photos - There are two ways to import photos into iphoto: o Import photos from a digital camera. Open iphoto. Plug in the USB cable from the camera to the computer. Turn on your camera. The camera should show up below Devices in the Library. TIP: You can set iphoto to automatically open when the camera is connected. Go to iphoto > Preferences > General. Next to Connecting camera opens choose iphoto. Give the group of photos a name that describes them where it says Add event name... Photos are organized into Events in iphoto. 1

If you would like iphoto to divide your photos up by the date they were taken, check Split Events. Photos you have already imported will show up in the Already Imported section. To import only some photos, hold down the Command key as you click each photo you want then click Import Selected button. To import all of your photos, click the Import All button. When done, drag the camera icon to the iphoto Trash, turn off the camera and disconnect the USB cable. o Import photos from somewhere on the computer: Go to File > Import to Library. Choose the folder or photo and click Import. Library - Events List of all events (birthdays, weddings, etc.) - Photos List of all photos by event. - Faces Groups of photos by people s faces. - Places Groups of photos by places they were taken. - Last 12 Months Shows all photos from last 12 months. - Last Import Shows last photos imported. - Photo Stream Shows photos shared in the Photo Stream. - Flagged Shows all flagged photos. - Trash Shows photos in the iphoto Trash. - Albums Albums of photos that you have created. - Slideshows Slideshows of photos that you have created. Preview - Hover your mouse over an event to see info to include when the pictures were taken and how many photos are in the event. - Move your mouse from left to right and back to preview the photos in the event. Sort - You can sort events and photos. Go to View > Sort. o Events can be sorted by date, title or manually. o Photos can be sorted by date, keyword, title, and rating. Info Pane - The Info Pane allows you to see information on Events and photos. To turn on the Info pane, go to View > Info (Command + I). You can also click Info in the bottom right corner. o Event Info Change the Event title, add a description, see how many Faces are tagged, add Keywords and add assign a place. o Photo Info See info on the camera, change the Photo title, rate it, add a description, assign Faces, add Keywords and assign a place. 2

Keywords - Keywords are brief labels you can add to your photos, such as birthday or sports, so you can easily find all the photos in a specific category. o Select the photos you want to add keywords to. o Go to Window > Show Keywords (Command + K) and choose the keyword you want to attach to the photo. You can select more than one keyword at a time. o To deselect a keyword, click it again. o You can also assign Keywords in the Info Pane. - iphoto comes with some basic keywords or you can create your own. o Go to Window > Show Keywords and click the Edit Keywords button. o Click the Add (+) button. o Type your new keyword and click OK. Rating Photos - You can assign photos a one- to five-star rating to indicate how much you like them. These photo ratings can also make it easier to sort photos or find them later. - To rate photos select the photo or photos you want to rate. - Go to Photos > My Rating and then choose the number of stars from the submenu. - You can also add a rating in the Info Pane. Faces - Uses face recognition software to find people s faces in photos then allows you to tag them. - Select a photo, open the Info Pane and check if there are any unnamed Faces. - If there is already one, click it and add the person s name. - If there is not a box around the face or additional faces it did not find, click Add a Face and draw a box around the face. Click unknown face and type the person s name. - TIP: Faces is tied to your Address book. - Click > next to the name. You will be taken to a screen where Faces will attempt to find that person in additional pictures. - Click Confirm Additional Faces. Click a picture to confirm that is the correct person. Click a second time to deny that is the correct person. - Note: The more a person is tagged in pictures, the better Faces gets at finding that person. Places - Shows on a map where all of your pictures were taken. - There are 2 ways to enter picture location data. 3

o Upload pictures from a camera with a GPS unit built in (like an iphone). o Click on an event or picture then open the Info Pane. o Click Assign a Place. - Map Controls o Double click Zooms in. o Click & Drag Moves the map. o Pins Click a pin to select it. Click the > to open the pictures from that location. Search - This allows you to find all of the pictures in iphoto quickly using assigned data. - Click Search in the bottom left corner. - Click the down arrow and choose what the type of search yo want; All, Date, Keyword or Rating. Type in what you are looking for. - TIP: The more data you assign to photos, the easier it will be to find them later on. Photo Albums - Go to File > New Album (Command + N). - The Event or photo you have selected will automatically be used to create a new album. - You can add photos or Events to albums by clicking and dragging them into the album on the left or by selecting a photo or Event and clicking Add To in the bottom right corner. - NOTE: You can also drag a photo to an album directly from another album, a CD or DVD, or from another location on your hard disk. When you add a photo to an album this way, iphoto automatically imports it into your photo library. - NOTE: Deleting a photo album does not delete the photos or Events within them. Smart Photo Albums - Go to File > New Smart Album (Command + Alt + N). - Give the Smart Album a name. - Choose the conditions that you want to create your photo album and click OK. - NOTE: You can add multiple conditions for creating the album. - TIP: The more data you assign to photos, the easier it will be to create Smart Albums. Slideshows - Select the photos you want to include in your slideshow. o NOTE: You can use entire albums or events. To select multiple photos in an album, hold down the Command key as you click each photo. - Go to File > New Slideshow or click Slideshow at the bottom. 4

- NOTE: Clicking Slideshow at the bottom will create a quick slideshow that will not be saved. - Give your slideshow a name. - Text Slide Add subtitles to the slide. - Theme Change the theme and effects for the slideshow. - Music Add music to the slideshow from built in tracks in iphoto or from music in itunes. - Settings Lets you tweak setting to the entire slideshow or to individual slides. - Export Allows you to export the slideshow to play on other devices. Edit - Click the Edit button in the bottom right corner. o Quick Fixes Allows you to rotate, enhance, fix red-eye, straiten, crop and retouch photos. o Effects Allows you to lighten, darken, add contrast, make the photo warmer or cooler and add effects like mattes and Sepia. o Adjust Allows you to edit individual aspects of the photo like exposure, contrast, saturation, levels and temperature. o Revert to Original Allows you to remove all added edits to a photo. o Undo Undoes the previous edit. Create - Allows you to create albums, slideshows as well as books, cards and calendars that can be printed and purchased from Apple. - Book Choose hardcover, softcover, wire-bound, a theme, a color then edit the pages and purchase it. - Cards Choose Letterpress, folded, flat and edit the card. - Calendar Choose a style, add national holidays, dates from your calendar and edit the pages. - TIP: Websites like Walgreen s and Shutterfly offer similar services and for competitive prices. 5

Trash - The Trash in iphoto is different from the system trash and must be emptied separately. - Click the Trash to see what is in it. It will say how many photos are in the trash in the top right corner. - Click Empty Trash to permanently delete the items. - NOTE: Deleting albums, slideshows and projects like books will not delete the photos used in them. - WARNING: Deleting an Event will delete all of the photos in them. Sharing Photos - Photo Stream Adds a photo to the Photo Stream. - Email Opens your email client with the photo to be sent. - Facebook Creates an album that can be shared with your Facebook account. - Flickr - Creates an album that can be shared with your Flickr account. - TIP: If have tagged Faces in photos and have the correct Facebook info for a person in your Address Book, it will tag them correctly in the shared album. - Burn Allows you to burn photos to a CD or DVD. - Set Desktop Sets the photo as your desktop. Photo Stream - Photo Stream allows you to automatically sync photos between Apple devices over Wifi. - NOTE: You must be running at least Mac OS X Lion (10.7) in order to use Photo Stream. - Go to System Preferences > icloud. o Create an icloud account if you do not already have one. o NOTE: This account is different from your itunes account. o Check Photo Stream. - On your iphone or ipad, go to Settings > Photo Stream. o Make sure Photo Stream is turned on. - Now when you take a photo on your iphone, imac or ipad, Photo Stream will make a copy of it on all of the devices as soon as they get on a Wifi connection. - iphoto automatically makes an Event for each month of Photo Stream photos. 6
